Burden

C.T. Burden died Monday, August 9, 2004 in Graham, Texas. He was 80 years old.

He was born June 8, 1924 in Granite and moved to Graham, Texas in 1987 from Bethany. Burden was a retired civil service worker and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Survivors include: wife, Leta Burden of Graham, Texas; sons, Tom Burden and wife, Diedra of Breckenridge, Texas and Jerry Burden and wife, Pat of Norman; sister, Norma Taylor of Altus; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for C.T. Burden will be private. McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home in Graham, Texas is in charge of arrangements.

Pope

Larry Eugene Pope was born March 16, 1954, in Topeka, Kan., to Wilma Kathryn (Burnett) Pope of Lone Wolf and Faris Eugene Pope of Hobart. He died Aug. 10, 2004. The family moved back to Lone Wolf following Faris' discharge from the Air Force and made their home in Lone Wolf. The family moved to Bethany in June 1967, and then bought a house in Oklahoma City in January 1968. Larry attended Lone Wolf until eighth grade. He attended Taft Junior High School for one year, and then graduated from Northwest Classen High School. He then enlisted in the army upon graduating from high school.

Larry lived most of his life in Oklahoma City. He never married. He attended the Free Methodist Church in Oklahoma City but remained a registered member of the Lone Wolf United Methodist Church.

His main hobbies were playing Bingo, Rook, and Skipbo, and talking on the phone.

Larry was preceded in death by both parents.

He is survived by one brother, Gary Wayne Pope, and three sisters; Sue Ellen Merritt, Joy Lynn Pope, all of Lone Wolf, and Patricia Ann Pope of Oklahoma City. Also, two half brothers, James Elwood Pope and Michael Gene Pope of Oklahoma City; six nieces, Kelly Tedford, Keri Ortega, Carissa Teague, Sandra Tedford, Dawn Nauman, and Katie Pope, and one nephew, George Tedford, Jr. Also survived by his uncles and aunts, Jack Burnett of Oklahoma City, Mae Arndt, Helen Thompson, Evelyn Glasscock, and Bob Pope of Hobart.

Paul Pope of Clinton and numerous cousins, great aunts and uncles.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the First Methodist Church in Lone Wolf, C.M. Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Lone Wolf Cemetery under the direction of People's Co-operative Funeral Home.

Moberly

Bernard "Bernie" W. Moberly, 79, longtime Altus area businessman, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, August 14, 2004 at Kincannon Funeral Home with Reverend George Lupton officiating. Burial will follow services at 3 p.m. at Canadian Valley Cemetery, three miles northeast of Calumet, under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Moberly was born August 17, 1924 in Calumet to Claude Edward and Grace (Winfrey) Moberly, who were pioneer farmers in Canadian County. He graduated from Calumet High School before entering the United States Army in March of 1946. He served during WWII in the Southwest Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in October of 1947.

He married Charlotte Jones on June 4, 1950, in El Reno. To this union was born two daughters, Kittie and Susan. The Moberly's moved to Altus in 1958 to establish Moberly Oil Company. Bernie was the first Shamrock dealer in Oklahoma where he managed 13 gas stations and two boat docks at Lake Altus and Fort Cobb. He and Glenn Southall owned and operated an extensive farm wholesale business including propane and feed supplies. Bernie farmed wheat and cotton and raised livestock in Jackson County.

Bernie and Charlotte were founding members of Grace United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school, was a youth director and was named Methodist Man of the Year. He remained active in the church throughout his lifetime.

He was a lifetime member of the Altus Lions Club and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was chaplain for two years of the Western Prairie Good Sam's. Bernie and Charlotte were foster parents for approximately 10 years, caring for 15 children, one of which remains a part of the family, along with her children. He loved to travel and spent his retirement years enjoying Alaska, Canada, Hawaii and coast to coast in his motor home. Bernie loved Altus, his family, his church, his friends and nature. He was a serving, loving and selfless man.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Naomi and two brothers, Clyde and Delbert.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Altus; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kittie and Dr. David Huey, Altus, Susan and Mark Amstutz, Tulsa; three granddaughters, Meagan and Kalyn Huey, both of Altus, Andrea Nunn of Tulsa; a grandson, Derek Nunn of Tulsa; a foster daughter, Julie Brower and her two children, Blake and Laurel Music, Mesa, Ariz..; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jerry and Don Thompson, Mabel and Dave Riley and Lucille and Bob Heitzman, all of Yukon; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Alma Moberly of Calumet, Wayne and Susan Moberly of Ballwin, Mo.; many other friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation or to the Epileptic Foundation.

Martin

Frank W. Martin, 72, died Aug. 10, 2004.

He was born to Raymond Morris and Elva Annona Pursley Martin on July 4, 1932, in Amarillo, Texas. When he was a young boy, the family moved to Altus and he graduated from Altus High School in 1950.

He joined the Navy and after four years of service, he was honorably discharged. He attended Okmulgee Tech and received his electronic technician associates degree. He met and married Jequita Newberry of Okmulgee. He moved back to Altus. He worked with his dad at Martin's Radio Repair. He also worked at Garrett and Herron repairing televisions and at Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa.

He then obtained employment at Altus Air Force Base as an electronics technician in civil service. While there he worked communications during the Cuban crisis. He helped design the C-5 and C-141 training simulators for pilot ground school.

He retired in 1986 and started working as a special education bus driver for Altus Public Schools. He loved those special kids but had to retire because of his health in 1996.

He also enjoyed traveling and exploring the backroads, especially of Southwest Oklahoma. He was a ham radio operator (K5KCJ) since 1956. He was the secretary of the Sunday school at the Church of the Nazarene and drove the church bus. He was also a Sunday school teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth and sisters Sue Ella and Clara G.

He is survived by a loving family: his wife of the home, Delia Jequita; two sons, Danny Martin and wife Ruth of Henryetta, and David Martin and wife, Kathi of Blair; a daughter, Donna Levi and husband Tim of Oklahoma City; 12 grandchildren, Malinda and husband Wes George, Danelle and husband Bill Ferqueron, Alicia Martin, Benjamin Martin and David Martin, Jason, Jennie and Janice Levi, Maegan and Matthew Martin; brother, Raymond and wife Rebecca Martin of Blair; sister, Evelyn Utterback of Oklahoma City; his uncle, Frank Martin and wife Lottie of Oklahoma City and many nieces and nephews. He has been a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be missed greatly.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, August 13, 2004, at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Dal Newberry, the Rev. Lum Newberry and the Rev. Gary Bohannan officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Downing

Hazel (Sadler) Downing, 90, died at Hospice of East Texas Homeplace in Tyler, Texas. She was born Sept. 17, 1913, to Gearld C. and Ellen (Hagar) Lee in Mangum. She married Lonnie Alton Sadler. Lonnie preceded her in death in 1985. In her youth she picked cotton and worked at the movie theater and laundry. Later in life she met and married Lawrence Thomas Downing on Nov. 24, 1993, in DeQueen, Ark. They later moved to Big Sandy, Texas. During her retirement she belonged to the quilting club.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Arlen Sadler and her first husband, Lonnie Sadler.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence Downing; a stepdaughter, Gladys Halford; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services for Downing will be held at Greer Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Houston will officiate. Greer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Allen

Floyd Marlin Allen, 91, of Richardson, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 in Abilene, Texas. Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Peoples Cooperative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf.

Allen was born in Delhi in 1912 and married Mary Sue Reeves in 1936. They lived in Altus for 32 years where Floyd was a Conoco Wholesale dealer. He was a member of Kiwanis and loved to hunt, fish and camp. They were members of Hudson and Elm Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. In 1968, they moved to Richardson where he worked as a printer for Rockwell International. They were members of Richardson East Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Lou Allen; one sister, Grace Baker; and brothers Tom, Bill, Joe, Marvin and Lloyd. His wife of 63 years Mary Sue died Aug. 14, 2000.

Survivors include a son, Keith M. Allen and wife Kathy of Chula Vista, Calif.; a daughter, Judy Reeves and husband Perry of Abilene; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tipton Children's Home, Box 370, Tipton, OK 73570, or Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford St. Abilene, TX 79606. Cards to family may be sent to 810 Green Valley, Abilene, TX 79601.

Freeland

Funeral service for Mary Barbara Freeland, 90, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Frederick, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the Gray Gish Funeral Home Chapel of Frederick with Rev. Les Banks, pastor of Tesca Baptist Church, officiating.

Mrs. Freeland died Sunday morning, Aug. 8, 2004, in an Oklahoma City hospital. Burial will be at the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home.

Mary Barbara was born on March 7, 1914, in Hollister to Joseph and Gay (McDaniell) Nill. She grew up and attended schools in Hollister. She graduated from high school in 1932. She married Reuben Freeland on July 15, 1934, in Hollister. She worked for Centra Leather Goods prior to working at McFall's Pharmacy, from which she retired in 1980. She had lived in Oklahoma City the past five years to be near family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Frederick.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Reuben, on Sept.19, 1985; son-in-law, Coy Dennis, on Dec. 3, 1998.

She is survived her son, Richard Freeland and his wife, Nancy of Westerville, Ohio; one daughter, Robetha Dennis of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, Cara Vinson, Amy Freeland, Jennifer Freeland, Regina Reid, and Renee Williams; four great grandchildren, Aaron Whorton, Ashley Bingham, Dylan Williams, and Conner Williams; two great great grandchildren, Ellie & Bishop Bingham.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church of the donor's choice, in loving memory of Mary Barbara Freeland. Funeral Services are under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home of Frederick.

Pawelski

Edith Eulon (Bannister) Pawelski, 75, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Mangum, was born Jan. 24, 1929, in Mangum to Katy L. Ely Bannister and Harrison T. Bannister and went home to our Lord August 7, 2004.

Edith had lived in Altus for three decades before moving to Tucson in 2003. She was loved for her volunteer work at Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Sunday School at the First Baptist Church in Altus.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Dawn Barbarisi and family of Tucson, Ariz., Kyle Derr and family, Dewayne Derr and family, and nine great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at Roselawn Memorial Park, Mangum, under the direction of People's Co-operative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf.
