Vera Carpenter
Vera Carpenter, 83, of McLoud died Thursday at a local nursing home.

She was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Platter, Okla., to Jim and Stella Moore.

She married Marvin Elmer "Jack" Carpenter on Sept. 28, 1935, in Antlers.

Carpenter was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of McLoud.

Carpenter was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers.

She is survived by their three children and their spouses, Eugene and Shirley Carpenter of McLoud, Mary Lou and Ed Hendershot of Shawnee and Kathy and Roy Bourne of Fletcher; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Sparks and the Rev. Montie Campbell officiating. Burial followed at Dale Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Ernest Brown
Ernest "Gerald" Brown, 67, of Shawnee died Sunday in his home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bythel Friend and the Rev. Larry Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery.

Further announcements are pending with Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Willis Manford Dirks
Willis Manford Dirks, 78, died Friday in Carney.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; a daughter, Mary Jane Keiser of Oklahoma City; three sisters, Zella Unruh of Scott City, Kan., Velma Wenger of Hesston, Kan., and Lois Koehn of Greensburg, Kan.; and three grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday at Fleener Chapel of Greensburg, Kan., with the Rev. Larry Keiser officiating. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Caring Hands Hospice of Stroud, care of Fleener Funeral Home, P.O. Box 763, Greensburg, Kan., 67054.

Clara E. Burton
Clara E. (Mills) Burton, 67, of Macomb died Sunday at an Oklahoma City hospital.

She was born Nov. 26, 1933, in Pindall, Ark., the daughter of Jack Mills and Zora (Gary) Mills. Burton was reared and attended school in Pindall, Ark.

She moved to Tecumseh for several years before moving to Macomb, where she lived for the past 15 years.

She was a dry-press operator at Pierre's Cleaners of Shawnee for nine years. She helped pioneer the Bethel Acres Assembly Church and was a longtime member there.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sons, Thomas William Hawkins, Jimmy Dale Hawkins and Fletcher Lynndale Hawkins.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Loretta Burton and Diana and Mike Frisby, all of Shawnee; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Twila Hawkins of Tecumseh and Kenneth and Carla Hawkins of Macomb; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Wilma Glascoe of Bergman, Ark., Betty and Earl Faddis of Belfont, Ark., Norma and Everett Munday, of Western Grove, Ark., Josie and John Fahnolz of Sapulpa and JoAnn Campbell of Fayetteville, Ark.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert H. and Polly Mills and Jack Jr., and JoAnn Mills, all of Bergman, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Bethel Acres Assembly with the Rev. Lonnie Hurst officiating. Burial will follow at Glencoe Cemetery in Pindall, Ark., at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Services are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel of Shawnee.

Larry R. Byrd
Longtime Shawnee resident Larry R. Byrd, 56, died Friday at his residence.

He was born March 15, 1946, in Shawnee to Floyd and Oma (McElfresh) Byrd.

He attended Pleasant Grove School and graduated from Shawnee High School.

Byrd worked as a bricklayer for 35 years.

He married Sandra Hawkins on Oct. 28, 1965, in Shawnee.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Dale Byrd.

Survivors include his wife Sandra Byrd of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Bryan Keith and Dawn Byrd of Shawnee; his mother, Oma Switch of Shawnee; two grandchildren, Nicole and Michael Byrd of Shawnee; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Bill and Beverly Byrd of Apopka, Fla., and Glen Byrd of Shawnee; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and Max Buchanan of Prairie Grove, Ill., and Carla and Jimmie Johnson of Checotah, Okla.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Craig and the Rev. Randy Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home of Shawnee.

J.C. Fillman
J.C. Fillman, 78, of Houston, Texas, died Thursday in Brookshire, Texas.

He was born May 6, 1924, in McLoud, the son of D.I. and Florence Fillman.

Fillman married Aunzell Bales in 1946 and began work on a bachelor of science degree in accounting at Oklahoma A&M.

Upon graduation in 1949, he was employed as an accountant at Mobil Oil. Twenty years later, he continued his accounting career with National Credit Union Administrators as an auditor. After serving there for 23 years, Fillman retired in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Sue Fillman; an uncle, Frank Fillman; and a brother Bill Fillman.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Aunzell Fillman, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Blake and Lynn Fillman of Oklahoma City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Dr. Herman Rios of MacClenny, Fla., and Pam and John Boaz of Houston; a sister, Kathryn Lightfoot; a brother, Tony Fillman; 10 grandchildren, Amy and Sarah Fillman, Andy, Phillip, Maria, Stephen and David Rios and Billy, Abbi and Christina Boaz; and four great-grandchildren.

A service will be 2 p.m. today at Exchange Avenue Baptist Church, 1312 S. Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Oklahoma City.

Arrangements are being handled by Resthaven Funeral Home, Oklahoma City.

Burt Arnold
Burt Arnold, 66, of Prague died Saturday in his home.

He was born Nov. 7, 1935, in Frederick, Md., the son of Roger and Emma Marie (Kaping) Arnold.

He grew up in Union Bridge, Md., and later lived in the Prague area.

He graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in June 1961 with a degree in electrical engineering and worked toward a master's degree at Wichita State University.

He married Carolyn Sue Stanley Aug. 14, 1959, in Cainsville, Mo.

He served four years in the U.S. Air Force in repair and maintenance of airborne fire control systems and was stationed in Arkansas, Colorado and Georgia.

He worked for Western Electric as a field engineer for the Nike-Zeus Missile Project at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and Hughes Aircraft Co. in Los Angeles, Calif. He worked at Boeing-Wichita as a structural test instrumentation engineer and for Emerson Electronics and Space Division. He finished his career as an electrical engineer in automated test equipment at Tinker Air Force Base in November 1990.

After retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher at Harrah, Choctaw and Prague schools and was active in Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Oklahoma County. He also started a small farm when he moved to Prague in 1966.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Amos Arnold of Mora, Minn.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Arnold of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard Paul and Mary Elizabeth Arnold of Frisco, Texas, and John Leslie Arnold of Grapevine, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Lynne and Scott McCabe of Sapulpa; four grandchildren, Brandon Short Arnold, Erynn Elizabeth, Emily Jessica and Meghan McCabe; and a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Virginia Arnold, of Brandon, Miss.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with the Rev. Steve Roach officiating. Burial will follow at Prague Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.

Liza Jones
Liza Jones, 90, of Tecumseh died Sunday.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tracy Schumpert officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Betty Jo Myatt
Betty Jo Myatt, 76, of Konawa died Sunday at an Ada hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Waldron of Konawa and Margaret Tillman of Newalla; four sons, James Andrew Tillman III of Fayetteville, Ga., Joseph Daniel Hope-Tillman of Olathe, Kan., Donald Tillman of Lawton and Eddie Tillman of Konawa; a stepdaughter, Shirley Adkins of Chickasha; a stepson, Ed Myatt of Konawa; two brothers, Jesse Irby of Warr Acres and David Irby of Blanchard; four sisters, Beverly Towler of Ralls, Texas, Patricia McGuire of Bristow, Sandra Atkinson of Konawa and Lynda McCraw of Konawa; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Wesley Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home in Konawa.

David Vernon Plank
David Vernon Plank, 47, of Tecumseh died Sunday.

He was born June 8, 1955, in Okinawa, Ryukus Islands, to Odas Paul and Billie Gene (Townsend) Plank.

He was a 1974 graduate of Western Heights High School and attended several business courses at South Oklahoma City Community College and Moore-Norman Vo-Tech.

He married Susan E. Watts May 23, 1981, in Yukon.

He worked as a full-time bus driver. He also worked part-time at KGFF and KQSR radio stations.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Plank of the home; two sons, Paul and Kevin Plank of the home; his parents; an aunt, Ophelia Munson of Checotah; an uncle, Jesse Plank of Hinton; a great aunt, Pearl Cherry of Oklahoma City; and several cousins.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Leslie Long and Amanda Lockwood officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
