Connie Ruth Wood
Connie Ruth Wood, 62, of Norman,
Oklahoma, died Friday, February 7, 2003, in
Norman, Oklahoma. Graveside Services will be
held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 11, 2003
at Green Hill Cemetery in Davis, Oklahoma,
with Rev. Richard Stephens officiating.
Pallbearers will be Danny Wood, Toby Thomas,
Jared Jansing, Danny Wood II, Taylor Everett,
Brandy Johnson and Boone Johnson. Honorary
Bearer will be Greg Jansing. Services are under
the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
Mrs. Wood was born July 12, 1940 in Woodland, Oklahoma,
to Alton and Vera Vivian Stephens Johnson. She graduated from
high school in Woodland, OK. Connie married Douglas “Woody”
Wood in 1957. They moved to Ratliff City, Oklahoma and came to
Norman in 1969 from Edmond. She was a member of Immanuel
Baptist Church in Norman.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her parents and
husband, Douglas “Woody” Wood. Survivors include a son, Danny
Wood and wife, Rhonda, of Norman; two daughters, Teresa Thomas
of Norman and Kellye West of Norman; two brothers, Terry Johnson
and wife, Carolyn, of Sulphur, OK and Steve Johnson and wife,
Becky, of Sulphur, OK; an aunt, Lula Schilling, of Davis, OK; and six
grandchildren, Andrea Wood, Bobbie Everett, Danny Wood II, Toby
Thomas, Jared Jansing and Jenny Jansing.

Bruce Harrison Hinson
Bruce Harrison Hinson died March 2,2003. He was born in Enid, OK on September 27, 1936 to Elizabeth Mildred Henninger and Dr. Bruce Ratliff Hinson. He graduated from Enid High School in 1954 and from Princeton cum laud in 1958 with studies in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He earned a MA at the University of Oklahoma and acquired hours toward a doctoral degree at the University of Texas at Austin.
Following graduation from Princeton, Bruce served three years active duty in the U.S. Navy serving as Gunnery Officer and Navigator aboard the USS PICKETT (AGR- 7), San Francisco, CA. and as Operations, Security and Senior Shore Patrol Officer, Stockton Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet, Stockton, CA. Returning to civilian life in 1961, Bruce continued to serve as a reserve officer for the next 33 years, ascending to the rank of Captain. His many billets included command, primarily in cryptology in units in several cities and at Annapolis, and at the National Security Agency, Ft. Meade, Maryland. From 1980 through 1995, Bruce was Area Coordinator (State of Oklahoma) for the United States Naval Academy Information Program directing 20 senior reserve officers in their performance as Academy representatives advising and evaluating prospective midshipmen.
Bruce's journalism career began in high school. He was reporter /photographer and assistant sports editor of the Enid Morning News and Enid Daily Eagle, and to be the news editor of the weekly newspaper, Enid Events, Enid, OK. During summers while at Princeton, he switched from newspapers to television. He was reporter, photographer and newscaster for KGEO-TV, Enid, OK (now KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City) and as reporter and photographer for WKY-TV, Oklahoma City, OK (now KFOR-TV). After completing active duty with the Navy in 1962, he returned to television and in positions of worked variously as reporter, photographer, newscaster, and assistant news director, at KOTV, Tulsa, OK.
In 1968 Bruce began a master program in the School of Journalism at the University of Oklahoma. Soon after a teaching position opened and the school asked Bruce to join the faculty. He was the first tenure-track member of the faculty hired specifically to teach broadcast news. He developed Journalism Ethic in 1972, which was one of the first stand-alone media ethics courses in the country. He also developed a sales and management curriculum in broadcasting and taught over 20 various courses including journalism history, law, ethics and philosophy. His additional teaching included courses at the University Center at Tulsa; in the U.S. Air Force Public Communications Course through the OU Department of Communication, at the OU College of Liberal Studies in their Master of Liberal Studies program, at the OU College of Continuing Education in the Economic Development Institute, and at the Defense Information School, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana
During his time at OU he filled several administrative/executive appointments. Bruce was appointed General Manager of KGOU-FM, OK. He was responsible for the complete rebuilding of the station and for its conversion from commercial to public radio. He served as Associate Director and Interim Director of the School of Journalism; Chair of the University of Oklahoma Faculty Senate and General Faculty; Chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee of Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and as a member of approximately fifty college and university-wide committees, councils and task forces such as the College of Arts and Sciences Executive Committee, the University of Oklahoma Centennial Commission, and the Campus Planning Council.
His professional service included coordinating the National Press Photographers Association Television Newsfilm Competition from 1968-1973 and continuing with the association as member and assignment editor until 1991. He participated in many Oklahoma Press Association photography workshops and held Oklahoma Publishing Company in-service training seminars on "Ethics" and "Disaster Coverage.
Bruce was judge of numerous contests including the Dallas Press Club, the American Heart Association nation Media Awards, the U.S. Air Force Annual Media Competition and the U.S. Army Interservice Photography Contest. Bruce co-authored with Vernon Stone Television Newsfilm Techniques (New York: Hastings House) 1974, which was adopted as a text by 22 colleges and universities and featured by U.S. Information Agency in a worldwide display program, "World Paperback Tour,"1975. His Exercises for Media Writing, second edition (Belmont, CA; Wadsworth Publishers) 1989 is still in publication.
Bruce's organizational memberships reflect his career passions: journalism, teaching and the navy. He was active in Radio Television News Directors Association; Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi; National Press Photographers Association, Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association(a founding member); the U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association and honor societies of Kappa Tau Alpha - the journalism scholastic honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi - the interdisciplinary scholastic honor society.
Through the years Bruce received significant awards and honors: The National "Mentor" Award for graduate education from the Journalism Education Association; the "Morris Berman NPP A Citation" for service from the National Press Photographers Association; the "Commandant's Award" for superior service from U.S. Naval Academy; the “Distinguished Service Citation” Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association; and the "Distinguished Alumni Award," of the Friends and Alumni of Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication (2001).
In retirement, Bruce continued to serve OU, his community and church. He was chief writer/editor, of "The Banner," a newsletter of the University of Oklahoma Retirees Association. He was president of the Sooner Nu-Voice Club, the statewide support group for laryngectomees. During his presidency he developed a network of members who made hospital visits to new laryngectomee patients and promoted cancer education programs, including tobacco use presentations to school groups. He was treasurer of the OU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and was a member and public relations coordinator of Tobacco Free Norman. A life-time Presbyterian, Bruce was an elder and clerk of the session at Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Bruce Hinson is survived by his wife, Doris Hinson; a son, Bruce Hinson and his wife, Karen of Phoenix, AZ; a son, Kirk Hinson and his wife, Kim of Salt Lake City, UT; a daughter, Debbie Humphrey of San Francisco, CA; stepsons, Greg McKinzey, Steve McKinzey and his wife, Karen, all of Norman and Phil McKinzey and his wife, Lee of Grapevine, TX; a brother, Brian Hinson of Enid; a cousin, Dr. Barton Carl and his wife, Bea, of Edmond; grandchildren, Linda Sevilla and Elizabeth Humphrey of San Francisco, CA, Mathew Hinson and Cara Peato of Phoenix AZ, Brandon Hinson of Salt Lake City, UT, Joe, Vanessa, Melissa, and Shelby McKinzey of Norman, and Ian and Gray McKinzey of Grapevine, Texas; a niece, Kate Jordan of Enid; nephews, Matt Hinson of Enid and Adam Hinson of Tulsa; and grandnephews, Peter Carl of Oklahoma City and John Carl of Burbank, CA.
Bruce's funeral will be Thursday, March 6,2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Presbyterian, Church, Norman, OK with Reverend James Burns Officiating. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.

Doris Loraine Hayes
Doris Loraine Hayes, 73, of Norman, Oklahoma died Friday,
March 28, 2003 in Norman. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30
a.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home
Chapel with Reverend Lavonn Brown officiating. Interment will
follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma. The
family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday,
March 31, 2003 at Havenbrook Funeral Home. Services are under
the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
Mrs. Hayes was born December 13, 1929, in Durant,
Oklahoma to Pate and Leona Witt Lifsey. She graduated from
Chickasha High School in 1947. She came to Norman in 1967 from
Venezuela. She attended Moore-Norman Vo-Tech. and later
graduated from Rose State College as a Registered Nurse. Doris
worked at Norman Regional Hospital in C. C. U. as a RN for eighteen
years. After retirement, she worked at the Postal Training Center as
a health nurse for four years. She was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Norman and the Norman Buckaroos Square Dance Club.
Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband, Jack
Austin Hayes, in December of 1967 and son Jack, Jr. She is survived
by two daughters, Vicki Hallman, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and
Becky Hazzard and husband, Jay, of Houston, Texas; three
grandchildren, Kendal Hallman, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Jenna
Hazzard and James Hazzard, both of Houston, Texas and cousin,
Truman Wilkerson, of Norman, Oklahoma.

Rick J. Alexander
Rick J. Alexander, 31, of El Reno,
Oklahoma died April 4, 2003 in El Reno.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Portland
Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma with Reverend Walter Mullican
officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel
Hill Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City.
Family visitation will be held from 7:00
p.m. until 9:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 8,
2003, at the Portland Avenue Baptist
Church, Family Life Center. Pallbearers are Steve Mitchell, Mike
Broomfield, Mike Robins, Tyrell Rodgers, David Ball and Marcus
Ball. Arrangements are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral
Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
Rick was born April 8, 1971 in Oklahoma City to Richard Lee
Alexander and Jeanne Allen Alexander. He grew up in the Yukon,
Oklahoma area and graduated from Yukon High School. He was a
trim carpenter and was well respected for his woodworking abilities
and craftsmanship. Rick moved to El Reno in 1999 from Oklahoma
City. He married Clarissa Schimmel on May 14, 2000 in Denton,
Texas. Rick’s hobbies included restoring Model T cars. He was
currently restoring a 1916 Model T. He was a member of the
National Hot Rod Association and the Heartland “ T ” ‘s Association
of Oklahoma City.
Rick was survived by his wife Clarissa, of the home; father,
Richard Alexander, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; mother, Jeanne
Allen Gaunce and husband, Charles, of El Paso, Texas; brother,
William Hornbaker and wife, Christina, of Tucson, Arizona; sister,
Brandi Hornbaker Simpson and husband, Matt of Ft Worth, Texas;
grandparents, Bennie and Wilma Allen of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
and grandmother, Delcie Alexander, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
special aunt, Debbie Allen Ball and husband, Mike, of Tuttle,
Oklahoma, and niece and nephew, Star and River Simpson.
Rick’s sense of humor and ability to make anyone laugh will
be sorely missed.

Lieutenant Colonel Carl Fredrick
Chandler passed away Wednesday,
April 2, 2003, in Norman, Okla.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00
A.M., Saturday, April 5, 2003 at First
Baptist Church in Norman, Oklahoma
with Minister John O’Dell officiating.
Interment will follow at 2:30 P.M.,
Saturday at the Oak Park Cemetery in
Chandler, Oklahoma. Pallbearers will
be James Cheng, Robert Hart, Greg
Hoag, John Maddox, Kenneth Chandler
Maddox, Stephen Morrow, Art Mould
and Adam Purvis. Honorary bearers
will be Harold Armstrong, Jack Hewitt, Karroll Higgins, Al
McCord, Colonel Richardson, Sam Tyo and the Men of Jerry
Hobbs Sunday School Class. Services are under the direction of
Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
He was born October 5, 1916, in Lincoln County, Okla., the fifth
son of Guy Franklin Chandler and Hazel Crawford Chandler.
After graduation from Wellston High School and Oklahoma A&M
University, Chandler was called to active duty in World War II,
serving with the Dixie Division. Chandler made seven beachhead
landings in the Pacific Theater.
During the Korean Conflict, Chandler served as a
psychological warfare officer. He completed his career at various
posts in the United States and Europe. In 1966, Chandler retired
after 26 years of service. After retiring, he worked for the U.S.
Postal Service until 1979. Chandler was an active member of First
Baptist Church of Norman, serving as a deacon and in other roles
for the church.
Chandler is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joy; his
daughters and their husbands, Candace and Robert Hart of Surfside
Beach, Texas, and Sharon and John Maddox of Ponca City, Okla.;
a niece and her husband, Belinda and Arthur Mould of Wichita,
Kan.; grandchildren and their spouses, Nancy and Gregory Hoag of
Wylie, Texas, Becky and Adam Purvis of Irving, Texas, Kimber
and Stephen Morrow of New Orleans, La., Kristin and James
Cheng of Rochester, N.Y., and Kenneth Chandler Maddox of
Weatherford, Okla., and his fiancée Kinsey Bills of Willard, Mo.,
Art and Erin Mould of Missouri City, Texas, and Shannon Mouldof
Norman, Okla. Chandler was preceded in death by his parents
and six brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to
Hospice by Loving Care, P.O. Box 1414, Noble, Okla.
