BATISH Deepuk Bir Batish, 24, of Broadview Circle, East Liverpool, Oh., died April 1, 2001 at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill. He passed away after being hit by a car while hailing a cab for friends. He was born in White Plains, N.Y. on December 16, 1976 and was the beloved son of Dr. Dharam Bir Batish and Shashi Batish. Deepuk attended and graduated from Sewickley Academy in 1995, where he was MVP in tennis and women's field hockey. In 1999 Deepuk graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Md., where he majored in marine biology, played varsity tennis, and was certified in scuba diving. While at college, he participated in the Goucher College Fall Modern Dance Performance. Deepuk also choreographed and danced Punjab Bhangra for weddings and festivals. He enjoyed singing and helping his friends with composing lyrics. Deepuk was a lifelong New York Knicks and New York Giants fan. In the summer of 1999, he worked as a tennis instructor and counselor at Camp Mackinak near Tanglewood, Mass., working with children who had Attention Deficit Disorder. In the year 2000, Deepuk worked as a scientific observer for the National Marine Fisheries Service near Durch Harbor, Alaska, where he actually lived and worked on fishing vessels for 3 months. He was preparing to enter medical school at Ohio University or Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. During his preparation for medical school, Deepuk worked as a Research Specialist at The Ohio State University Organ Transplant Research Lab in Columbus and he had completed a Hospice Training Program to work with terminally ill patients at Riverside Hospital, also in Columbus. He was passionate about protecting all species of sharks, and studied them firsthand by diving in Honduras. He called himself a "Sharkologist". Deepuk will be most remembered for his amazing sense of humor, his ability to genuinely connect with all people, the tremendous warmth of his heart, he always made an effort to visit family and friends near and far, and always the first to volunteer to help his friends and family. Deepuk has touched everyone in such a way that he will always make them smile. He will be greatly missed by his father and mother, Dr. Dharam Bir and Shashi Batish; his maternal grandparents, G.R. and Raj Rani Rikhi of Jalpur, India; his brother, Sanjay and Sanjay's wife, Sonali and their son, Roshun of Wilmington, N.C.; his sister, Supna Batish of Washington, D.C.; his girlfriend, Jennifer "Cakes" Lin from Taiwan; several close aunts, uncles and cousins from Philadelphia, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Vancouver, London and India and his beloved dog, Zeppy. A Celebration of Deepuk's Life will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the MARTIN-MacLEAN ALTMEYER FUNERAL HOME, 15872 St. Clair Ave., Calcutta, Oh. 43920 on Wednesday, April 4, 2001 beginning at 10 a.m. All family and friends are welcomed. Friends may also visit at the funeral home in Calcutta on Tuesday April 3, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. Instead of flowers, the family wishes that memorial donations be made to the Wildlife Conservation Society. Please indicate on the check, that the donation is in memory of Deepuk Batish, for Shark Preservation. BECK Fred W. Beck, age 70, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Reynoldsburg, Oh., died Sunday April 1, 2001 at Mariner Health of Belleair. He was retired from the Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Co. in maintenance and a U.S. Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Bev Beck; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Tom Morris, Hilliard, Cindy and William Gearheart, Gahanna; 6 grandchildren, Tiffany, Ashley, Josh, William, Austin and Heath; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Lee Jones, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Jean and Dwight McGee, Lancaster. A graveside service will be held Friday 11 a.m. in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster with Pastor Roger Quay officiating. Bural will follow. Friends may call Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the FRANK E. BROWNING Homer Lee Browning, age 81, of Columbus, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at Columbus Alzheimer Care Center. Retired from Buckeye Casting. Veteran of the US Army, WWII. Survived by his wife, Mary Jo; sons, Roger and Cletis Browning; step-son, Robert Boilon; sister, Vernie Mitchell of Charleston, WVa.; and brother, Donald Browning of Gilbert, WVa. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001 at RUTHERFORD-SHROYER FUNERAL HOME, 1278 West Broad St., Columbus, (614)274-1161. Rev. G.A. Haubrich officiating. DIXON Robert E. Dixon, 79, of Columbus, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Born August 26, 1921 in Wellston, Oh. He was a retired Manager for Rockwell after 30 years of service and a Navy Veteran of WW II. A member of the American Legion Post #371. Rob was extremely active in the community with youth activities, an avid card player, golfer and artist. He is preceded in death by his parents Erve Dixon and Tessie (Copas) Fry, brother Roger Dixon, sisters Regina Fry, Helen Burroughs, Phyllis Dixon, aunt Garnet Kerr, uncle Leslie Copas, sister-in-law Glenna Dixon. He is survived by loving wife of 48 years, Alice (Midlick); daughter, Kellie J. (Vincent B.) Donohoe; son, Kerry J. (Lana S.) Dixon, both of Marengo; grandchildren, Amber L. Dixon and Galie M. Donohoe; brother, Roy "Porky" Dixon of Arkansas; many friends, nieces, nephews; special friends and neighbors, James and Lucy Pack. DODGE Lorraine Gillman Dodge, of Grove City, passed away Monday, April 2, 2001 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. Member of Grove City United Methodist Church. Lorraine came to Columbus in 1941 where she met her husband, Benjamin T. Dodge. June of 2001 would have marked 55 years of marriage. She is survived by husband, Ben; daughters, Brenda (Tim) Smith and Connie (Mike) Parrett; grandchildren, Jennie (Clay) Smith McCord, Mindy (Chris) Smith Sowers, Brandy Smith Grove, Christopher (friend Kellye Haines) and Angela Parrett; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and  Jackson McCord and Bailey Shane Smith Grove; sisters, Merle, Bessie, Easter, Reba, Nell, Gaye, Jean and Callie; brothers, Earl, Roger, and Stanley; sister-in-law, Delphine Darnell. Visitation Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 2697 Columbus St., Grove City. Funeral will be Thursday 10 a.m. at the Grove City United Methodist Church, 2684 Columbus St. Dr. Carl Wiley officiating. Interment Concord Cemetery. During Lorraine's illness she received and enjoyed many flowers sent by family and friends, and so at this time, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Grove City United Methodist Church or Mt. DRESSLER Ernest Nathaniel Dressler, age 90, died April 1, 2001 at Doctor's Hospital West after a long illness. He was retired from Kentucky Central Insurance Company. Member Westgate United Methodist Church, volunteer with Meals on Wheels of the Ohio Food Pantry for 30 years, member of Hinton, West Virginia Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Columbus, Aladdin Temple Columbus. Preceded in death by parents. Survived by loving wife of 67 years, Sally Maye; son, Gary (Nancy) Dressler of Naples, Fla.; grandson, Charles; granddaughter, Tina (Mike) Hayes; great-grandson, J. Ryan Hayes; great-great-granddaughter, Tiffany Janea; sisters, Barbara (Dick) Withrow, Kathleen Loftus and Daisy Fink; numerous friends and relatives. DUGAN Janice Prior Dugan, age 61, unexpectedly went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2001, joining her recently deceased husband of nearly 40 years Charles F. Dugan II and her father Henry C. Prior. She is survived by their loving daughters, Heather (Rich) Hartzell, Stephanie (Lee) Marxen, Suzanne (Richard) Van Schaik and Kathleen (Greg) Hadder and will be dearly missed by her 9 loving grandchildren: Zachary, Hannah, and Matthew Hartzell; Brittany and Charles Marxen; Michael, Christian and Baby Van Schaik; and Noelle Hadder. She also leaves behind her mother, Wanda Prior; sister, Monda Sue Prior; brother, Greg Prior; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Mary Dugan; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Dodie Dugan; nieces, Holly LeBart and Laura Meehan; and nephew, Spencer Laemmle. All who knew her were struck by her profound faith in God, most recently evidenced by her continued love and trust in Him during her husband's battle with cancer. Her chosen calling, after a short teaching career, was raising her four daughters and developing a strong family. Her greatest delights were sharing her faith, serving others, and enjoying her many grandchildren. Her keen artistic sense was expressed in her watercolors, flower arranging, and decorating. She also enjoyed travel, monthly gatherings with her Partners in Gourmet (P.I.G.), numerous Bible studies and AGLOW. Janice graduated from Van Wert High School in 1957, the same year she served as Queen Jubilee XIII in the Van Wert Peony Festival. She met her husband, Chuck, at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) where she obtained her teaching degree in 1961. She was a member of the Vineyard Church of Columbus, 6000 Cooper Rd., Westerville, where a Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001.
