HOWARD F. MANN

COMMERCE, Okla. -- Howard F. Mann, 105, a former Tyrone, Okla. resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at the Allgood Residential Home in Commerce after a sudden illness.

He was born Dec. 14, 1894, to Calvin P. and Jessie (VanWormer) Mann in Craig, Mo.

He married Dora Carson Sept. 17, 1919, in Liberal. She died April 17, 1982.

He was educated in Tyrone and spent most of his life in the area. He worked as a mechanic at the Ford garage in Tyrone for 16 years. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier from 1935 to 1964, when he retired at the age of 70.

He went to Guymon April 25, 1918, where he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I. He served until May 17, 1919. He was awarded a purple heart for bravery and the French Legion of Honor award.

He was a member of the Floyd L. Perry American Legion Post, the Moore-McCoy Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 2688, and the First Baptist Church, all in Miami.

Survivors include one son, Warren Mann of DeSoto; one daughter, Marie Payton, Miami; one sister, Katie Ballard, Abilene, Texas; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, H.F. Mann Jr., in August of 1957.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Baptist Church in Tyrone with the Revs. Karl Heil and Jim Maynard presiding.

Services are under the direction of the Roberts Bros. Funeral Home in Hooker, Okla.

JAMES R. PEMBERTON

FLORIS, Okla. -- James Roy Pemberton, 95, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver, Okla.

He was born June 5, 1904, to George and May (Snider) Pemberton in Toronto, Mo.

He was a farmer and rancher all of his life.

He was a member of the Bethel Church of God for over 50 years. He was a member of the Masons, a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a member of the I.O.O.F.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby, of the family home in Floris; two sons, Jimmy Pemberton, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Stanley Pemberton, Kingwood, Texas; one grandchild, one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethel Church of God with the Rev. Stanley Lehnert presiding. Burial will follow at the Floris Cemetery in Floris, under the direction of Clark Funeral Service in Beaver, Okla.

LONNIE C. YORK

PERRY, Okla. -- Lonnie C. York, 52, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

He was born Oct. 6, 1947, to Lonnie Eugene and Evelyn Grace (McCormick) York in Jacksonville, Fla.

He graduated from Woodward, Okla. High School and then from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa in 1969 and from Northwestern State College in Alva in 1973.

He was a driver's education teacher. He coached football, baseball and track. He was a member of the Oklahoma Coaches Association.

Survivors include three sons, Monte York and wife, Barbi, Yukon, Okla., Brett York and fiancee, Amanda Hall, Norman, Okla., and Clint York, Perry, Okla.; two sisters, Dian Hysell and husband, Terry, Canton, Okla., and Penny Smith and husband, Mike, Sayre, Okla.; two granddaughters, Jordan and Mackenzie York, Yukon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Perry, Okla., with the Rev. Lynn Scott presiding. Burial will follow at the Lone Oak Cemetery in Sayre, Okla.

The family suggests memorials to the "Heart of a Champion" scholarship fund at Exchange Bank and Trust Co., P.O. Box 797, Perry, OK 73077.

Scholarships provided through the "Heart of a Champion" fund will be given to male and female senior athletes at Perry High School.

OLEN LILE GREGG

BEAVER, Okla. -- Olen Lile Gregg, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver.

He was born July 27, 1916, to J.B. and Mary Beth (Lile) Gregg in Beaver.

He married Goldie Brown Feb. 25, 1936, in Beaver. She died Oct. 8, 1999.

He was a carpenter all of his life.

Survivors include three daughters, Myrna Calhoon, Tulsa, Okla., Patsy McDaniel, Beaver, and Janice Goetzinger, Beaver; one brother, Gale Gregg, Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Uldean Lindquist, Longview, Wash.; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Pioneer Cemetery in Beaver. Burial will follow at the Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Clark Funeral Service in Beaver.

GLENN GROUNDS

GUYMON, Okla. -- Glenn Grounds, 79, former Hooker, Okla. resident, died Jan. 4, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon.

He was born March 13, 1920, to Charles D. and Lillie May (Seawright) Grounds.

He married Vera Bertha Oxley on Jan. 1, 1950. She died Feb. 7, 1991.

He moved to Puyallup, Wash. in 1937, where he joined the CCC's and the National Guard.

He served overseas for six years in the United States Army during World War II. He moved back to Hooker, after returning from the war, with his parents and brother, Denver. He worked at various jobs during the following years including farming.

He worked as a butcher at several places, including Shorty Burdge's Grocery Store and Flynt Grocery store in Hooker. He and his wife owned and operated the 54 diner in Hooker.

He had surgery which left him paralyzed from the waist down. For many years he worked very hard, trying to walk again but to no avail.

He loved to repeat funny stories and maintained a good sense of humor through all the pain and trials he had to endure.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Hooker.

Survivors include one son, Larry Glenn Grounds and wife, Thyra, Guymon; two daughters, Rhonda Kay Critcher and husband, Bob, and Carolyn Lee Keith and husband, Floyd, all of Hooker; one brother, D. J. Grounds and wife, Donna Jean, Puyallup; two sisters, Imogene Hill and husband, Irving, Hooker, and Marvella Massie and husband, Art, Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren, David Lynn Grounds, Joshua Glenn Grounds, Robert Critcher, Charles Critcher, Ryan Joseph Critcher, Jennifer Marie Keith and Floyd Eric Keith; and great-granddaughter, Savannah Gabreal Critcher.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beula Thrall; and brother, Denver Grounds.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Hooker with the Revs. Neville Buchanan and Lloyd Riddles presiding. Burial will follow at the Hooker Cemetery in Hooker with John Maynard presiding.

The family suggests memorials to the Hooker Cemetery Fund in care of the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.

DAVID CRUZ

MOORE, Okla. -- David Cruz, 75, a former Ulysses, Kansas resident, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in Moore.

He was born June 3, 1924, to Lucas Cruz and Beneranda Martinez in Paemonte, N.M.

He married Connie Garcia Nov. 18, 1948, in Clayton, N.M. She died July 20, 1991.

He moved to Moore from the Ulysses and Satanta area four years ago.

He had worked as a machine operator for the Santa Fe Railroad and the Kansas Department of Transportation. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Moore.

Survivors include three sons, Alex Cruz and wife, Milda, Ulysses, Toby Cruz and wife, Cindy, Moore, and Jo Jo Cruz and wife, Trish, Fayetteville, Ark.; two daughters, Irene (Cruz) Heger, Springdale, Ark., and Sylvia Ward and husband, Hershel, Weatherford, Okla.; one brother, Bill Cruz, Hugoton; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton with the Rev. Emil Dinkel presiding. A VFW burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton.

Services are under the direction of Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

LYDIA ELLEN CHRISTIE

BEAVER, Okla. -- Lydia Ellen Christie, 95, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver.

She was born May 27, 1094, to Bruce and Loretta (Plain) Parker in No Man's Land.

She married Ira Lee Christie. He died in June 1960.

She attended school in Elmwood, Okla., through the eighth grade. She was a cook and a dressmaker all of her life.

Survivors include one brother, Francis M. Parker, Liberal; and a host of other relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her twin children.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Clark Funeral Service Chapel in Beaver, with Bobby Howard presiding. Burial will follow at the Pioneer Cemetery in Beaver County.

Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Service in Beaver.

VERNON RAY BAKER

BEAVER, Okla. -- Vernon Ray Baker, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at the Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver.

He was born Jan. 5, 1905, to Job and Nancy (Wright) Baker in Oklahoma Territory.

He married Vera Hull Nov. 13, 1935, in Beaver. She died July 28, 1980.

He was a farmer and rancher in eastern Beaver County, Okla., all of his life.

Survivors include two sisters, Eunice Pope, Knowles, Okla., and Millie Belle Priest, Gate, Okla.; three nieces, Mary Brewer and Eva Miller, both of Beaver, and Betty Lou Wendel, Belmond, Iowa; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Beaver Church of the Nazarene in Beaver, with the Revs. Wes Peterman and Bobby Howard presiding.

Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Clearlake, Okla., under the direction of Clark Funeral Service in Beaver.
