Minnie Lou Matthesen
Longtime Meeker resident Minnie Lou Matthesen died Friday, Aug. 27, at the age of 85.

She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Moore, to Earl and Lula (Routon) Siler. She grew up in south Oklahoma City and Moore and graduated from Moore High School.

She married Lynn Matthesen on Jan. 22, 1937, and together they farmed and operated the family dairy. She moved to Meeker in 1959.

She was a member of the Church of God and belonged to congregations in Moore, Capitol Hill, Shartel and Shawnee. She was active in the community, serving as precinct worker for the election board, the fair and home extension boards in Lincoln County.

In her retirement, Matthesen and her husband were members of the Road Runners.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Tyson Siler.

She is survived by her son, Don; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lurene Stigler and Karen and Richard Belcher; three brothers, Jack, Guy and Bill Siler; one sister, Betty Siler; one sister-in-law, Lola Siler; seven grandchildren, Shon, Seth, Beth, Cheryl, Jeanne, Jill and Julie, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. today at Vondel L. Smith and Son Funeral Home, 6934 S. Western, Oklahoma City. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Moore City Cemetery.

Arley Don Shorter
Arley Don Shorter of Shawnee died Saturday, Aug. 28, at Norman Regional Hospital. He was 54 years old.

Service will be Wednesday at Gaskill Funeral Chapel. Further arrangements will be announced.

Walter E. Barnes
Walter E. Barnes of Tecumseh died Friday, Aug. 27, at a local hospital. He was 97 years old.

He was born June 15, 1907, in Richland County, Ill., to Harvey Van Barnes and Cora Ratcliffe Barnes.

He married Cleo Mary Riggs on May 14, 1927. She preceded him in death.

He later married Thelma Cleveland on Sept. 6, 1987.

He worked as a field and plant mechanic for 41 years at Sinclair Oil. He also worked nine years as a picture framer at Steiner's Paint.

He was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Lindel Barnes; one grandson, Robert Swinson; his parents, two sisters and one brother.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Barnes of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Roella and Ray Swinson of Shawnee; one daughter-in-law, Lois Barnes of Munds Park, Ariz.; two grandsons, Randy Swinson and his wife, Ann, of Wichita, Kan., and Roger Swinson of Shawnee; two granddaughters, Kathy Barnes of Chandler, Ariz., and Julie Bernal and her husband, Jim, of Cave Creek, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Jane and Garland Thomas of Norman, and Sue Ann and Gerald McDaniel of Lakewood, Colo.; stepgrandchildren, Tracy Thomas of Norman, Jay and Kimberly Thomas of Edmond, Mason McDaniel of Denver, Katrina and Dan Cavaliere of Littleton, Colo.; three stepgreat-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with the Rev. Kay Smith and the Rev. Tracy Schumpert officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Shawnee or Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

John Earl Waldman
John Earl Waldman, 71, went to be with his Lord, Monday, Aug. 27, 2007.

Born June 17, 1936, in Chandler to H.W. Waldman and Blanche (Greenfield) Waldman.

John was a retired successful independent oil and gas producer. He was co-owner of Landers & Waldman, Inc. for 25 years, in partnership with Ed Landers of Okemah. John and Ed had a very special and unique business relationship. John was also a very successful insurance agent with Farm Bureau for 25 years, retiring in 1986. He was a lifelong farmer rancher, which was his passion.

John also served in the Oklahoma National Guard. He was a member of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, Davenport Chamber of Commerce, member and former board member of American Petroleum Institute, and former member of Lincoln County Cattlemen's Association.

John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chandler and a board member of The Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma

John lived his life as a shining example of a Christian life. His testimony is a brilliant example of the amazing impact Christ had on his life, and because of Christ the enormous impact he had on everyone around him. His dynamic spirit and unyielding generosity touched the lives of everyone around him. His family was always an important source of strength and pleasure for him and he loved playing with his grandchildren during holidays and his numerous cookouts. He will be greatly missed by his family and we will be awaiting the day that he will meet us at heaven's gate.

Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Sedalia Laffoon Waldman; daughter, Kelly Waldman; sisters, Margie Waldman Reedy and Sue Ella Waldman.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Joni Shelton Waldman. Others left to cherish his memory include his three sons, Wade Waldman and wife, Carrie, Brent Waldman and wife, Susan, and Len Waldman, all of Chandler; one daughter, Traci Waldman of Minneapolis, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roxie Summers of Sherman, Texas, and Pat Hutchison of Edmond; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Chandler with the Rev. Rick Blackwell and Brother Charles Luster officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, Chandler, under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Chandler.

Tommy Rostykus
Tommy Rostykus, 76, of Harrah died Wednesday in Harrah.

Survivors include his wife, Lucile Rostykus; three sons and daughters-in-law, Leo and Janie Rostykus of Harrah, Johnny and Linda Rostykus of Harrah, and Robert and Becky Rostykus of Tulsa.; two brothers, Leo Rostykus and John Rostykus, both of California; one sister, Annie Tytenicz of Jones; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Harrah. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in Harrah under the direction of Asa Smith Funeral Service of Harrah.

Cecil Lee Kernell
Former Shawnee resident Cecil Lee Kernell of Oklahoma City died Saturday, Aug. 28, in Oklahoma City. He was 53 years old.

He was born Jan. 21, 1951, in Shawnee to Simeon James Kernell Sr. and Amelia Cully Kernell.

He attended Acme Elementary and Dale High School. He graduated in 1969 and attended East Central University.

He worked for Oklahoma Natural Gas for 17 years as well as other national gas compression companies.

He was a member of Hill Top Presbyterian Church in Wewoka and the Seminole Nation.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Simeon James Kernell Jr.

He is survived by two sons, Roland Kernell of Tulsa and Gregory Kernell of Shawnee; three brothers, Glen Kernell Sr. of Oklahoma City, John Kernell of Shawnee and Roger Kernell of Oklahoma City; one sister, Norma Jean Hopkins of Oklahoma City, and one granddaughter, Courtney Kernell of Shawnee.

Wake service will be 7:30 p.m. today at Mekusukey Baptist Church. Other arrangements are pending with Cooper Funeral Home.

Denton Oliver
Tecumseh resident Denton Oliver, 85, died Monday, Aug. 30, in Shawnee.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Dale Smith officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee.

Alma Susan Cross
Stroud resident Alma Susan Cross, 96, died Saturday, Aug. 28, in Stroud.

Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stroud Christian Church in Stroud with Charles Terry officiating. Burial will be in the Harrelson Cemetery in Cushing.

Parks Brothers Funeral Services in Stroud is directing arrangements.

James Wilfrid Marak
Life long Meeker resident James Wilfrid Marak, 88, departed this life Thursday, August 30, in Meeker.

Wilfrid, the son of Joseph Theodore and Mary (Petricek) Marak, was born May 17, 1919, in Meeker.

He graduated from Meeker High School with the class of 1938.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the 71st Field Artillery Division as a first lieutenant for four years and two months. He received a battlefield commission May 29, 1945. His service decorations included the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with two bronze stars.

Wilfrid married Louise C. Schlitz Nov. 10, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ponca City. She preceded Wilfrid in death Jan. 2, 2002.

He worked at Jonco Aircraft prior to becoming a full-time dairy farmer. Wilfrid was a member of the American Legion, third Degree Knights of Columbus, and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Meeker.

Also preceding Wilfrid in death were his parents; one brother, Edmund Marak; and one sister, Mary Jo Mathews.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Stephen J. and Robbie Marak of Meeker, and Jim R. Marak of Meeker; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice L. and Dale Broudrick of Meeker, Catherine and Dana Roberts of Prague, Margaret Seymour of Meeker and Pat Scully of Choctaw, Carolyn and Darrell Sims of Meeker, Joan and Tommy Walters of Prague, Mary Karen and Donnie Wallis of Shawnee; brothers, Joseph P. Marak of Norman, Louis D. Marak of Kansas City, Mo.; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be noon today at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Meeker.

A wake service will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Meeker.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Meeker with the Rev. Shane Tharp officiating. Burial will follow at Sunny Side Cemetery in Meeker.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.

Ruth Velma Crain
Maud resident Ruth Velma (Fry) Crain, 89, died Friday at a Shawnee hospital.

Survivors include her husband, E.U. Crain of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Mary Ann Crain of Maud; a granddaughter; two brothers, Bill Fry of Trinidad, Colo., and George Judd of Cortez, Colo.; two sisters, Pearl Rose of Hastings, Neb., and Aletha Jones of Elk City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church of Tecumseh with Elder Glenn Rooker officiating. Burial will follow at Cummings Cemetery of Maud under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home.
