Johanna Hooker, sculptor, collector
When many people reach middle age, they begin slowing down. Johanna Hooker, however, decided to begin sculpting even as she pursued an advanced degree in social work.
Known as "Jo" to her friends, Johanna (Ayer) Cameron Hooker died Thursday at age 82. The Hyde Park resident was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley A. Hooker Jr.
Mrs. Hooker earned her bachelor's degree in psychology in 1942, and decades later attended graduate school at Ohio State University, where she received a master's degree in social work in 1973.
Although she worked as a psychotherapist helping couples, families and individuals -- first at various mental health agencies, and then in private practice -- her interest in art began occupying much of her time later in life.
"After living in California for several years, I moved back here in the 1970s to find my mother had moved everything out of the basement and had all this construction-like equipment down there," said Cynthia Robinson Sieber, Mrs. Hooker's daughter.
"I discovered she had become a sculptress and was working in stone. That was when she was in her 50s.
She didn't have too long before arthritis took over in her 60s, and she switched to collecting art."
While a sculptress, Mrs. Hooker began working with well-known local sculptor Walter Driesbach, who encouraged her to attend the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
At the academy, Mrs. Hooker also studied graphics, drawing and art history.
Once she could no longer sculpt, Mrs. Hooker frequently traveled to Paris and elsewhere in Europe, where she collected drawings and prints by the old masters.
Eventually, the collection grew in size and stature and was displayed at Miami University's art museum. In 1994, she opened her own local art gallery.
Survivors include Mrs. Sieber, of Cincinnati; sons James Douglas Cameron of Guam, and David B. Cameron of Austin, Texas ; sister Dorothy Ayer Joseph; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a son-in-law.
Services were held Friday at Knox Presbyterian Church in Hyde Park, with Elden A. Good Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of Ohio's southwest branch.
