Thomas Rumpke, co-owner of trash hauler
Thomas B. Rumpke, co-owner and co-president of trash hauler Rumpke Consolidated Companies Inc., died Jan. 4 of cancer. He was 63.
"Tom was like a brother to me and will forever remain a vital part of this company," said his cousin, Bill Rumpke Sr., now sole president and CEO of Rumpke. "He was a respected leader, a great business partner and an even better friend."
Since he was old enough to collect trash, Mr. Rumpke worked for the waste and recycling business that his father, Bernard Rumpke, co-founded in 1932 with his brother, William F. Rumpke.
Tom and Bill Rumpke began their partnership with residential collection routes in 1956 and bought Rumpke Inc. from their fathers in 1978. Today, Rumpke Consolidated Companies is the nation's 11th largest waste and recycling company with more than 1,800 employees.
"Even while battling cancer, he never gave up and he always looked forward to coming back to work. -- (H)e will always live in the heart of Rumpke," said his son, Todd Rumpke.
"He loved working at Rumpke and talking with the employees, whether it was a driver, landfill operator or one of the managers. He considered everyone who worked at Rumpke a part of the Rumpke family," added another son, Mark Rumpke.
Mr. Rumpke's hobbies included playing golf, tennis and cards with his friends, working on hot rods, and spending time with his family.
A graduate of Roger Bacon High School and Xavier University, he was a member of the National Solid Waste Management Association, both the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky chambers of commerce, and served on several subcommittees for the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District. He also was a member of St. James Catholic Church in White Oak.
Besides his sons, survivors include his wife, Mary; daughter Melissa Krieger; another son, Matthew Rumpke; and 13 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Thomas B. Rumpke Memorial Fund, which will be donated to the families of two Rumpke residential drivers involved in recent accidents: Mike Dewey, injured Dec. 31, and Steven Finch, killed Jan. 3.
