Gustave Carl 'Bud' Guckenberger, devoted to Westwood, family
Westwood icon Gustave Carl "Bud" Guckenberger died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia. He was 88.
A lifelong Westwood resident, Mr. Guckenberger actively supported the community, serving on the board of the Westwood Civic Association and passing along its history in more than 60 "I Remember When" articles he authored, drawing on his personal experiences and recollections, for the Civic Association newsletter.
"He was just a wonderful father, the kind of guy who was always understanding. He cherished his family," his son, Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Guy Guckenberger, said today.
The elder Guckenberger attended Westwood Elementary and was graduated from Western Hills High and the University of Cincinnati. He was well known in Westwood for his role in awarding the "Yard of the Month" signs to Westwood residents through the Westwood Civic Association.
In addition to serving on the board of that association, Mr. Guckenberger was active in the community in many other ways.
Popular and well known in the neighborhood, Mr. Guckenberger's stock answer when asked how he was doing was, "I'm copasetic."
He was an usher and served on many committees at the Westwood United Methodist Church and was active in the church's Homebuilders group.
He also was a leader of the church-sponsored Cub Pack 103 and Boy Scout Troup 30, his son said.
Professionally, Mr. Guckenberger sold Sterling Silver, worked for General Electric and Shopping News, and owed a manufacturer's representative firm when he retired 25 years ago.
His grandchildren remembered the laughs he gave them -- and shocked looks given him by restaurant patrons and employees -- when he would entertain the grandchildren by barking like a dog in restaurants and other public places.
For his own children, he set aside their birthday as their "special day" where he would allow them to celebrate with an activity of their choice.
"We would go fishing or boating or hiking," Judge Guckenberger said.
Survivors also include sons, the Rev. Dale E. Guckenberger of LaPorte, Ind., and John D. Guckenberger of Voorhees, N.J.; daughter Jane. E. Dobbins of Scottsburg, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
His wife, Martha Jane Kersh Guckenberger, died in 2002.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Westwood United Methodist Church, 3460 Epworth Ave., Cincinnati.
The celebration of his life will follow at 1 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to the church and to Shriners Hospital, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati 45229-3095.
