Velta Lewis
Shawnee resident Velta "Lori" Lewis, 35, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Ada.

She was born April 16, 1969, in Claremore to James Pawpa and Rita Jane (Foster) Pawpa.

She attended Shawnee schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Indian Baptist Church.

Lewis lived in Shawnee all her life.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Lewis of the home; two children, Casey and Stacie Lewis of the home; father, James Pawpa of Shawnee; adopted mother, Ruby Logan of Shawnee; brother, James Pawpa Jr. of Shawnee; aunt, Laveta Rhodd Ashley of Shawnee; and other family.

Tribal rites will be 5 p.m. today at the Ellis home.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Wakolee Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Janice R. Cooper
Tecumseh resident Janice R. Cooper, 61, died Sunday, February 13, 2005, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She was born February 24, 1943, in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Elza & Willeta (Harp) Jordan.

She attended Shawnee Schools and was a 1961 graduate of Shawnee High School. She also attended Oklahoma Baptist University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1996.

On June 16, 1961, she married Jim L. Cooper in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She was reared in Shawnee. Following her marriage, she lived in Dallas for a short time. She returned to Oklahoma in 1964, and has resided in Tecumseh. Along with her husband, they own and operate Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh.

She was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh, where she served as a Church Trustee; the storytime coordinator at the Pumpkin Patch and was active in the Choir. She was also a member and past president of Chapter W PEO and had served as an International and State PEO Convention Volunteer and an International PEO Delegate. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Starr Chapter 30. She was a former Board Member of the Multi-County Pioneer Library and Past President of the Tecumseh Jaycee Jaynes. She had also served as a volunteer at Mabee Gerer Museum; the 1989 Olympic Festival in Oklahoma City; and the 1988 PGA Golf Tournament in Edmond. Janice was a Tecumseh Tennis Mom and a United States Tennis Association Umpire.

Her family was a focal point in her life and she especially enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters. She enjoyed gardening, OU Football games, world traveling, scrapbooking, cooking, and playing Bridge.

She was preceded in death by her mother on June 17, 1999; her father on November 11, 1999; and an infant daughter, Nancy Ann Cooper on February 17, 1965.

Survivors include her husband Jim L. Cooper of the home; one daughter, Cyndy Cooper of Norman; two sons and one daughter-in-law, J and Shannon Cooper of Tecumseh, Zac Cooper of Norman;

two granddaughters, Calli Cooper of Tecumseh & Jordan Cooper of Norman; two brothers & one sister-in-law, Claude & Susan Jordan of Shawnee, Earl Jordan of Shawnee; several nieces & nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family has designated the Janice R. Cooper Memorial Fund at Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh, as appropriate for memorials.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tracy Schumpert & Rev. Will Bentley officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery

The casket will remain open until 10:00 a.m. Thursday and will not be reopened following the service.

Ethel Florene Murrell
Former Shawnee resident Ethel Florene Murrell, 90, of Oklahoma City died Saturday, Feb. 12.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tecumseh Cemetery with the Rev. W.F. Crow officiating.

Caskets Inc. in Del City is directing arrangements.

Ruth Evelyn McMakin
Shawnee resident Ruth Evelyn McMakin, 78, died Monday, Feb. 14, at her home.

She was born April 18, 1926, in Web City, Mo., to John Perry Strech and Ella Mae Burrows-Strech.

She attended school in Neosho, Mo.

On April 12, 1942, she married Bill McMakin in Neosho, Mo.

She worked for Pacific Bell telephone company for eight years. She then worked at Humpty Dumpty for 13 years and later worked three years for Revco Drug as a clerk. She and her husband were the original owners of Billy Boy Bar-B-Que in Shawnee.

She was a member of the Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.

Survivors include her husband, Bill McMakin of the home; two daughters, Linda Souder and husband David of Keller, Texas, Edee Jane Elwell and husband Steve of Vancouver, Wash.; two sons, Matthew Allen McMakin of Overland Park, Kan., and Mark Strech and Rhonda McMakin of Woodward; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Gaskill Funeral Home. Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Gaskill Funeral Chapel with Michael Smith, Wayne Murphy, Steve Elwell and Carl Shaffer officiating.

Gaskill Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Lois M. Jones
Former Shawnee resident Lois M. Jones, 83, of Tecumseh died Friday, Feb. 11, at a Tecumseh nursing home.

She was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Johnsonville to Ira and Ada (McDowell) Eubanks.

She was a homemaker.

On April 1, 1941, she married Harvey Earl Jones in Pauls Valley. He preceded her in death.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Harvey Earl Jones of Tecumseh and Tommy and Dianne Jones of Shawnee; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cummings Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Sparks officiating.

Swearingen Funeral Home directed arrangements.

Betty Gleckler
Longtime Chandler resident Betty Gleckler, 80, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Oklahoma City.

She was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Sparks to John R. and Mollie (Meier) Heinze.

She worked for the Farmers Home Administration for 33 years as an account specialist.

On Feb. 5, 1948, she married Howard E. Gleckler in Chandler.

She was a member of the Patches Club and the First Christian Church in Chandler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, five brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Marshall and Jackie Gleckler of Chandler; two grandchildren, Grant and Bailey Gleckler; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 614 Manvel Ave., Chandler, OK 74834.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at the First Christian Church in Chandler with the Rev. Fred Rider officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler.

Parks Brothers Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Betty Jane Russell White
Former Drumright resident Betty Jane Russell White, 78, died Monday, Feb. 21, in Shawnee.

She was born Nov. 29, 1926, in Muldrow to Walker and Josie Russell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Loren; and brothers, Buck and Jodie Russell.

Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Ruth Russell of Okmulgee and Bud and Jean Russell of Tucson, Ariz.; and sister-in-law, Billie Russell of Carlsbad, N.M.

Memorials my be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Service is pending with Demuth Funeral Home in Oklahoma City.

Leroy Muzny
Lifelong Prague resident Leroy Muzny, 76, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Oklahoma City.

A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. today at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Prague. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Prague with the Rev. Adrian Vorderlandwehr, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Prague.

Parks Brothers Funeral Service is directing arrangements.

Ruby Grace Glenn
Norman resident Ruby Grace Glenn, 88, died Tuesday, March 1, at a Norman nursing home.

She was born June 4, 1916, in Eureka Springs, Ark., to Andrew Wooldridge King and Roma Robertson King.

She was reared in Shawnee and graduated from Dale High School.

On Oct. 12, 1935, she married Curtis Lewis Glenn. The couple lived in Shawnee before moving to Kansas. The Glenns returned to Shawnee in 1947 and lived here until 1958 when they moved to Muskogee. In 1964, they moved to Norman.

Glenn was a homemaker. She worked as a caregiver for other children.

She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six sisters and one brother.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan E. and Sherry Glenn of Cuchara, Colo., and Darrell A. and Terry Glenn of Norman; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kay and Don Anderson of Oklahoma City and Jane Cannon of Norman; one sister, Oleta McCalip of Shawnee; 10 grandchildren, Andy Glenn Anderson, Elaine Warner, David Anderson, Kristi Holderbaum, Kristi Glenn, Curtis Glenn, Eric Glenn, Shannon Glenn, Darren Glenn and Matthew Glenn Cannon; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Guardian-Norman Funeral Home. Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee.
