CONRAD Charles P. Conrad, well known Central Ohio commercial and residential land developer, died on Friday, April 13, 2001 at his home. He was 82. As a graduate of Tennessee military Institute, Chuck Conrad was commissioned as an officer in the military during WW II. He was a Captain in the United States Air Force and served from January 4, 1942 to May 13, 1946. When the war was over, he and Jack Schmidt went into business together as the Conrad- Schmidt Motor Car Company. In the early 1950's, the Ohio Fair Trade Laws prohibited the sale of merchandise at prices lower than those set by the manufacturer. To get around this and be competitive, retailers were forced to resort to loopholes such as catalogue sales that were available only to a few or they sold memberships in so-called Discount Clubs. Conrad opened Country Fair Discount Center, challenging these Fair Trade Laws. Finally, after lengthy, costly court battles, he won, thereby breaking the system down and opening the discount market to the general public on a grand scale. In the fall of 1957, Conrad closed the discount business and, as the Columbus Automobile Dealer for Rambler, Metro and Fiat, became known for innovative marketing. He was one of the first to offer a free Florida vacation with the purchase of a new car. In order to attract new business, Conrad frequently lent a car for a period of up to six months to prospective buyers who were new to Columbus. These newcomers invariably became customers. The dealership also maintained three used car lots. In 1975, Chuck Conrad acquired Valley Hi, a ski area in Logan County, northwest of Columbus. He renamed the property Mad River Mountain, taking the name from the Mad River, a free flowing trout stream at the headwaters of the Scioto River. Conrad enlarged and improved the ski area by adding several new lifts, upgrading the base complex, and modernizing the snowmaking equipment. He acquired a motel adjacent to the property. Later, he developed Mad River into a year-round resort, adding tennis courts, a swimming pool, lighted softball parks with bleachers, and an RV park. The ski slope provided a perfect summer amphitheatre seating hundreds of spectators at summer concerts by country singers. Conrad sold the property in 1990 and went on to develop commercial office parks in Grove City and Columbus as well as residential housing in Logan County and Worthington. Chuck Conrad was a member of Scioto Country Club, Muirfield Village Golf Club and the Memorial Club. He is survived by his wife, Terrie, and their sons, Charles and Christopher; former wife, Leda Brady, of Phoenix, Arizona and their daughter Stephanie, of Zanesfield, Ohio; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001 in the Northwest Chapel of Grace Brethren Church, 6700 Rings Road, Dublin, Ohio. Pastor Terry Hofecker officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. The family is profoundly grateful for the care given by Hospice. This organization is funded largely by private donations; therefore, in lieu of flowers, we suggest a contribution to Hospice at Riverside/Grant, 3535 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus, OH 43214.
