Cortez

Services for Andres (Andy) Cortez, 18, Tipton were held July 10, 2000, at the Tipton First Baptist Church with Brother Roy Jaye officiating and the Rev. Pedro Garza assisting. Burial was at the Tipton Cemetery with Tipton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Cortez died July 4,2000, from injuries suffered in a car accident in Canon City, Colo.

He was born September 25, 1981, in Crookston, Minn., the son of Mario Cortez, Sr. and Maria Irene Garza. He was a junior at Tipton High School and was in electronics at Frederick Vo-Tech.

Survivors include his father of Donna, Texas; his mother of Tipton; two brothers, Mario Cortez, Jr., Tipton; and Damien Rogers of Davidson; two sisters, Cristina Cortez and Victoria Bautista, both of Tipton; his grandparents: Jesus and Margarita Garcia Garciasville, Texas.; Daniel and Eva Flores, Tipton; Maria Reyes, Donna Texas. and great grandparents, Victoria Rodriguez of Altus and Efrain and Marcela Garcia of Garciasville; two aunts and uncle Diana, Melissa and Jessie Garcia Jr. of all Tipton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice or to the First National Bank of Altus or Tipton to the tragedy account of Andres Cortez to help the family pay the funeral expenses to Gish Funeral Home in Frederick. Any remaining proceeds will be put into a survivors account for his sister Victoria, who survived the accident.

Dabbs

Arnold Maurice Dabbs, 84, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Patterson-Greer Chapel with Dr. Clem Dozer officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Patterson-Greer Funeral Home.

Dabbs was born May 11, 1916, in Arlie, Texas, to R.C. and Virgie Conrad Dabbs. He was raised in Hollis and later moved to Dallas, where he was employed by Cargill's Grain Elevator for a number of years before retiring in 1976.

He moved back to Hollis in 1980 to be near his sister, Mildred Edmonson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leroy Dabbs; two sisters, Vera Duvall and Odessa Dabbs and an infant son, Charles Ray Dabbs.

Survivors include: three sisters, Mildred Edmonson and her husband Earl of Hollis, Connie McKee and husband Eddie of Vernon, Texas and Ruby Burch of Amarillo, Texas and several nieces and nephews.

Dawson

Sherril Ford Dawson, 38, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Services were held today at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Altus with the Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

She was born Sept. 30, 1961 in Altus to Ray and Bonetta (Brady) Ford. She attended Altus Schools and graduated from Altus High School in 1979. She also obtained a paralegal degree. She was a flight attendant with Southwest Airlines for five years and recently was the secretary for the Altus Farm Bureau.

She was a member of the Harvest Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas and attended the First Baptist Church of Altus. Her hobbies included spending time with her boys, reading, riding horses, and dancing. She was also an organ donor.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Ford and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Milligan and Mr and Mrs. Ed Ford.

Survivors include her fiance, Ted Griffith of Hollis; her parents Mr. and Mrs. Manford Steensgard, Altus; three sons, Brian Mark Hopkins and Brayden John Hopkins, Coppell, Texas and Caleb Lee Dawson, Altus; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and John Bates, Altus, Carolyn Anderson, Altus, Lori Anderson, Altus, Brenda and Larry Andrew, San Antonio, Texas and Ranae and Doug Winters, Lawton; several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Fikes

Duard R. Fikes, 81, died Friday, June 30, 2000 at the English Village Nursing Home. Memorial services are pending under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Fikes was born December 4, 1918 in Hollis. He married Rita Mozelle Smith on May 29, 1940, in Gould. He was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Fikes was a manager of various supermarkets. He worked for over 20 years as a sales representative for Morrell Meat Packaging Company. He loved being with his family, gardening and remodeling.

He is preceded in death by both parents; a son: Donald Ross Fikes; and a sister: Helen Schumacher.

He is survived by his wife: Rita Fikes of the home; son: Carl L. Fikes and wife Ruth of Huntington Beach, CA; two sisters: Pauline Brooks of Hobbs, NM and Dorothy Spangler and husband Bob of Silver City, NM; cousin: Joe Carlton of Altus; a grandson: Edward Fikes of Anaheim, CA; a granddaughter: Amy Colon' of Costa Mesa, CA; and numerous other family members and friends.

Haas

Funeral services for Joseph Dean Haas, 75, longtime Altus resident, were held today at the First Baptist Church of Altus with the Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Haas died Friday, July 29, 2000, at his home. Burial will be at Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Peoples Cooperative Funeral Home.

Haas was born March 15, 1925, in a farmhouse near Sickles. He was raised on the farm by his parents, Albert and Icy (Cox) Haas.

He married Florence Marie McCumber in 1950. Two sons were born to the couple, Dick and Jimmy Haas. His wife died in 1962, leaving him to raise his two sons.

He married Faye Byrd on Nov. 23, 1990, in Vernon, Texas.

He was a lifelong farmer and his hobby was working in his flower garden. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altus.

Survivors include: his wife Faye, of the home; two sons, Dick Haas and wife Paula and Jimmy Haas, all of Altus; three stepsons, Dr. Bill Byrd and wife Cindy of Amarillo, Texas, Dr. Bruce Byrd and wife Patty of Taos, N.M. and Danny Byrd and wife Bridgett of Canyon, Texas; four granddaughters, Shasta Brooking and husband Keith, of Tipton, Ericka Wiginton and husband Chad of Nashville, Tenn., Destiny Drury and Jamie Haas of Altus; one great granddaughter, Kirbi Brooking, Tipton; three step granddaughters, Katy Byrd of Amarillo, Brittany Van and Bailey Byrd of Canyon; one sister, Margie Smith of Hinton; two brothers, Bill Haas of Oklahoma City and Ronnie Haas of San Antonio, Texas.

Memorials may be made to the Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Hooper

Virgie E. Hooper, 100, longtime Eldorado resident, died Thursday evening, July 13, 2000, at the Quannah Parker Nursing Center in Quannah, Texas. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Eldorado Nazarene Church.

Leonard

Archie Leonard, 78, of Duke, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Oklahoma City. Arrangements are pending with Kincannon Funeral Home of Altus.

Little

G.W. "Bill" Little, 82, long time Altus resident, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. C.W. Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

He was born on July 21, 1918, in McKinney, Texas, to George William and Lucy Cornelia (Newcomb) Little. He served in the Army during World War II from 1942 to 1947. He served with the Headquarters company, 3rd Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in action during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart.

On July 21, 1945, in Humphreys, Bill and Wynola Hughes were united in marriage. He farmed for many years in the Jackson County area before retiring. He was an active member of the Southside Baptist Church, where he served as one of the first deacons of the church and was song leader of the worship services.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Edna Keene.

Survivors include his wife Wynola of the home and three children, Billy Eugene Little and wife Jamie of Yukon; Donna June McLachlan and husband Douglas of Ortonville, Mich.; Canellia Ann Pollock and husband, Stephen of Odessa, Texas. He was also survived by six grandchildren Jason Little and wife ReAnna of Yukon, Matthew Little of Yukon, David McLachlan and wife Beth, Kim McLachlan Burnside and husband Douglas, all of Waterford, Mich.; Amber Dawn Carraway of Houston, Texas; Jason Pollock of San Diego, Calif. and two great grandchildren, Alex Burnside and Caitlin McLachlan of Waterford, Mich.

LaRossa

Marti LaRossa, 52, Rowlett, Texas died Monday at Rowlett. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Rowlett Chapel.

She was born Sept. 16, 1947 in Dallas to Robert and Jimmie Miller. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Rex Harris of Childress, Texas; her parents Jimmy Delores Sessions of Rowlett and Robert Wayne Miller of Irving, Texas; daughters Jenifer LaRossa, Austin, Shay Yvonne Arrellano and family of Altus; sisters Lee Ann Sessions and family of Albuquerque, N.M., Sandra Brisbon of Dallas; brothers, Steven Miller and family of Dallas, John Pryor Sessions and family of Wellington, Texas, Rodger E. Parrish of Dallas and Robert E. Parrish of Dallas; grandchildren, Matthew and Kevin; and a niece.

Little

Hazel Little, Altus, died Friday at the English Village Nursing Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Father Joseph Jacobi as the celebrant. Burial will follow at the Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

She graduated from Southside High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1929. She married Bud Little June 4, 1932 in Mangum. She was a teacher from 1960-1977 at Northeast Junior High in Altus. She was a member of several organizations in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking and sewing.

She was preceded in death by both parents, three brothers, Lloyd, Jack and Wayne Holmes; and a son-in-law, Bog Fogel.

Survivors include a daughter, June Fogel of Altus; two sisters, Erie Henderson of Altus and Lucille Catlin of Enid; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.

The family requests donations be made in her name to the Prince of Peace Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice, or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

Martin

Freda A. Martin, 91, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000. No local funeral services will be held in Altus. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martin was born May 12, 1909, at Hampshire County, Massachusetts, to Frederick Ashley and Nellie Dickson Smith Martin.

She graduated from Milford High School in 1926. She served in the Women's Army Corp from May 1943 until November 1945. She served at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Sutton Coldfield and Vitry sur Scine. She received her bachelor's and mater's degrees from Ohio University and taught at Evansville University, St. Cloud University and at Cameron University.

Martin was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George Abel Martin and sisters, Alice Sibyl Martin and Doris Jane Martin Mathews.

Survivors include: a niece, Sibyl Mathews Hezlett and two nephews, Robert Clark Mathews and Henry Benjamin Mathews.

McElroy

Lawrence McElroy, 90, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Prairie Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Oxendine

The children of Ann Oxendine have suffered a great Loss. Their mother, at the age of 61 has died. She was born Aug. 23, 1938 in Richmond Hill, N.Y., first generation born to German-Irish family in the United States. In life, Mama enjoyed the capabilities of the human mind, spirit, and life itself. She was employed by Jackson County Memorial Hospital until 1988 at which time she suffered a stroke and was not able to work.

Mama was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sons.

She is survived by five children, fifteen grandchildren. Our mother, Ann will be missed and leaves a legacy of Strong will, Love, and faith. Mama is no longer suffering from the limitations left her from the stroke but instead she is singing in the Glory and Wonders of Heaven.
