'Peggy' Macneale, daffodil expert, judge

Margaret Pogue Macneale, gardener, birdwatcher, authority on daffodils and the first director of the Civic Garden Center of Cincinnati, died Saturday at Christ Hospital.

She was 86.

A native of Cincinnati, Mrs. Macneale was introduced to gardening and daffodils by her father, Thomas Lightfoot Pogue, on their hillside yard on McMillan Street.

In 1999, England's Royal Horticultural Society registered a new variety of daffodil, ''Peggy's Gift,'' in her honor.

She served as a flower show judge for more than 30 years, and in 1998, the American Daffodil Society awarded the long-time Wyoming resident its Silver Medal for services to the group. She was a founding member of the Southwestern Ohio Daffodil Society.

''Peggy was relentless. If she detected a spark of interest in daffodils, she wove you into her life,'' said friend Linda Walpe. ''No one was safe. There was no escaping her boundless enthusiasm.''

Mrs. Macneale was also an enthusiastic birdwatcher and volunteer, devoting much time to the Garden Center's Flora Therapy program at the Glenview Home for Boys and introducing the joy of gardening and the natural world to children at the Maple Knoll Child Center.

Kathleen Duval, director of the Child Center, said Mrs. Macneale ''related with each child and each plant so respectfully to help each of them grow up naturally.''

A 50-year resident of Wyoming, Mrs. Macneale was active in the Junior League, Girl Scouts and sang for many years in the Wyoming Presbyterian Church choir.

In 1942, Mrs. Macneale became the first director of the new Civic Garden Center of Cincinnati, and this spring, the center established The Peggy Macneale Daffodil Garden to honor her life and her contributions to Cincinnati. Dedication is set for 3:30 p.m. May 12.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Macneale Cohen of Minneapolis and Ellie Elkinton of Philadelphia; two sons, Neil Macneale III of Menlo Park, Calif., and Donald P. Macneale of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Macneale Jr.

In addition to the garden dedication, a memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. May 12 at the Wyoming Presbyterian Church, 225 Wyoming Ave. Visitation is from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Civic Garden Center, 2715 Reading Road, Cincinnati 45206; the Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, 6375 Riverside Drive, Dublin 43017; or to the charity of choice.
