Rev. Threatts, answered ministry call in mid-life
The Rev. Charles A. Threatts didn't sense a "calling" to preach until midlife, but when he got the call, he answered it seriously.
He enrolled at Temple Bible College and, in 1974 at the age of 41, graduated with bachelor of arts and bachelor of theology degrees.

In 1975 he became pastor of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Avondale, where he served for the next 28 years.

"He loved preaching," said Rev. Threatts' wife of 51 years, Betty Threatts. "He never compromised on his doctrine. He wanted people to get the message and get it clear."

Rev. Threatts, 71, of College Hill, who had suffered heart problems since 1999, died Jan. 3 at Mercy Fairfield Hospital.

Before becoming a pastor, he was the owner of a business, C.A. Threatts & Sons asphalt paving, which he started in 1958 with one truck and one roller.

Rev. Threatts served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He played football for a military team and was the ping-pong champion of Chicago's O'Hare Air Force Base.

In the 1960s, he was a leading layman at Zion Baptist Church.

"He enjoyed the church work and felt a calling to become a pastor," said Mrs. Threatts.

Under Rev. Threatts' leadership, numerous improvements were made to Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, including adding a new sanctuary in 1996.

Other survivors include a daughter, Deborah Threatts of New York City; three sons, Carlton, Andrew and Christopher, all of Cincinnati, and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 613 Prospect Place, in Avondale, followed by funeral services at the church at 11 a.m.

Renfro and Piper Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the C.A. Threatts Educational Pride Center.

Andrew Brady, director of band and orchestra
When Andrew J. Brady won an award from Western Hills High School, Rosemary Clooney sent him a note of congratulations. The late singer might have reminded him of when he gave her sister, Betty, a solo in one of his productions and not her.
The Clooneys were probably the most famous performers that Mr. Brady had in his 30 years of presenting Bandwagon, a yearly variety show. Others went on to perform in the original Broadway cast of West Side Story or in the movie version, said his daughter, Susan Soeberl of St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Brady, who died Saturday at age 89, also trained a generation of high school band directors during his 32 years as band and orchestra director for Western Hills. "He was very involved in his students' lives," Soeberl said. "He encouraged them to pursue careers in music."

His tenure at Western Hills began in 1945. Under his direction, the band and orchestra won many superior ratings in state competitions.

He encouraged a young Bruce Knapp, now director of bands for the College of Mount St. Joseph in Delhi Township. "I'm doing what I'm doing as a career because of him."

Mr. Brady also conducted youth band concerts summers at the Cheviot Westwood YMCA and summer concerts in Cincinnati parks.

His wife of 60 years, Frances Feltz Brady, died in 2001.

Other survivors include a daughter, Patricia Brady of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Church, 5294 Bridgetown Road, Bridgetown. Burial will follow in New St. Joseph Cemetery, Price Hill.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Rebold, Rosenacker & Sexton Funeral Home, 3700 Glenmore Ave., Cheviot. Memorials may be made to the Andrew Brady Gift Fund, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, in care of the funeral home, or to Twin Towers Nursing Home, 5343 Hamilton Ave., Cincinnati 45224.

After moving to Hamilton in 1957, he joined the legal department of Champion Papers. After ending his political career, he co-founded Chatfield and Kindness Associates, a consulting firm dealing in international relations.
