Helen Louise (Casas) Jamison

TAHLEQUAH -- Services for Helen Jamison will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 19, 2004, at Reed-Culver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tom Bullock officiating. Burial will follow at Tahlequah City Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

Helen Louise (Casas) Jamison was born July 28, 1937, to Ygnacio Casas and Agnes (Baker) Casas in Tulsa, and passed from this life on March 16, 2004, in Tahlequah, at the age of 66.

Helen was a homemaker and is survived by her husband, Huey Jamison of the home; two sons, Jesse Jamison and wife Beverly, and Perry Jamison and wife Kathy; her mother, Agnes Casas; one brother, Billy Ray Casas; and five grandchildren, Loren, Andy, Matthew, Amy and August.

Mary Francis Carter

STILWELL -- Services for Mary Francis Carter, 103, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 19, 2004, at Hart Memorial Chapel in Stilwell, with Rev. Audie Vaughan officiating. Interment will follow at Stilwell City Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.

Mary Francis Carter, daughter of John L. White and Laura (Ramey) White, was born June 29, 1900, in Indian Territory, and passed away March 14, 2004, at her home in Stilwell at the age of 103 years, 8 months and 15 days.

A lifelong resident of the Stilwell area, Mary married Stermie P. "S.P." Carter in 1916 and to this union eight children were born. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who enjoyed her role as a homemaker, caring for the needs of her family. Mary was a member of Whitmire Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, S.P. Carter; two sons, Wilburn Carter and Fleet H. Carter; two brothers and three sisters; and one grandson, Mike Carter.

Mary leaves to mourn her passing three sons, Drannon Carter and wife Hildegarde of Tahlequah, Lloyd King Carter and wife Martha of Tulsa, and Forest Owen Carter and wife Euna Fern of Stilwell; three daughters, Renie Guinn of Cookson, Nadine Ketcher and husband Dr. Austin Ketcher of Tahlequah, and Madeline Price of Stilwell; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 20 great great-grandchildren; a special friend an caregiver, Dee Unger of Stilwell; and a host of friends and loved ones.

Barbara A. Welch

TAHLEQUAH -- Services for Barbara A. Welch, 62, of Hulbert will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 20, 2004, in the Green Country Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Sam Keener officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Hulbert, under the care of Green Country Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Shawn Moore, William Moore, Christi Moore, Micah Moore, Joshua Moore, Brandy Medrana, Jackie York and Vanessa Corley. Honorary Pall bearers are Kyle Moore, Brian Coon, Jackson Coon, Cameron Coon, Jerod Keys, Johnathan Keys, Joseph Keys and Brent Johnson.

Barbara was born June 21, 1943, in the good town of Tahlequah, and was raised in Cherokee County. She was the daughter of D.W. Walls and Christine Welch. She passed from this life on March 16, 2004, in Tulsa.

Barbara enjoyed gardening and Bible study. She was Mother Of The Year for 46 years in a row. She loved caring for her family and being a servant and and witness for God every day of her life.

Barbara was preceded in death by a son, Clifton Moore; and a granddaughter, Sasha Moore.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth whom she married on July 17, 1982; her children Shawn Moore and his wife Melanie, William Moore and his wife Rhonda, Jackie York and her husband John, all of Lost City, and Christi Moore of Miami, and Tammy and Da-Linda Hart, both of Tulsa; 11 grandchildren, Kyle Moore, Brandy Medrana, Kaca Coon, Jessica Dallas, Venessa Corley Marice Moore, Joshua Moore, Micah Moore, Mandy Moore, L.J. York and Sam York; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones.

Edna L. Contardi

TAHLEQUAH -- Edna L. Contardi of Cary, N.C., died quietly Tuesday, March 23, 2004. She lived in Tahlequah for 10 years and was a member of St. Basil's Episcopal Church.

Edna Contardi's Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, at St. Basil's Episcopal Church, 814 N. Vinita Ave., in Tahlequah.

In Fort Worth, Texas, she began her life as Edna Leslie Jones, born on Oct. 5, 1915. She grew up in New York, graduating from Flushing High School. She came of age in the Great Depression, worked as a high-accuracy typist and studied nursing. She met a young chemistry professor Harold Abbott and spent the next 20 years as a faculty wife and mother of four in Nacogdoches, Texas. In her early forties, she entered college and at the end of two and a half years, she graduated with honors in 1959, with a bachelor of arts degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas.

During a distinguished career of over 20 years, Edna taught English and drama to teenagers and young adults, first at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, and then Irving High School in EI Paso, Texas. She met Armando Contardi and continued her English studies at the University of Wyoming, earning a master's degree in 1965, and then became an English instructor at Sheridan Junior College, Sheridan, Wyo.; then moving on to Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala.,; Methodist College, Fayetteville, N.C.; Rogers State University, Claremore; and culminated her teaching career at Kerr-Vance Academy, Henderson, N.C.

At Kerr-Vance Academy she and her students were the winners of a National Writing Contest sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken. In 1970, Methodist College students Charles G. Hartman, James T. Gwyn, and Stephen A. Magnotta admired Edna's devotion, and monumental contribution to the teaching, of English and honored her by establishing the Edna L. Contardi English Award, an honorarium presented each year to the graduating English major with the highest grade point average in English. She will be long remembered by her admiring students she so lavishly engaged in the study of the English language and literature.

In her retirement years she lived in Tahlequah, playing bridge - a game her father taught her as a girl and which she enjoyed with friends and family throughout her life. She then moved to Oxford, N.C. Suffering from several strokes, she spent her last days at Carey Rehabilitation Center visited by loving family and friends.

Throughout her life, Edna's dynamic personality illustrated her energy, courage, tenacity, and loving nature which she so generously shared with her loved ones. She is survived by her four children: Dr. Virginia Anderson of Baltimore, Md., Mr. John Abbott of New Orleans, La., Deborah Rader, NBCT, of Tahlequah, and Mr. David Abbott of Apex, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, Randy Johnson, Sherry Freeman, Billy Clarkson, John Abbott, Ashley Abbott, Lt. Col. Ace Shrum (USAF), Shane Rader, Melody Rader Reed, Matthew Rader, Ben Abbott and Jessica Abbott; and seven great-grandchildren, Devin Shrum, Trevor Reed, Emma Reed, Madison Freeman, Madelyne Abbott, Parker Abbott and Madeline Sage Rader.

In lieu of a funeral and flowers, the family suggests personal prayers and a contribution to the Edna L. Contardi English Award at Methodist College or the Edna L. Contardi Library Collection Memorial Fund. John Gates

John Gates was born on Nov. 20, 1919 to Charlie and Betty (Langston) Gatesin Braggs, Okla. He passed from this life on April 6, 2004, in Muskogee, Okla., at the age of 84 years.

John grew up between Braggs and Tahlequah. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He farmed and raised cattle.

John worked at Muskogee Iron Works for 35 years. He married Maggie Guinn on Nov. 22, 1945, and from this union four children were born: T.J. Stand, Johnny Ray Gates, Joe Gates and Bonnie Moody.

Maggie preceded John in death. He later married Elva Sparks, who passed away in 2003. John was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Tom, Lewis, Bill and Jack Gates; and one sister, Helen Young.

He is survived by his children, and stepchildren, Mary Jane Clogston, Gail Dotson, Raymond Sparks, Jimmy Sparks, Glenn Sparks and Paul Sparks; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, along with many other relatives, loved ones and friends.

Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at Greenleaf Cemetery in Cherokee County under the direction of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah with Rev Don Landers officiating.

Pallbearers will include, Dean Moody, John Gates, Chebon Tiger, Brian Cole Ames, Brian Harris and Cody Stand.

Michael George Gilmore

TAHLEQUAH -- Graveside services for Michael George Gilmore, will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, 2004, officiated by Jerry Cole. Services are under the direction of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

Michael George Gilmore was born July 4, 1957, in Tulsa to Tom and Virginia (Roberts) Gilmore. He passed away April 5, 2004, in Tahlequah, at the age of 46 years, 9 months and 1 day.

Michael grew up in Tulsa and moved to Moodys to live with his mother and step-dad in the early 1970s. Michael married Nancy Hawkins on June 23, 1979.

Michael was preceded in death by his dad, Tom Gilmore; his Grandma Gilmore; his brother, Richard Gilmore; his grandparents Arlis and Verla Cupples; and father-in-law, Calvin Hawkins.

Michael leaves behind his wife Nancy of the home; daughter Alicia Hawkins and fiancé Chad Tinsley of Welling; son Joshua Gilmore and fiancé Kendra Golden of the home; his mother Virginia Roberts and step-dad Evert Roberts of Moodys; his mother-in-law Joan Sixkiller and husband Taylor of Bullhollow; three sisters-in-law, Bette Scuggins and husband John of Tahlequah, Cathy Byers and husband Russell of Tahlequah, and Carol Sapp and husband Henry of Bullhollow; and one brother-in-law, Jerry Hawkins and wife Mary of Avon Park, Fla., several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and loved ones.
