Darlene (Harden) Thompson
Shawnee resident Darlene (Harden) Thompson, 57, died Tuesday, April 12, in a traffic accident in Albuquerque, N.M.

Thompson was born Aug. 21, 1947, in Checotah to Gene and Mable C. (Yarbrough) Harden.

She graduated from Checotah High School in 1965. She received her bachelor of arts from OSU, a masters degree from OCU, and her doctorate degree from OU in Norman.

She worked in sales for the Learning 24/7 Inc at the time of her death.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Thompson, of the home; son, Eric Justin Thompson M.D., of Norman; her parents, Gene and Mable Harden; sister, Norma Stiles and her husband, Vestil; niece, April Roberts and her husband, Sammy, and a great-nephew, John Braden Roberts, all of Checotah.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Destiny Center Assembly of God Church in Checotah with the Rev. Larry Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Checotah Inc.

Virdie Dale Watson
Rossville resident Virdie Dale Watson, 93, died Wednesday, April 13.

Graveside service is 1 p.m. Monday at the Rossville Cemetery south of Wellston. Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Chandler is directing arrangements.

Patsy R. Wertz
Patsy R. Wertz, 72, of Spring Township, Pa., passed away Tuesday, April 10, at Jefferson Hospital, Neurosciences, Pa.
Pat was born in Kingston, Okla., to the late Ward J. and Beaulah (Duncan) Tennyson. She attended Shawnee Schools, graduating with the Class of 1952.

She was the wife of Richard H. Wertz.

Pat was a loving and compassionate wife, mother and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was an avid golfer and belonged to the Willow Hollow Ladies Golf League.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, Dewey, Jack and Leroy; and two sisters, Lena Mae and Imojean.

Patsy is survived by three children, Michael Anderson and wife, Melanie, of Wyomissing, Pa., Gregory Anderson and wife, Renee, of Ladera Ranch, Calif., and Catherine (Anderson) Kick and husband, Steve, of Leesburg, Va.; two step-sons, Robert Wertz of Wyomissing, Pa., and William Wertz of Mohnton, Pa.; six grandchildren, Michael, Caitlin, Mackenzie, Connor, Scott and Kendall; four step-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy (Tennyson) Harp of Shawnee and Norma Jean (Tennyson) Crosslin of Tulsa.

Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 3, at St. John's Reformed Church, Sinking Spring, Pa. Friends may call beginning 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, 612 East Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127 or at www.bafound.org.

Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading, Pa., is in charge of the arrangements.

Lena Irene (Couch) Whitford
Harrah resident Lena Irene (Couch) Whitford, 92, died Thursday, April 14, in Harrah.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Summit Ridge Seventh Day Adventist Church in Harrah with Elder Ken Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in Harrah. Smith~Parks Funeral Service Center is in charge of arrangements.

Robert H. "Bob" Kennedy
Robert H. "Bob" Kennedy, 80, died Thursday, April 14, at a local hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Shawnee. Further arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Robert Michael "Mike" Kahanek
Robert Michael "Mike" Kahanek, 56, died Thursday, April 14, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Services are pending and will be announced by Parks Brothers Funeral Service.

Rick Brakebill
Former Shawnee resident Rick Brakebill passed away Wednesday, April 13, in Norman.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Further announcements will be made by Walker Funeral Service of Shawnee.

Rick Brakebill
Former Shawnee resident Rick Brakebill, 39, died Wednesday, April 13, in Norman.

Brakebill was born to Nick and Linda Brakebill March 31, 1966, in Shawnee.

After graduating from Shawnee High School in 1984, Brakebill attended Okmulgee Tech and was employed in building construction. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, James and Margie Brakebill and Raymond and Barbara Smika.

Survivors include his mother; stepfather, Wayman Cook of Shawnee; sister and brother-in-law Scarlett and Sean Talbot of Oklahoma City; three great-aunts, Ruth McGuffee of Del City, Jenni Johnson of Grandbury, Texas, and Betty Clem of Shawnee; two nephews; several cousins; and many friends.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Father Maurus Jaeb, O.S.B., officiating. Walker Funeral Service will handle burial at Calvary Cemetery.

Theodore R. Burkhart
Lifelong Seminole resident Theodore "Ted" R. Burkhart, 88, died Thursday, April 14, at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Doyle Long officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Alma Reeves Stallings
Alma Reeves Stallings, 75, of Shawnee died Friday, April 15, at a local hospital.

She was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Wanette, the daughter of Coleman "Bud" Tuggle and Pearl (Shaw) Tuggle. She married Jess Reeves on June 28, 1944, in Purcell. She retired from Shawnee Care Center as a certified medical aide. She later married Bob Stallings on Jan. 18, 1989.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Stallings of the home; children, Betty Gee of Tecumseh, Nona and Bill Mills of Shawnee, Jesse and Virginia Reeves of Shawnee, John and Kaye Reeves of Seminole, Don and Leavetta Reeves of Shawnee, Shirley Shears of Shawnee, Pat and Rhonda Stallings, Mitch and Chang Cha Stallings, Todd Stallings, Scott and Peggy Stallings and Shannon Flowers; 24 grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, J.W. and Dena Anderson; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Jess; one great-grandson, Trinten Gale Stevenson; two sisters, Lorene Austin and Pernie D'Angelo; two brothers, Bill Tuggle and C.L. Anderson.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Resthaven Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Paul Gregg officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Robert (Bob) Hutchison Kennedy
Robert (Bob) Hutchison Kennedy, 80, a longtime Shawnee businessman died Thursday evening, April 14, at Unity Health Center, North Campus.

Bob came to Shawnee in 1949 and purchased the Larchmiller Skating Rink on Independence and Kickapoo. He later built a new "Roll-a-Way Rink" on MacArthur Street. Bob loved working with the youth and helped promote many benefits for heart funds, as well as other promotions such as multiple sclerosis fund-raising. Bob also owned "Bob's Stereo Shop" and the MacArthur Center Shops.

Bob was raised in Perry and graduated from Perry High School. He had musical parents. His father was a violinist and his mother was a piano teacher. Bob was the mascot of the U.S. Army Band. He was a drummer and had three bands throughout his high school years. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46 in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands as an electrical technician.

On May 24, 1946, he married Bettye Jo Wallace of Tonkawa. They were married in Winfield, Kan. They lived in Perry until coming to Shawnee in 1949. Bob was a member of First Christian Church in Shawnee, where he served as an elder, youth director, Sunday school teacher, youth camp counselor, chairman of the church board and as Sunday school president. He also was a member of the Roller Skating Operators Association, and the International Guild of Candle Makers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye Jo Kennedy of the home; three children, Bob Jr. of Shawnee, Gregg and wife Sherri of Oklahoma City, and Debra Van Swearingen and husband Greg of Norman. He also is survived by eight grandchildren, Michelle, Laura and Taylor Kennedy, all of Oklahoma City; Ryan Kennedy of El Segundo, Calif.; Alexis, Kevin, Eric and wife Michelle, and Noel Van Swearingen, all of Norman; and his "adopted" grandson, Miles Burke of Shawnee. Other survivors include four great-grandchildren and five sisters, Warrene Harris of Winetka, Calif., June Jerome of Shawnee, Betty Hope Anderson of Prague, Margie Talbot of San Antonio, Texas, and Donna Golliver and husband Mike of Enid.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Carol Plessinger; his parents, Ivan and Hazel Kennedy; and a grandnephew, Robert Anderson.

A visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Walker Funeral Service. Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, 1625 N. Broadway.

Thomas "Tom" D. Owen
Shawnee resident, Tom Owen, 86, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 13.
He was born May 26, 1920, in Forreston, Texas to John Frank and Edna Bernice (Dugan) Owen.

Tom attended school in Oklahoma City. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an Aviation Machinist's Mate, Second Class. After several years as a retail grocery manager, he became an independent business owner and later began his career with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1982 at the age of 62.

He accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior when he was 12 years of age at Dumas Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He faithfully served the Lord as a deacon in several Southern Baptist Churches in Oklahoma. At the time of his death he was a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church, Shawnee.

Tom married Esther Ruth Lauderdale on August 26, 1939, in Oklahoma City. They had three children. She preceded him in death in Feb. 1974.

He married Velma Ruth Garrison March 31, 1974, in Oklahoma City. After their marriage they moved to Sulphur and lived there for 25 years. In 2003 they moved to Shawnee.

Tom was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Dubois and Pat Stemm; one brother, Frank Owen; and one grandson, Jeffrey Dale Hunter.

He is survived by his wife Velma Owen of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Jackie Owen of Shawnee, and Garry and Regina Garrison of Littleton, Colo.; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Ruth Hunter of Ridgedale, Mo., Jan Bell of Kansas City, Mo., Beverly and Ret. Lt. Col. Don Mitchell, of Yuma, Ariz., and Nora Jean "Soozie" and David Orahood, of Oklahoma City; one brother, Al Owen and wife, Mary, of Redding, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Lou Boddy and husband, Robert, of Hobbs, N.M.; and Harriet Bailey and husband, Richard, of Amherst, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, Keri Hunter, Terry and Michele Owen, Thom and Amy Hunter, Kurtis and Lori Bell, Roger and Mia Owen, Kristie and John Jeans, Robin and Lance Davis, Valerie and Rolf Munk, Ryan and Tonya Orahood, Lincoln Garrison, Shelly and Kevin Johnson, and Kristen Orahood; 17 great-grandchildren, Jonathan Hunter, Colton Owen, Zachary Jeans, William Hunter, Nathan Jeans, Summer Owen, Aaron Jeans, Hayley Garrison, Cheyenne Garrison, Dalton Orahood, Kaylee Davis, Nikolas and McKinley Munk, Oren Munk, Gavin Orahood, Lauren Davis, and Ty Munk; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. today at Rock Creek Baptist Church with Brother Eddie Malphrus of Garland, Texas and Brother Richard Zimmer, Rock Creek Baptist Church in Shawnee, officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Oklahoma City.

The family has designated the Rock Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 44900 Hardesty Rd.; Shawnee, OK 74801, as appropriate for memorials.

Curtis A. Gibson
Norman resident Curtis A. Gibson died Sunday, April 15, in Crescent at the age of 41.

Mr. Gibson was born Nov. 10, 1965, in Norman.

He is survived by his mother, Loretta Gibson of Norman; his brother, Leon Yandell and his wife of Norman; daughters, Jennifer Gibson of Norman and Melanie Gibson of Ponca City; niece, Paisley Yandell; and numerous extended family.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Gibson Cemetery in Norman with Melvin Mann officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service, Norman.
