HART LeVoy H. Hart, 89, died Sunday, April 22, 2001. He was born in Kenton, Ohio and was one of eleven children. He was retired from the U.S. Post Office. He is survived by brother, John "Jack" (Dorothy) Hart; sister, Mary Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Road, where the funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, with cremation to follow. LESLEIN Dorothy June Leslein, 75, of West  Jefferson passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001 in Arbors West. She was born June 17, 1925 in Columbus to George Leslein of Dublin and the late Edna Leona (Griffin) Leslein. She is survived by her step mother, Mable Leslein of Dublin; a sister, Betty Garver of West  Jefferson; a brother, George E. (Linda) Leslein of Whitehall; a niece and four nephews. Graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001 in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Columbus. RADER-McDONALD FUNERAL HOME, West  Jefferson in charge of arrangements.

MANN Herbert Partee Mann, age 93, Friday, April 20, 2001. Born May 12, 1907. Lifelong resident of Columbus, Ohio; born and raised in Hilltop and 52-year resident of Clintonville. Preceded in death by wife Gladys Lynn Mann; son Roger Lynn Mann; and parents William and Blanche (Partee) Mann. Survived by daughter-in-law, Nancy (Mann) Houser and husband, Lyle; and grandchildren, Marcia (Mann) Rector and husband, Raymond; Roger Mann and wife, Debra; and Sara (Mann) Copenhaver and husband, Chip; ten great-grandchildren also survive: in birth order: Ashley, Dorco-Copenhaver, Cole Dorco-Copenhaver, Rebecca Mann, Landon Mann, Jennifer Mann, Ryan Rector, Tyler Copenhaver, Megan Rector, Boyd Copenhaver, Zachary Mann. Retired from Timken Roller Bearing Co. in Columbus, Ohio. Herb was an avid rose gardener and received many awards from the Ohio Rose shows including numerous recognition certificates for his time and contributions to the Rose Society. A member of the American Rose Society for over 50 years and honored as a Consulting Rosarian Emeritus. A member of the Columbus Rose Club since the 1940's, he served as President in 1962 and was awarded their Bronze Medal for outstanding service. A charter member of the Central Ohio Rose Society when it formed in 1950, served as President in 1960 and honored with a Life Membership. Survivor of the 1913 flood and participated in recent years in the Survivors of the 1913 Flood group. Active member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church since 1943. Family will receive friends Monday 2-3 and 7-9 p.m. at WEIR-AREND FUNERAL HOME, 4221 N. High St. (3 blocks south of Henderson Rd.). Service will be held Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 West Henderson Rd. Interment Sunset Cemetery. Dr. Joel S. Baer officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maple Grove United Methodist Church or to Whetstone Convalescent/Riverside Hospice.

MASSA Paul L. Massa, February 7, 1922 - April 21, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul L. Massa, 79, of Newark, Ohio will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, with the Reverend William Hritsko officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. Mr. Massa died peacefully at home on April 21, 2001 after a valiant battle with cancer. Throughout his illness, he was lovingly cared for by his wife and children. He was born in Mansfield, Ohio on February 7, 1922 to the late John Albert and Genevieve (Smith) Massa. Paul attended St. Peters High School in Mansfield and St. Charles Prep School in Rensselaer, Indiana, received a B.S. in Business Administration from Franklin University, a M.A. in Public Administration from Central Michigan University and a M.A. in journalism from Ohio State University. Paul enlisted in the Army on January 17, 1942 at Fort Hayes, Columbus; was commissioned a 2nd Lt. at Fort Sill  Oklahoma in August 1942. He graduated from Infantry and Artillery School in succession. He landed on Utah Beach on D. Day with the 4th Infantry Division and served as a forward artillery observer until the fall of Cherbourg. He was then assigned to the Pacific Theater and was wounded twice in the Luzon Campaign. He was promoted to Captain on January 15, 1945 at the age of 22. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge for his military service. After his second battle wound he was sent to Nichols General Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky for treatment. There he met a young Army nurse, the love of his life, Elizabeth Gladys Downs, who he married on October 10, 1945 after a brief courtship. Together they reared six children with love, devotion and faith. Paul was a columnist for The Columbus Dispatch writing "Tell it to Doc" for many years, authored many Sunday Magazine articles and stories, did book reviews and general reporting. He was a writer for the Newark Advocate, most recently assisting with the publication of "Licking County Historical Review" and "Licking County in World War Two". Paul served as Chief of Communications for the Ohio Department of Health, and administrative assistant to the Director of the Department of Health in the 1970's; the administrator of the Newark Healthcare Center and retired as a realtor for Anderson-Layman Company in 1997. He was an active member of the Newark Auxiliary Police Department, a member of St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, member and past president of the Newark-Heath Rotary, Retired Officers Club of Central Ohio, the Ohio military Reserve Officers Association, a member of the V.F.W. Post #1060, the American Legion Post #85, and the D.A.V., Ohio Commodores, Columbus Civitan, Press Club of Ohio and the Licking County Democratic Club. Paul is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys (Downs) Massa of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Vince and Cindy Massa of Granville, Ohio, Jim and Sue Massa of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Steve and Marion Massa of Heath, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Andy Anderson of Grand Junction, Colorado, Maureen and Jeff Blackburn of Westerville, Ohio and Theresa and Rick Marshall of Durango, Colorado; fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Paul Massa was an exceptional man of great integrity, who was highly respected and deeply loved by his family and friends. He was truly a gentleman and devoted family man. He took the time to nurture relationships with every family member from his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He cherished them all and will be greatly missed but will live forever in their hearts and memories. Friends and family may call from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, Ohio. The family requests memorials to Hospice of Central Ohio, for their excellent care for which they are profoundly grateful.

MAXWELL Sharon Maxwell, age 64, of Columbus, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Retired teacher from the Knox County area Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband Smiley William Maxwell of Cardington, Ohio. Sharon is survived by daughter, Jody (Tim) Scarbrough of Columbus; mother, Zelma Haas of Columbus; brother, Greg (Anita) Haas of Columbus; grandchildren, Kelslan Lee Scarbrough and William Maxwell; nephew Andrew M. Haas. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Monday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at 1 p.m. Inurnment in Glendale Cemetery, Cardington, OH., at a later date. MELLMAN Ruth Volk Mellman passed away on the 29th of Nissan, April 22, 2001 at Wexner Heritage House. Preceded in death by her parents Abraham and Esther Volk; and by her husband of 70 years Robert L. Mellman. Mrs. Mellman is survived by her children, Edwin (Faye) Mellman, Adelaide (Marvin) Mentser, and Myra (Nathaniel) Goldman, of Columbus; as well as six grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Minnie Schwartz of Columbus, and Clara Weinblatt of Toledo. During World War Two, Mrs. Mellman was a volunteer in the ladies auxiliary of the American Red Cross. From the 70's through the 1990's, she was a volunteer with the Jewish Family Service, assisting the new Americans who arrived from the former Soviet Union. For her tireless efforts with the new immigrants, Mrs. Mellman was awarded the  Jefferson Award in 1980, by Mayor Moody, and was also given an award by the Jewish Family Service in 1981 for help above and beyond the call of duty to the New American immigrants. She was also the author of an unpublished novel, entitled "Dreams Ahead". Graveside service will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the New Agudas Achim Cemetery, Rabbi Steven Abrams and Cantor Baruch Shifman officiating. Shiva will be observed at the residence of Mr. Edwin Mellman. Donations in Mrs. Mellman's memory should be made to the Garry Ira Mentser Memorial Fund, c/o Congregation Tifereth Israel, 1354 E. Broad St., Columbus, or the Charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL.

MULLINS Ora Gene Mullins, age 67, of Columbus suddenly Friday, April 20, 2001 Columbus Community Hospital. Loving husband, father and grandfather. Retired baker Omar Bakery and retired Shonac Corporation. Survived by wife of 47 years, Shirley; daughters, Debra (Earl) Beem, Columbus, Judith (Leigh) Dyer, Millersport; son, Michael Mullins at home; six grandchildren; mother, Gladys Mullins; sister, Betty (Lloyd) Spillman; brother, Donald (Imogene) Mullins all of Kentucky; a host of other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by father Wayne Mullins, daughter Barbara and sister Nadine Fleming. NICHOLL Mary B. Nicholl of Dublin, passed on April 20, 2001. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a graduate of Bluffton College and a longtime member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Upper Arlington. She was preceded in death by her husband George V. Nicholl in 1999 and her father George Mather. She is survived by her daughters, Krista (Scott) Graham and Tammy (Bruce) Stephanic; granddaughters, Lauren and AnnMarie Stephanic; mother, Helen Mather; sister, Margaret Mather; brothers, George (Ruth) and David Mather. A funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. Interment Union Cemetery. ROGERS James Rogers, age 72, Friday, April 20, 2001 at St. Ann's Hospital. A member of Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith. Veteran of the U.S. Army. Jimmy set the first continuous drum record and was nationally known. He played drums with Nat King Cole orchestra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and many other local and nationally known musicians. SCANLAN Elizabeth A. Scanlan, age 96, of Grove City, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001 at Monterey Care Center. She was a member of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles (1963). Survived by her daughter, Evelyn (William) Wemlinger; grandchildren, Charles Wemlinger, Rick Wemlinger, Timothy Wemlinger and Trina Maynard; sister, Peg Gheen, Az.; 8 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at Out Mother of Sorrows Chapel at St. Joseph Cemetery. Fr. John Swickard, Celebrant.
