Dimple Sheriff ran land bank
Dimple Musselman Sheriff, 98, who operated the Federal Land Bank in Williamstown, Ky., and taught in Mason County Schools, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown.

Ms. Sheriff, of Williamstown, also was a member of Williamstown Christian Church. Her husband, Carl Sheriff, died in 1964.

Survivors include cousins.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation: noon Saturday. Burial: Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials: Williamstown Christian Church, N. Main St., Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

PHILLIP "RICHARD" OHMER, 73, of Stout, Ohio, near Portsmouth, died Wednesday. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. There will be no services. Roger Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth is in charge of arrangements. Survivors: sons, Jerry Ohmer and Phillip Richard Ohmer Jr., both of California, Ky.; daughters, Deborah Petrie of Stout, Ohio, and Mary Ohmer of Dayton, Ky.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters and a brother.

Sister of Charity Pauline Apodaca

Sister Pauline Apodaca of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati was a nurse with a lifelong interest in the plight of migrant farm workers.

Sister Pauline died Friday at the Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township. She was 73.

Sister Pauline was a Sister of Charity for 54 years, a nurse for more than 35 years and an advocate for migrant workers for much of her religious life.

"I don't think I have ever met a more loving, kind, sensitive, caring person in my life. Her generosity was outstanding in all ways," said her lifelong friend, Sister Martha Jean Gallagher.

Sister Pauline received her nursing degree from Seton School of Nursing in Colorado Springs, Colo., and took her state boards for nursing in Colorado.

Sister Pauline became in terested in migrant farm workers while teaching at the nursing school at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1960s. While interpreting for a Spanish-speaking patient in the hospital, she learned of the poor conditions in camps where workers lived.

She and Sister Martha Jean visited the camps and began assisting the workers in Darke County, Ohio, in 1969. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati commissioned Sister Pauline to survey the workers and determine their needs. Sister Pauline recommended that the Catholic Church intensify its involvement in the religious welfare of migrant families.

Sister Pauline and Sister Martha Jean then moved to California to work with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers of America. She worked in clinics there from 1974-79.

Sister Pauline moved back to Cincinnati in 1979 to work in the health clinic in the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse. She later became coordinator of social services at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home. She retired at the Motherhouse in 1995.

Survivors include two sisters, Dora Barnes of Riverside, Calif., and Anita Jacquez of Denver, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2-3 p.m. Monday at the Heritage Room of the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse, 5900 Delhi Road, Delhi Township. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 3 p.m. Monday in the auditorium/chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in Sister Pauline Apodaca's name to the Sisters of Charity Retirement Fund, 5900 Delhi Road, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio 45051.

Mrs. Ruth Rosen, taught deaf students

Retired teacher Ruth Rosen, 82, of Cincinnati died Friday at University Hospital.

Mrs. Rosen held a master's degree in special education from the University of Cincinnati. She taught deaf students at three Cincinnati public schools during her second career as a teacher, from 1968 to 1983.

She previously taught school early in her marriage to Louis Rosen, who died in 1989. Mrs. Rosen also was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Richard M. Rosen.

She is survived by two sons, Matthew Rosen of Wyoming and Jeffrey Rosen of Silver Spring, Md., and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Rosen was an avid bridge player, and a member of Wise Temple and Losantiville Country Club.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Weil Funeral Home, 3901 Reading Road, North Avondale. Burial is at United Jewish Cemetery on Montgomery Road.

FRANCIS H. BARTLING, 87, of Morris, Ind., died Thursday. Mr. Bartling was retired from the poultry business; owned Bartling Bait Shop in Morris, and was a former salesman and district manager for Grower's Chemical Corp. in Milan, Ohio. Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. EST Monday at St. Anthony Church, Morris. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. EST Sunday at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville. Memorials: St. Anthony Church or charity of donor's choice.

WILLIAM THOMPSON, 73, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Graveside services: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vine Street Cemetery, Cincinnati. Visitation: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jamison and Jamison Funeral Home, 3437 Montgomery Road.

Thomas Shear loved work, politics

Thomas D. Shear, 52, of East Walnut Hills, president of United Title Agency, died Sunday after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Shear, a real estate attorney, was a founder of United Title Agency, which made real estate title searches, in the early 1980s. He recently retired as president of the firm because of health problems.

He was a 1966 graduate of Withrow High School, a 1970 graduate of Miami University and a graduate of Chase Law School. In addition to his real estate law work, he closely followed the stock market and was an investor.

Mr. Shear worked in local Republican politics, campaigning and raising money for numerous candidates.

He campaigned recently for Hamilton County Recorder Rebecca Groppe.

"He was philanthropic, donating to the zoo and various organizations he felt strongly about," said Mr. Shear's brother, Douglas K. Shear.

Mr. Shear was an avid gardener, sports fan and world traveler.

His favorite spots included London, Germany, Greece and Seattle.

"He cared about people and people cared about him," said Douglas Shear.

"He was a very loyal individual and very much concerned about his family and also concerned about the quality of life."

Other survivors include Mr. Shear's mother, Betty Jean Shear of Cincinnati; a brother, Patrick C. Shear of Cincinnati; two sisters-in-law and three nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, followed by funeral services at the church.

Memorials may be made to the church.

The Elden A. Good Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Clark, lawyer, WWII vet

Raymond Hugh Clark was known as many things - long-time Cincinnati probation officer and lawyer, World War II veteran, police academy instructor, life-long member of AMVETS and WB8BUF.

The last designation - WB8BUF - identified Mr. Clark throughout the world. It was the amateur radio operator call sign he used as a former officer of the Greater Cincinnati Amateur Radio Association and a member of the Gray History of Wireless Museum board of directors.

Mr. Clark, of Finneytown, died Wednesday at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. He was 73.

A graduate of Western Hills High, Mr. Clark served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and helped found AMVETS after his discharge.

His graduation from the University of Cincinnati was followed by his 1953 graduation from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law.

He became the youngest U.S. marshal field deputy in 1950 at the age of 22 and served there until 1952 when he was appointed a U.S. probation officer.

In 1955, he was named U.S. probation officer in charge of the Cincinnati office before being named chief U.S. probation officer for the Southern District of Ohio.

He also served as a member of the Cincinnati Bar Association and chairman of its Law Day and Criminal Law committees.

He also served as secretary, vice-president and president of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

He taught at the Cincinnati Police Academy, the Hamilton County Police Academy and at Chase.

He also was a member of the Scottish Rite and Syrian Temple Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Schoenling Clark; daughter, Karen John of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and son, Raymond S. Clark of Naples, Fla.

Funeral services were private for the family. Memorials may be made to City Gospel Mission, 1419 Elm St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45210 or Northminster Presbyterian Church, 703 Compton Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231.
