HILL Brigadier Arthur B. Hill, Sr. (87) was "Promoted to Glory" from Westerville, Ohio on April 27, 2001 and is enjoying the presence of our Lord and King Jesus Christ. Art was proud to be a native "Buckeye", having been born in Middletown, Ohio on July 9, 1913. Feeling God's call to ministry, he refused a full scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and attended The Salvation Army's School for Officers' Training, from which he was ordained as a minister in 1934. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris Jean (Fowle) and four children (Betty Ammons of St. Johns, Mich.; Major Doris Dake of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Arthur B. Hill, Jr. of Cleveland Heights, Oh. Beatrice Holz of Wilmore, KY), 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren as well as sister-in-law Beatrice Fowle and family friend Carol V. Sparks, who both reside in their home. Brigadier Hill served as The Salvation Army's Area Commander for Franklin and Delaware Counties from 1970-1976. Additional appointments in Ohio included Dayton, Chillicothe, Portsmouth and Toledo. He also served The Salvation Army as Westmoreland County Coordinator, stationed in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, as well as Assistant Eastern Territorial Secretary for Community Relations and Development in New York City. Art Hill was active in community affairs, including ministerial associations, Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, Jaycees and United Ways. An active Rotarian since March 1938, with unbroken perfect attendance from 1948-2001, Art Hill was recently honored as a Life Member in the Downtown Columbus Rotary Club. Community leadership during his years of active Salvation Army officership included service as President of the Portsmouth Jaycees. President of the Toledo Hi-12 Club and President of the New Kensington Rotary Club. Returning to Columbus in retirement in 1978, he continued active community leadership by serving on the Rotary Club Board of Directors, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, various advisory councils, and coordinating a multimillion dollar capital project for the reconstruction and refurbishing of The Salvation Army's Greenwood Lake Camp in Delaware, Ohio. In collaboration with former Rotary International Trustee T.D. Griley, Art authored the presentation which resulted in the International Salvation Army receiving Rotary's Award for World Understanding. Recognitions included the Columbus Dispatch Community Service Award (1987); the Columbus Rotary "Man-of-the-Year" (1988), distinction as a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow; presentation of the Columbus Salvation Army's Annual "God and Country" Award (1991), and the Certificate in Recognition of Exceptional Service awarded by The Salvation Army's International Headquarters (London, England). In recognition of exceptional community endeavors to the city of Portsmouth, including serving as mediator for nine labor strikes, the Mayor of Portsmouth proclaimed an "Arthur B. Hill Day" in 1994. His name and signature are included on Portsmouth's famous "Wall of Stars". Art's interest in music began as a teenager playing sousaphone and continued throughout his life. In 1986 he co-founded Columbus's Annual "God and Country" Concert featuring the Brass Band of Columbus and a representative Salvation Army Band. Recognizing his continued service as Concert Arrangements Coordinator through the most recent concert on March 31, 2001, a scholarship has been established with two awards to be presented annually to young musicians. In lieu of floral tributes, the family has requested that donations be forwarded to: The Arthur B. Hill Music Scholarship "God and Country" Committee Treasurer c/o The Salvation Army P.O. Box 15755 Columbus, Oh. 43215. Art Hill lived a life that exemplified the following: I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show any human being, let me do it now. But let me not defer or neglect it; for I shall not pass this way again. (Stephen Grellet). Viewing will be held at the SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 229 East State Street, Columbus on Monday evening, April 30, 2001 from 5-8 p.m. At service to celebrate the life of Art Hill will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning, May 1, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. with graveside services immediately following at Kingwood Memorial Park, 8230 Columbus Pike (US Route 23).
