Daniel Rohman, always inspired those around him
Whether coaching his children's sports teams, guiding his employees through rocky times or fighting the cancer that eventually took his life, Daniel J. Rohman inspired those around him.

The last chapter in his life was a three-year battle with bile duct cancer.

Mr. Rohman, 59, died Friday at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. He had outlived doctors' initial prognosis by five times after conducting his own research on experimental treatment.

"I think Dan was really a wonderful inspiration to other people fighting cancer," said his wife, Sandy, of Kenwood. "Many times people who didn't even know him would call and ask him to come speak to a new cancer patient. He just really seemed to have a gift for encouraging them on how to fight, and not to give up and to look for alternatives."

Mr. Rohman was born in Wyoming, Ohio. After graduating from Roger Bacon High School and the University of Cincinnati, he served in the Army in Italy during the Vietnam War.

He launched a career in marketing that eventually led him to Sevierville, Tenn., where he worked at Pigeon Forge's Silver Dollar City, which soon became Dollywood. He retired as vice president of marketing at Dollywood after 17 years.

"He had a real gift at making people feel comfortable, and I think that's how it was with Dolly (Parton). He made her feel comfortable, and he was just a great organizer and got everything done so well," said Mrs. Rohman.

Mr. Rohman used his relationship to other marketers at large companies to find discounted food prices for the Sevier County Food Ministries, where he also played Santa Claus for many Christmases. He also spent 20 years as a baseball, basketball and soccer coach for all four of his children.

Besides his wife, other survivors include sons Grant Rohman of Johnson City, Tenn.; Lance Rohman of Snellville, Ga., Clayton Rohman of Dayton; daughter, Carrie Rohman of Cincinnati; father, Howard Rohman of Deer Park; brothers, Joe Rohman of Cincinnati, Jim Rohman of Grove City, Fred Rohman of Loveland, Jeff Rohman of Olympia, Wash., Don Rohman of Covington, Dave Rohman of Cincinnati; and sisters Donna Rohman of Oldenburg, Ind., and Diane Gregory of Germantown, Tenn.

Mass of Christian burial is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent Ferrer, 7754 Montgomery Road, Kenwood. Visitation is from 5 to 8 tonight at Thomas-Justin Memorial, 7500 Montgomery Road. Memorials may be made to Sevier County Food Ministries, P.O. Box 6042 Sevierville, Tenn. 37864.
