Lorraine Story, charming host
An invitation to Lorraine Story's University Heights house always promised guests two things: a night of warm, charming company and a savory meal worthy of a five-star restaurant.

"She could charm you right off your feet," said Jim Story, her husband of 35 years. "And then she'd serve you the best meal you'd ever tasted."

Trained by master chefs at Le Cordon Bleu, the world-famous cooking school in Paris, Mrs. Story catered parties over the years for Frank Sinatra, Johnny Bench and other national and local celebrities.

But she enjoyed cooking even more for family and friends, for whom her meals were always a much-anticipated treat.

"Those celebrity events can be fun, but I prefer cooking in my kitchen and sitting down at my table with people I know," she said. "That's the real pleasure I get from cooking."

Mrs. Story, who had planned to cook a special Valentine's Day dinner for several family members next week, died Wednesday. She was 80.

A native Cincinnatian who grew up in Mohawk, Mrs. Story began seriously pursuing her interest in cooking after retiring from a 33-year career as an accounting executive at General Electric in Evendale.

In addition to the training that she received in Paris, Mrs. Story also attended prominent cooking schools throughout America, honing a craft that she always treated as more a beloved hobby than a career.

"I don't have to go to the Maisonette -- I have Lorraine," Mr. Story sometimes said, likening his wife's culinary talents to those found at Cincinnati's longtime five-star restaurant.

An exceptional generous person, Mrs. Story often sent some of her dishes to relatives and friends who were ill or unable for other reasons to get out of their homes. For 16 years, she cared for her mother, Laura Horstman Bradford, who lived with her daughter and son-in-law before dying at 93 in 2000. And even as her own health deteriorated in recent years, Mrs. Story always went out of her way to attend family gatherings and perform innumerable acts of kindness.

"Family's the most important thing we have in life," she often said.

Mystery novels were another of her passions, and she delighted in reading psychological thrillers until worsening eyesight forced her to turn to books on tape. She often drew a contrast between her own taste in books and her husband's affinity for more grisly tales.

"I like the ones that scare you when you read them at night, and Jimmy likes the ones with the blood and guts," she said, laughing.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Bolton & Lunsford funeral home, 3042 Harrison Avenue, Westwood, followed by a 3 p.m. memorial service at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Cincinnati Association for the Blind, 2045 Gilbert Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.
