Bernice Valarie Peace

TAHLEQUAH -- Bernice Valarie (Jones) Peace was born on Nov. 17, 1906, in Protem, Mo., to James Thomas and Daisy Arbel (Owen) Jones. She passed away on Feb. 22, 2004, in Tahlequah.

Bernice moved to Oklahoma in 1920 and married Clyde Peace in 1925. She was a beautician, and was owner of Modern Beauty Shop for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Peace; her daughter, Hattie Mae King; a son, Dean Edward Peace; her sisters, Parale Hisle and Erna Wade; and her brothers, Perry Jones and Omer Jones.

Bernice is survived by her six grandchildren, Melba Pettit, Gerard Peace, Linda O'Seland, Patricia Bashore, Rick King and Terasa Zanghi; numerous great-grandchildren and several great, great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Reed-Culver Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, with burial following at Tahlequah City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joshua Massey, Tony O'Seland, Rick King and Gerard Peace.

George T. McGowin

TAHLEQUAH -- Graveside services for George T. McGowin will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Gideon Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

Pallbearers include Chris Adams, Kenny Sparks, Ray Harper, Arvin Lee McGowin, Gary McGowin and Tim Carter. Honorary pallbearers include Larry Dale Beavers, Isaac Blackman, Duane Trammel, Leon Graves and H.L. Pinson.

George T. McGowin passed from this life Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in Tahlequah at the age of 73. He was born April 10, 1931, in Wagoner County to Charley and Pearl (Blackwell) McGowin. George later married Ruthie Kelley. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

George was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Arlin Gene McGowin; a granddaughter, Aubrey Elaine McGowin; three brothers: Arvin, Jack and Lue McGowin; and two sisters: Eula Webster and Edna Boswell.

Surviving George are his three daughters, Beverly Ann Loyd, Tammie Denise Beavers and Debra Diane Brant; six sons, George Edward, Randall Lee, Burl Ray, Charlie, Loyd "L.D." Douglas and Marlin Dean McGowin; and two sisters, Katie Poston and Bertie Mondier.

Martha Marie Anthony

TAHLEQUAH -- Memorial services for Martha Marie Anthony, age 59, of Tahlequah will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 10, 2004, at Hart Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Gary Carey officiating.

Martha Marie Anthony was born to Thorn and Ella (Carey) Catron on Dec. 30, 1944, in Tahlequah, and passed from this life on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in Stilwell.

Martha was raised and spent most of her adult life in the Tahlequah area. When Martha wasn't busy working as a home health provider, she enjoyed making beautiful quilts. Music was a favorite pastime, and she really enjoyed country and gospel music. Martha had a ready smile and a wonderful sense of humor, which she shared with all her family and friends. On July 24, 1986, Martha married Ersel Anthony in Tahlequah. They enjoyed 18 years together. Martha was always happiest when spending time with her family and friends talking. She was baptized and a member of Bushy Mountain Baptist Church.

Her parents, her stepmother, Freda, and her grandparents precede Martha in death.

Martha is survived by her loving husband, Ersel Anthony of the home; three children, Angela Findley of Tahlequah, Jessie Leply of Tulsa, and Justin Sexton of Muskogee; one sister, Margaret Moss of Okmulgee; three brothers, Paul Catron and wife Lyn of Arkansas, Frank Catron and wife Carolyn of Okay, and Jesse Catron and wife Carol of Muskogee; two half-brothers, "Lucky" Robin Catron and wife Kelly of Muskogee, and Joe Catron also of Muskogee; two half-sisters, Peggy and Cindy Catron, all of Muskogee; eight grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, stepbrothers, and sisters; as well as a host of friends and loved ones.

Herb Davis

TAHLEQUAH -- Services for Herb Davis were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Raeberne Squyres and Rev. Glen Rowan officiating. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery in Hulbert under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.

Casket bearers were Herb's grandchildren, Tracy Bibb, Michelle Couch, Kevin Walls, Presley Walls, Matthew Walls, Sheila Smith, Loretta Gower, Mac Davis and Scott Gower.

Herb Davis was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Hulbert to Charlie Mack and Alvira Anne (Montgomery) Davis. He passed from this life Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in Tahlequah at the age of 81 years. Herb was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Walls; a sister, Dollie Morrison; and four brothers, Earnest, Logan, George and Gunter Davis.

Herb is survived by two sons, Herbert M. Davis and wife Bobbie, and John Walls and wife Ronnie; two daughters, Betty Smith and Bernice Bibb; three sisters, Thelma Patterson, Lora Lee and her husband Son, and Elnora Wynn; as well as eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great, great-grandchildren.

Charles William Joice

PEGGS -- Services for Charles William Joice, 71, will be held on 2 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2004, at the Peggs Community Church, with the Reverends Michael Parish of Peggs Community Church and Everett Morris of Pentecostal Church of God of Panama officiating. Internment will follow at New Home Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Joice will be Pete Milliron, Jay Paul Milliron, Jack Eagles, Dwight Miller, Bill Joice and Junior Joice. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Jenkins, Bob Hutchinson and Bill Flowers.

Charles was born one of five children on Oct. 28, 1932, in Jennings, to Bill Brady and Geneva (Yoder) Joice, and passed away at his home on March 1, 2004. Charles attended school at Shady Grove and Chilocco Indian School. He then began his career as a construction worker, which he continued until his retirement.

On April of 1952, Charles married Betty Morris in Yuma, Ariz. To this union, three children were born. Charles served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953-55, until he was honorably discharged.

Charles loved life and lived it to the fullest. His many hobbies included a good western, especially anything that featured John Wayne. There was nothing better than a hunting trip, which was an excuse to go camping. He loved to trade merchandise, and was always aware of the value people placed in their possessions. Of all the things that made him happy, the time he spent with his children and his grandchildren was his greatest joy. He adored them, and they will miss him dearly. Charles attended the Peggs Community Church.

Charles is preceded in death by both of his beloved parents; his stepmother, Rena Harris; a brother, James Joice; a sister, Baby Girl Joice; a stepbrother, Ben Joice; and a stepsister, Vina Mae Englebright.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory three children, Tommy and Pam Joice, Shirley and Rex Hendrickson and Nancy and Eugene Hill, all of Peggs; six very special grandchildren, Jerimy and Shelly Joice of Peggs, Lanecia and Adam Thomas of Wagoner, Sarah Hendrickson of Peggs, Kim and Scott McCullah of Natura, Brandon Hill of Stilwell, and Amanda Hill of Peggs; six adored great-grandchildren, Madilyn and Tyler Joice of Peggs, Tyson Thomas of Wagoner, Elizabeth Hendrickson of Peggs, and Jaxson and Joseph McCullah of Natura; one brother, John and Imogene Joice of Peggs; one sister, Mary Hutchinson and husband Bob of Peggs; a stepsister, Ellen Sweeton of Hackett, Ark; many nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as a host of friends and loved ones.

Claudia Selma Jones

TAHLEQUAH -- Services for Claudia Selma Moyer Jones, 85, of Tahlequah, will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 20, 2004, in the Church of the Nazarene, and at 3 p.m. at the funeral home chapel in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Oklahoma City, with Rev. Natalie Williams Ford and Rev. Don Nichols officiating. Interment is under the care of Green Country Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

Pallbearers are grandsons of Mrs. Jones: Koby Jones, Colin Jones, Brad Williams, Rodney Colbert, Brian Cobb and Chris Striech.

Claudia Selma Jones was born to Harry and Lela (Rollins) Moyer on Oct. 10, 1918, in Edmond. She passed peacefully from this life on March 17, 2004, in Tahlequah.

Claudia was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church. She also was a member of the Bethany First Church of the Nazarene Cathedral Choir for 30 years.

Claudia graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Bethany Peniel College, now Southern Nazarene University. She was a teacher for over 40 years. She began her career at Spring Valley School in Kiowa County in 1940, and retired in 1980 from Putnam City. She began her career in a one-room school and, at one time, taught all 12 grades.

Claudia was an avid bowler, winning many tournaments and prizes in Oklahoma City. She was a popular soloist in the Oklahoma City area for many years. Claudia enjoyed cooking and was an excellent seamstress. She served as a 4-H leader, directed several school operettas and was named Teacher of The Year in 1972 from Putnam City Intermediate. She was a member of the Oklahoma and National Education Association and Kappa Kappa Iota teacher's sorority. She was also an active member of the Oklahoma City Chapter of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. In 1955, she was the guest entertainment at the DAV National Convention.

Claudia is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Earl Moyer; and two sisters, Frances Moyer and Velma Sloan.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Koby of Tahlequah; two children, Pam Williams and husband Larry of Tahlequah; and John Jones and wife Susan of Shorewood, Minn.; a sister, Verta Bugh of Pasadena, Calif.; two brothers, Wayne Moyer and wife Charla of Springdale, Ark., and Brance Moyer and wife Connie of Baytown, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Odell Moyer of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Eloise Bullinger and Mildred Griffeth, both of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as many wonderful friends and loved ones.

The family is deeply indebted to Carter Hospice in Tahlequah. They ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to this organization or the Alzheimer's Association in Claudia's name.
