Edith Leona Watson
Tecumseh resident Edith Leona Watson, 87, died Thursday, Sept. 9, at a local hospital.

She was born April 13, 1917, in Asher to George and Estella Hunt.

She married Glen Watson Oct. 7, 1933, in Shawnee. She was a homemaker and a licensed hairdresser.

Preceding her in death were her husband and a son, Glen Watson Jr.

Survivors include a son, Thurman Watson of Shawnee and a sister and brother-in-law, Maude and Bill Cox of Tecumseh.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Tim Walker officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Janice LeEtta Johnson
Meeker resident Janice LeEtta Johnson, 71, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 11, following a long illness with her family by her side.

Janice was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Commerce, Okla., to E.H. "Hank" and Olive Malone.

Janice worked in procurement for TG&Y, in the Engineering Department with AT&T and taught piano. Most importantly, she was a beloved wife and mother. Janice was an active member of First Baptist Church in Meeker, where she was the pianist for many years.

Janice is survived by her husband of 52 years, James B. Johnson of Meeker: son, James H. Johnson and wife, Vanessa, of Meeker; daughters, Sherri Dupy and husband, Scott, of Edmond, Lorri Standlee and husband, Rodney, of Meeker; five grandchildren, Eric Johnson and wife, Dasha of Meeker, Jennifer Jones and husband, Jake, of Meeker, Ashley Dubler and husband, Jon, of Meeker, Kendra and Kayla Standlee of Meeker; one great-grandchild, Jaxon Dubler of Meeker; her sister, Glenna Osborne and husband, Ken, of Oklahoma City; and nephews, Rusty Sullins of Edmond and Scott Sullins and wife, Kelly, of Lawton.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Meeker First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Sunny Side Cemetery in Meeker.

The family would like to thank the staff of Loving Care Hospice of Shawnee for their care and devotion during the last few months. The family would also like to express their gratitude to the many friends and neighbors for their support and generosity.

Teresa Merle Gerlich
Teresa Merle Gerlich, 62, of Prague died Wednesday in Oklahoma City.

She was born Jan. 3, 1940, in Prague, the daughter of William Ezra and Beulah Mae (Keys) Rowland.

Gerlich had been a resident of Prague for most of her life. She worked as a certified nurse aide at Parkland Manor Nursing Home for 17 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her children's father, Bill Gerlich.

Survivors include a son, Charles Gerlich of Prague; a daughter, Teresa Lane-Hoskins of Newalla; a grandson, David Joe Lane of Shawnee; two granddaughters, Amy Shree Cox of Prague and Corie Dawn Lane of Tecumseh; a brother, Bud Rowland of Del City; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Karen Rowland of Ellensburg, Wash., and Leroy and Shirley Rowland of Choctaw; two sisters, JoAnn Mouka of Meeker and Mary Hall of Prague; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Reda and Ernest Leverich of Choctaw and Carol and John Walker of Meeker; and a great-granddaughter.

A service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Free Will Baptist Church in Prague with the Rev. Randall Miller officiating. Burial will be in Prague cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Parks Brothers Funeral Service.

Gladys Opal Lewis
Gladys Opal Tiller Lewis, 90, of Sapulpa died Wednesday at Sapulpa.

She lived in Seminole from 1942 until 1997, when she moved to Sapulpa.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Maxwell and Christine Lewis of Sapulpa; Gary and Vicki Lewis of Healdton and David and Maria Lewis of Madison, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. today at Swearingen Chapel in Seminole with the Rev. Larry Stoops officiating. Burial will be at Little Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Neoma Pensoneau Baptiste
Shawnee resident Neoma Pensoneau Baptiste died Sunday, Sept. 9, at her home at the age of 80. Neoma was born April 29, 1927, in Seminole. She married Marion Jesse Baptiste.

She was a loving mother of 13 and lifelong St. Benedict's Catholic Church member. Preceding her in death were her parents, Vina Belle and Narcise Pensoneau; beloved husband, Marion Jesse Baptiste; brothers, Cecil and Edward Pensoneau; son, Jerry Orr; son and daughter, LeRoy and Jody Baptiste; granddaughter, Misty McConnico and cousin, Grace Ethel Derrick.

Survivors include her sisters, Wanita Clifford of Shawnee, Velma Jones of Ponca City, and Ernestine Green of McLoud; sister- in-law, Cleo Pensoneau of Shawnee; daughter, Barbara Orr and family of Edmond, Dwayne Orr, Jessica, Jordan, Samantha, Becky and Josh; daughter and son-in-law, Donna Monju and Doug Downing and family Jesse Downing, and Francis and Derrick Wheeler of Redding, Calif; daughter-in-law, Kathy Baptiste and family of Shawnee, Kim and Don Melot, Tracey Baptiste, Justin and Tabitha Baptiste,Wesley Baptiste, Storm, Joey, Austin, Gabrielle, and Braden; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Cheryl Baptiste and family of Tecumseh, Donette and Jason Yates, Derrick Baptiste and Karla Shockey, Kulson, Gage, and Brody; son, Charles Baptiste and family of Shawnee, Brandon Baptiste, Melissa Baptiste, Virgil Owens and Jeffrey, Journie, and Jamir; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Rhonda Baptiste and family of Shawnee, Amy Tucker, Blaze Wiggins, Jesse and Ross; son, Rick Baptiste of Shawnee; daughter, Nita

A Rosary was held Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Walker Funeral Service Chapel. Service will be 10 a.m. today at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with the Rev Maurus P. Jaeb, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Association or to St. Benedict's Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 632 N. Kickapoo Street, Shawnee, OK 74801-6070. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Evelyne Rosemary Kirk
Neosho, Mo., resident Evelyne Rosemary Kirk, 87, died 8:14 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.

She was born Jan. 22, 1920, in a log cabin near Valley Falls, Kan., the daughter of Ray and Freda (Burton) Tosh. On Sept. 11, 1944, she married Elmer Lee Hap Kirk in Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Kirk, a member of the United Methodist Church, was homemaker, wife, and mother. She loved to paint, sew and work in her yard.

Preceding her in death were her husband on Oct. 6, 1966; two brothers, Glen and Ralph Tosh; and one sister, Willa Vogel. She is survived by two children, Stanley D. Kirk and his wife, Jan, of Joplin and Kelly D. Kirk of Shawnee; two sisters, Jean Barge and Gayle Albright; sister-in-law, Alma Tosh, all of Topeka, Kan; five grandchildren, Jody Kirk, Bobby Giger, Kim Cummings, Rick Shoenberger and Eric Shoenberger.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the United Methodist Church, Neosho, Mo. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park, Joplin, Mo. Memorial contribution may be made to the United Methodist Church, Neoshso c/o P.O. Box 66, Neosho, MO 64850. Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.

Johnny B. Vaughn
Longtime Seminole and Prague resident Johnny B. Vaughn, 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Seminole Estates Nursing Center in Seminole. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Dr. Jack Medlock officiating and assisting will be Mickey Shaw. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery North of Seminole with military honors. Service under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Marjorie Joan Cowden
Chandler resident Marjorie Joan Cowden passed away Thursday, Sept. 13.

She was born January 28, 1937, in Wellston to Walter and Georgia (Jarvis) Kriel. Marjorie, a life-long Christian, was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wellston and later in Chandler since she was fifteen years old.

Marjorie was married to Franklin D. Burkett on Jan. 24, 1954. They had two children: Michael and Susan. Franklin died June 9, 1978. She married Buddy Cowden May 24, 1979. They had a wonderful married life together until Buddy's death Feb. 26, 2002.

Marjorie was raised on the Kriel family farms north of Wellston, originally at the confluence of the Deep Fork River and Bear Creek, and then later near Fallis. She attended Wellston Public Schools and later received a high school diploma. Early on in her first marriage she lived in Nebraska, New Mexico, etc. In the late 1950s and early 1960s she, with her husband, Franklin, owned and operated a restaurant, the City Cafe, in Wagner, Oklahoma. In the late 60s and early 70s they owned and operated a clothing store, Wellston Mercantile, and Burkett's furniture store in Wellston. She worked for the State of Oklahoma's Department of Human Services in Oklahoma City for 22 years and then the Oklahoma Health Care Authority for 3 years. She retired in 1999. She was a member of the Forum of Chandler, loved gardening, her yard and travel. Despite her eight month long battle with pancreatic cancer, she took a week-long trip to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, Mexico in March of this year with her relatives, Jim and Doris Lee.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Franklin; and second husband, Buddy.

She is survived by her son, Rev. Dr. Michael Burkett, his wife, Cathy, and son, Matthew of Guymon; her daughter, Susan Musser, her husband, Alan, and daughter Stacy of Edmond. Two sisters, Doris Lee, and her husband, Jim, and their children, Cindy and David, and their families of Tulsa; Deanna Evans and her husband, Marvin of Wellston and their children, Kristi, Lisa, and Dana, and their families. A number of relatives in the extended Kriel and Jarvis families as well as through the Burkett and Hanshew families by her marriage to her first husband, Franklin. Four step-children through her marriage to her beloved second husband, Buddy, Lee Ann Cogert of Blaine, Wash., Sharla Cowden of Evansville, Ind., Shannon Webb and husband Steve of Edmond and State Trooper Charles Cowden and wife, Kristie, and their children of Chandler. Also a number of friends made during her time living in Wellston, Chandler, and working for the State of Oklahoma.

Her sincerest wish in her final days, and indeed, during her whole life, was to go to heaven when she died and to see our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist in Chandler with the Rev. Sungsu Hwang officiating. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler, Oklahoma.

Alexis Flair Skalla-Winsworth
Alexis Flair Skalla-Winsworth, nine-month old infant, died Friday, Sept. 7, in Gulfport, Miss.

She was born to Sarah Elizabeth Cowen and Edwin Joseph Ramsey Skalla II on Dec. 7, 2006, in Enid.

Alexis is survived by her father, Eddie Skalla II of Enid; her mother, Sarah Cowen Winsworth and stepfather, James Winsworth of Gulfport, Miss.; paternal grandparents, Edwin and Pattie Skalla of Enid; maternal grandparents, Dale and Frances Cowen of Enid, Michael Throckmorton of Shawnee and James and Jackie Winsworth of Meeker; Godparents, Leonard and Rennee Buoy of Meeker and Michael and Elizabeth Heaton of Sparks; uncles, Larry Throckmorton, Robert Throckmorton, Jacob Cowen, Philip Cowen and wife, Marcia, Josh Skalla, Jonathan Winsworth and wife, Doni; aunts, Crystal Moody and husband, Bill, and Joanna Kirby and husband, Tim; cousins, Seirriah Throckmorton, Izzy Cowen, Blake and Cody Bower, Corbin Ritchie, Christan and Collin Skalla and Liam Winsworth.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at the Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Washburn officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid, under the direction of Anderson-Burris Funeral Home of Enid.

Alice Sanders Thrasher
Dale resident Alice Sanders Thrasher, 95, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at her home.

She was born May 17, 1912, in Parsons, Tenn., to W.E. and Martha (Garner) Thompson.

Alice had lived in Dale since she was 6 years old and had attended Dale Schools.

She was married Oct. 11, 1941 to Elmer Sanders. He preceded her in death April 19, 1986. She later married Homer Thrasher Sept. 10, 1987. He passed away July 31, 1992.

Alice was a homemaker and a member of Dale Church of Christ.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson Michael Warrenburg; one sister; and five brothers.

Survivors include her two Daughters, Dean Warrenburg of the home, and Rebecca and Mike Smith of Shawnee; grandchildren, Reid and Connie Warrenburg of Kiowa, Jim and Gwen Warrenburg of Tecumseh, Dwayne and Carey Smith of Harrah, and Jay and Carrie Smith of Newalla; nine great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Hattie Tanksley of Dale; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Dale Church of Christ with Dewayne Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Dale Cemetery.

John Dale Cardinal
Shawnee resident John Dale Cardinal died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at his home at the age of 64.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Walker Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Carolyn Higdon officiating.

Walker Funeral Service is directing arrangements.
