Walter Farmer, recovered art

Architect and art connoisseur Walter I. Farmer, 86, of Hyde Park, died Saturday.

Last year, Mr. Farmer received Germany's highest civilian honor, the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit, for his role in the return of 202 treasured paintings (including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Botticelli) that had been seized by Allied Forces during World War II.

Since reunification in 1990, Germany has sought the return of 200,000 German museum pieces that were said to have been stolen by Soviet troops during the war. German researchers trying to track paintings learned about Farmer's protest of the shipments.

A captain in the U.S. Army Engineering Corps in November 1945, he mounted a protest of Allied officers against the pillaging of German artworks that later became known as the Wiesbaden Manifesto.

A Miami University graduate, Mr. Farmer is also the co-founder of his alma mater's art museum, donating its core collection, said his daughter, Margaret Planton of Chillicothe, Ohio. He has also been a donor to the Cincinnati Art Museum, she said.

''He had just a tremendous sense of the enjoyment of life. It showed itself in his design work and then his (art) collecting and then sharing these collections,'' said Mrs. Planton. ''He was actually working a week ago . . . We were still writing his memoirs, and I'm going to finish that.''

Publication of his memoirs, ''The Safekeepers,'' is expected by the end of 1998, she said.

Mr. Farmer worked part of his architecture career at A.B. Closson before going to work for Greenwich House in 1950, which he bought five years later, said Mrs. Planton.

Services will be private. Memorials may be made to the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Miami University Art Museum.
