Bernice Crow
Bernice Crow of Tecumseh died Thursday, March 17, in Shawnee. She was 84 years old.

She was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Salina, to C.E. and Bessie (Simmons) Shepherd.

She graduated from Shawnee High School.

She married Floyd M. Crow on Nov. 7, 1941, in Shawnee. The couple then moved to Moultrie, Ga., for a short time before returning to Tecumseh.

Crow was a homemaker and also worked at Harp's Produce in Shawnee. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Tecumseh.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, David Monroe Crow; and two brothers, P.H. Shepherd and Bill Shepherd.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd Crow of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Billy Crow of Tecumseh and Gary and Judy Crow of Salt Lake City, Utah; one brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Marie Shepherd of Bethel Acres; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, E.J. and Nancy Crow, Olan and Nan Crow, Mary Willis, Mildred Ziegler and W.F. Crow; four grandchildren and spouses, Amy and Steve Wiley, Tabatha and Chris Petrasek, Brandy Crow and Laura Crow.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Tecumseh with the Rev. Dr. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

Rev. John Hayden
Former Prague resident the Rev. John "L.G." Hayden of Oklahoma City died Thursday, March 17, at a veteran's home in Lawton. He was 78 years old.

He was born Sept. 25, 1926, in Prague, to Jesse Guy and Zeota Nell (Halsey) Hayden. He attended Prairie Dale schools.

He worked at Tinker Air Force Base before becoming a Baptist minister. He pastored churches in Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Colorado and Kansas.

He served as a Sgt.1st Class in the U.S. Army, 45th Infantry Division, during World War II and the Korean conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Glenn "Doc" Hayden, Bruce Hayden, Fred Hayden, Jim Morris and Cecil "Cot" Morris; and one sister-in-law, Ray Morris.

Hayden is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Teela and the Rev. Ron Young of Oklahoma City, and Johna and Allen Knight of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Holly Hayden of Paden; seven grandchildren, Risha Young, Janna Barber, Jonathan Young, Terah Rawlings, Kami Knight, Casey Jackson and Jamie Hayden; four great-grandchildren; his wife, Ida Hayden of Anadarko; one brother, Chuck Morris of Florida; one sister and brother-in-law, Eula and Wendell Jardee of Del City; three sisters-in-law, Zea Hayden of Oklahoma City, and Nelda Morris and Shirley Hayden King, both of Shawnee.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Dale Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Young and the Rev. Allen Knight officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

Ann Lee Drinnan Boone
Former Shawnee resident Ann Lee Drinnan Boone, 92, died Thursday, March 3 in Albuquerque, N.M.

She was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1929. She attended Oklahoma College for Women and graduated in 1934 with a degree in chemistry; she was second in her class.

She married Paul L. Boone in 1937, who preceded her in death.

She taught in the Shawnee Public Schools for more than 30 years.

She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and served on the session. She was active in the WaPaHe Study Club, the Monday Book Club and Kappa Kappa Iota.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Helen Grace Drinnan.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sharon Haygood Boone of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Robert Lupton of Albuquerque, N.M.; granddaughter and husband, Drs. Susan and Sid Roberts of Knoxville, Tenn.; a great-granddaughter; sister and brother-in-law Clarissa and Col. Frank Jackson of Tucson, Ariz.; cousin, John and Eleanor Graham of Tulsa, and many other relatives.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Max Shumake officiating.

Walker Funeral Service is directing arrangements.

Mary Ann Vulgamore Emde
Former Shawnee resident Mary Ann "Granny" Vulgamore Emde of Terlton died Friday, March 4.

She was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Seminole, the daughter of Joseph Edward and Ada Dell Vulgamore. She was raised and attended school in Seminole.

Upon completion of her schooling, she moved frequently for several years, residing in Oregon and Texas before settling in California during World War II where she was a welder in the war effort.

She was married to Louis Emde and they had one daughter, Joy Ann. After a divorce, she returned to Oklahoma and worked as a waitress and as a nurse's aide at an Oklahoma City nursing home.

She retired in 1970 and moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she resided until 1981. She moved to Seminole and then Shawnee for several years. In 1997, she moved to Shippensburg, Pa., with her granddaughter and then returned to Shawnee in 2000. In November 2003, she moved to Terlton.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Vulgamore; sister, Florence Reed; granddaughter, Linda Ann Mode; husband, Louis Emde; son-in-law, Randall Mode; sister-in-law, Doris Vulgamore, and a brother-in-law, Alton Sneed.

She is survived by her daughter, Jo Ann Mode of Terlton; granddaughter and her husband, Lois Ann and Stephen Babcok of Terlton; two great-grandsons and their spouses; a great-great-granddaughter; brother and his wife, Andrew and Jean Vulgamore of Texas; sister-in-law, Mabel Vulgamore of Seminole; five stepgreat-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-great-granddaughter and other relatives.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland with the Rev. Joe Anglin officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Mannford.

Sarah Opal Smith
Opal, 87 years old, went home to be with Lord on March 3, 2005.

She was born Nov. 28, 1917 in Earlsboro to Charley and Amelia "Gray" Miller.

Opal married Tillman "Happy" Smith Jan. 31, 1936 and moved to Shawnee in 1947. They met when he came to work for her parents farming. They enjoyed farming, singing and playing in a string band together.

Her hobbies had included crocheting, sewing, gardening, painting, fishing, bowling and doll making. She enjoyed her family and helping others.

Opal had been a member of Liberty Baptist Church since 1963. She was a member of Tracy Rebekah Lodge No. 55 for many years and Rebekah 58 years.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and a daughter, Elizabeth.

Surviving children are a daughter Charlene Taylor and a son and daughter-in-law Eugene and Dolores Smith.

Grandchildren are Carol and Mark Roy, Brian and Kim White, Nelda Smith, Charles and Vin White and Nathaniel Taylor.

She had 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Services are set for 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 7 at Liberty Baptist Church, graveside following at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Carmelita Terry Buckmaster
Shawnee resident Carmelita Terry Buckmaster died Friday, May 20, at her home. She was 66 years old.

She was born Dec. 27, 1938, in Shawnee, the daughter of Leroy Buckmaster and Birdie (Gregory) Buckmaster.

She is survived by four sons and one daughter-in-law, Bobby Johnson Jr. of Pueblo, Colo., Mark and Carol Johnson, Robin Johnson and Troy Johnson, all of Shawnee; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; 12 brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Resthaven Funeral Chapel.

James Houston Bradley
James Houston Bradley, 63, died of a massive heart attack Saturday, May 28, at his home.

He was born July 13, 1942, in Franklin, La., to John and Eunice Bradley. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1960 and Oklahoma State University in 1966.

He had a long career in the oil industry and then with Cain's Coffee. He was most recently employed by Great Plains Coca-Cola, in a job at which he excelled and enjoyed.

In 1981, he married Brenda Culver, with whom he enjoyed many happy years.

He loved to fish and golf. One achievement he was proud of was the many travels he and Brenda enjoyed together. They visited all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico. He enjoyed everything from hot air ballooning to cruises. Everyone enjoyed his company and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Bradley.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda, of the home; son, Tyler Houston Bradley of Moore; three stepsons, Billy Best of Wichita Falls, Texas; Mark Best of Oklahoma City; Tim Best of Fort Supply; his mother, Eunice Bradley, of Seminole; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Susan Bradley of Philadelphia, Pa.; Matt and Jane Bradley of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Adyson, Nathan, Jonathan, Taran, Eric, Zach, three nieces and one nephew.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel with Van Newton officiating. Burial will follow. Pallbears will be Tyler Bradley, Billy Best, Mark Best, Tim Best, Matt Bradley and Bob Bradley.

Gladys O. Carlon
Gladys O. Carlon, 79, of McLoud died Friday, May 27, at a local hospital.

She was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Vale, Ore. She attended school in Perry and graduated from Perry High School.

She married Glen Carlon on June 9, 1946, at her mother's home in Perry.

Except for a time in California when she worked as a bookbinder, she was a homemaker in McLoud. She was a member of McLoud First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her son, Edmond Carlon, and one sister, Isobell Goodwin.

She is survived by her husband, Glen, of the home; three brothers, Wallace Goodwin of New Mexico, Shirley Goodwin of Perry and Glen Goodwin of Claremore; several nieces, nephews and other family.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McLoud First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Graham officiating and the Rev. Bill Derrick assisting. Burial will be at Dale Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.
