Ellis E. Wesner
MARION -- Ellis E. Wesner, 79, was called to his heavenly home on April 1, 2003. After a long fight with cancer he died in his home in Marion, where he leaves his dear wife, Vonda.
He was the son of Oscar and Nobia (Martin) Wesner. He has two sisters, Christine (Harry, deceased), Tippin, Mae (Roy) Lee and a brother, Wayne (Betty) Wesner, all living near Salem, Ind.
After graduating from Campbellsburg High School, he farmed with his father in southern Indiana prior to serving in the infantry during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant who served his country in the Southern Pacific. He graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary, Cincinnati, in 1950. He was ordained as a minister of the gospel in 1948 and continued to serve the Lord in the ministry for 52 years.
While attending the seminary, he met Vonda Kelso and was united in marriage on May 23, 1948.
They have been blessed by a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jenifer who live in Mission Viejo, Calif., and a daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Scott Tipton, Shreve. Seven grandchildren have also been a great blessing. Many cousins, nephews and nieces have enriched his life as well as a loving church family wherever they have served.
During the first 12 1/2 years, they served the Syria Christian Church, Orleans, Ind., and the Rising Sun Church in Indiana. The remaining years they have served the Lord in Ohio -- the Southwood Church of Christ, Columbus, Round Lake Christian Assembly, Lakeville, and the Mount Vernon Avenue Church of Christ here in Marion. The local church family has been such a loving support during his illness and death.
Because Christian camping was such an influence on his life, he has always been very active in camp work. He helped to build two camps in Indiana along with others -- Wonder Valley Christian Service Camp near Salem, Ind., and Whitewater Christian Camp near Vevay, Ind. He was the first Camp Coordinator at Round Lake Christian Assembly near Lakeville and rejoiced to see the facilities and the program expand greatly during the 11 1/2 years there. A winterized lodge was built and the program was developed into a year-round camp facility. Many young people and adults have come to know the Lord there.
Ellis has served as president of Central Ohio Ministers' Association, president of Central Ohio Evangelistic Fellowship, chairman of trustees and a director at Round Lake. He was a trustee of the Worthington Christian Village and on the advisory board for Christian Seniors' Fellowship. He was also chairman of the Alumni Council at Cincinnati Bible College. He was a member of the Noon Kiwanis Club and served on the Spiritual Aims Committee. He served as a volunteer driver for the Mobile Meals program locally.
