Arthur Eugene Evans
Shawnee resident Arthur Eugene Evans, 59, triumphed in his lengthy battle with cancer on Friday, June 29, he fought the good fight, ran the good race and is in Paradise with his Savior, Jesus Christ, this day.

A more than twenty year resident of Shawnee, "Art" or "Butch" (to his family and close friends) was born in Chelsea, Okla., Oct. 24, 1947. The eldest of four children born to parents Howard E. and Mary Ellen Evans, the family moved to Okmulgee, Okla. and Art graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1965.

Later that year, Art joined the U.S. Air Force, where he met a lovely Puerto Rican girl from Connecticut. They were married July 8, 1967. Three months shy of finishing his tour of duty in Viet Nam, Art and wife, Maria, welcomed the birth of daughter, Lynne.

Following military service, the young family settled in Hugo, Okla. where son, Jim was born and the family was complete.

Art began what was to be a successful career with Southwestern Bell Telephone. Beginning as a "helper" cable splicer, Art worked his way up in the company. Art retired in 2001 after 32 years with Southwestern Bell. During his career, the family lived in Hugo, Durant, Ardmore, Tulsa, Duncan, and finally, Shawnee.

Following his retirement from Southwestern Bell, Art had the privilege of working for a brief time at St. Gregory's University where he delighted in using his life experiences and gifting to minister to young people.

Art's retirement may have marked the end of a distinguished career, but almost immediately marked the beginning of his battle with cancer. The ensuing years brought periods of illness and pain, but also brought him into a profound sense of peace, acceptance, and faith. He faced the cancer with grace and humility, yet a strength of determination that did not stop until he had the chance to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary with Maria during a family gathering on June 2, and the birth of his newest grandson, Brady, on Wednesday, June 27.

He joins in Heaven his brother Roger and sister-in-law, Carol Evans, his nephew, Kevin Evans and his brother-in- law, Mike Allen. In addition, his maternal and paternal grandparents and many other loved ones whom he called "family", and all are no doubt rejoicing with him that he is finally home!
