WAYNE L. THOMPSON

HOOKER, Okla. -- Wayne L. Thompson, 84, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Dunaway Manor in Guymon, Okla.

He was born April 23, 1917, to Kay L. and Jewell Teel Thompson at the family home outside of Hooker.

He attended school in Hooker, graduating there with the class of 1935. His father was a member of the first graduating class of Hooker High School in 1909 and his grandfather, F.W. Thompson, was a member of the school board when the high school building was constructed in 1919.

He attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Okla., where he graduated with the class of 1939.

He married Margaret Bringle in August 1941, in Yuma, Ariz. She died in 1984.

He and his wife lived all their married life in Hooker, except for four years that they lived in San Diego, Calif.

He worked at Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego during World War II, where he built B-24 planes.

He married Dorothy (Hanson) Stevenson in August 1986. She survives.

He worked in the Hooker area in construction for 20 years. He helped in the construction of several commercial buildings in the area including the Hooker City Hall, Federal Land Bank, and the Presbyterian Church in Guymon. He also helped with the construction of several Oklahoma schools in Straight, Tyrone, Turpin, Texhoma, Adams and Hooker.

He built several homes and remodeled others. He was injured in 1964 while working on the Hooker High School and gave up the construction business for farming. He began farming irrigated and dry land acreage until his retirement in 1990.

He was an active member of the Hooker United Methodist Church where he had attended since childhood. He was elected to the administrative board in 1947, and had served in most of the offices of the church. He was named Mr. Methodist in 1998.

He was elected to the board of trustees of Dunaway Manor Nursing Home in 1981, when it was given to the Methodist Conference. He served as president of the board for 10 years and was a member of the executive committee.

He served on the board of the Hooker Equity Cooperative for 15 years, acting as chairman of the board for 12 years. He was a member of the Hooker Lions Club for 32 years and had served in all official positions.

He was PTA president when the evergreen trees were planted on the north side of the elementary school playground.

He kept statistics during games for years to keep involved in sports, which he was prevented from playing due to a childhood illness. He was a member of the Hooker Booster Club and supported Hooker sports for many years.

Other survivors include two daughters, Kay Darnell and husband, Ken, Guymon, and Elaine Ridge and husband, Danny, Hooker; one sister, Jean Griffin, Kansas City; one step-daughter, Janet Haley and husband, Bill, St. Simon's Island, Ga.; three step-sons, Don Stevenson and wife, Barbara, Demin Springs, La., James Stevenson and wife, Dinah, Shreveport, La., and Joe Stevenson and wife, Lisa, Zachary, La.; three grandchildren, Kim Al-Amoudi and husband, Hassan, Guymon, Jarrod Ridge and wife, Jodi, Minden, Neb., and Jason Ridge, Stillwater, Okla.; five great-grandchildren, Addie, Noah and Mabel Ridge, and Emily and Adam El-Amoudi; eight step-grandchildren, Brian Stevenson, Ginger Stevenson, Michael Stevenson, John Stevenson, Ashley Haley, Anna Haley, Courtney Stevenson and Erin Stevenson.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Atherton; and one brother, Dale Thompson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hooker, with the Rev. Kim Domnick presiding.

Burial will follow at the Hooker Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, or the Church Parlor, in care of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.

RUTH SCHOOLEY

TYRONE, Okla. -- Maretta Ruth (Kagarice) Schooley, 85, Tyrone, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in Elk City, Okla.

She was born Jan. 23, 1916, to Isaac and Grace Verena (Smith) Kagarice near Hutchinson in Reno County.

She married Harold Rudolph Schooley Feb. 22, 1940, in Tyrone. He survives.

She and her family moved to rural Stevens County and then to Hugoton in 1925.

She graduated from Hugoton High School and attended Emporia State Teachers College.

She taught in the rural Stevens County schools of Little Union. Lafayette, Fairview and Campaign.

She and her husband lived on a farm south of Hugoton before moving to a farm northwest of Tyrone in 1944. They lived there until 1998, when they moved to Elk City.

She was a member of PTA and Home Demonstration Club. She also worked with the local and county 4-H Clubs.

She was a member of the Tyrone Baptist Church, where she often served as a Sunday school teacher.

Other survivors include two sons, Neal Schooley and wife, Shirley, Birmingham, Ala., and Jim Schooley and wife, Elaine, Liberal; one daughter, Lynn Kennemer and husband, Bob, Elk City; one brother, Willard Kagarice and wife, June, Lancaster, Calif.; one sister, Opal Nigh and husband, Edson, Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters-in-law, Fannie Kagarice, Vida Lyles and Sylvia Rhoades; ten grandchildren, David Schooley, Alan Schooley, Angela Washington, Vaughn Kennemer, Dale Kennemer, Carrie Kennemer, Brian Schooley, Karon Schooley, Sean Schooley and Jessica Schooley; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Ted and Ocar; and one sister, Irene.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Tyrone Baptist Church in Tyrone.

Burial will be at the Tyrone Cemetery in Tyrone.

Memorials are suggested to either the Tyrone High School library or to the Olive Warner Public Library in Hooker, Okla., both in care of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.

MARYBYRD VILLINES

SHAWNEE, Okla. -- Marybyrd Villines, 90, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at the Shawnee local nursing home.

She was born Oct. 30, 1910, to Samuel and Sarah Jane (Dean) Webster in Broken Arrow, Okla.

She married E.S. "Jack" Villines May 3, 1941, in Dallas. He died May 29, 1985.

She graduated from Brownsville High School in Brownsville, Texas.

She was the first official secretary of the superintendent of schools in Brownsville. She was also employed as the secretary to the president at Brownsville College and worked for Mid-Continent and Standard Oil, and Coates Oil and Acid Engineers.

She was a 50-year member and Past Matron of the Lakin Chapter No. 244 of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was a Red Cross gray lady and a leader of Girl Scout Troop White Fair. She was the secretary of the Federated Womans Club, the secretary of Civil Air Patrol and a member of the golf club, all in Liberal.

She founded the 11-1 Bridge Club in Lakin.

Survivors include two grandsons, Jack Robin Schawo, Shawnee, and Derrick Keith Schawo, Tacoma, Wash.; one granddaughter, Nicole L. Schawo Denny, Shawnee; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sara Maree Schawo Aug. 25, 1992; two sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Shawnee with the Father Percy Jerkins presiding.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell, Okla.

Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel in Shawnee is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN J. OLSEN

TURPIN, Okla. -- John Junior Olsen, 76, Turpin, Okla., died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Nov. 22, 1924 to John and Leona Marie (Dougan) Olsen in Rozel.

He married Doris E. Scheideman June 21, 1946 in Larned. She died Oct. 22, 1970.

He married Doris G. Welch Gates Dec. 16, 1976, in Northglenn, Colo. She survives.

He graduated from high school at Burdett and entered the U.S. Army.

He was a veteran of World War II, in which he served two enlistments.

Upon retiring from the Army, he began a long time career in construction as a carpenter. He worked in Larned and Wichita before moving to Liberal in 1958, where he started John Olsen Construction Company, which he operated until moving to Colorado in 1971.

He had lived in Northglenn and Fort Morgan, Colo., where he retired in 1984.

He moved to Turpin in 1993.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0022 in Northglenn and a life member of the VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166 and Elks Lodge No. 1947, both in Liberal. He was also a member of Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 646, both in Great Bend.

Other survivors include three sons, Bruce Olsen and wife, Nancy, Littleton, Colo., Roger Gates and wife, Debbie, Seneca, Mo., and Richard Hays and wife, Maxine, Turpin; three daughters, Nellie Brown, Alva, Okla., Lois Hal and husband, Jim, Richland, Wash., and Major Norene Olsen, Jesup, Ga.; one sister, Esther Danford, Westminster, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miller Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. Phil Shull presiding.

Burial with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard will be at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Saturday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

DORALEEN WILSON

HOOKER, Okla. -- Doraleen Wilson, 80, a longtime Hooker resident, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Guymon.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gospel of Grace Church in Hooker with Pastor Tim Elsner presiding.

Burial will be at the Hooker Cemetery under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker.

MERREL KUYKENDALL

TURPIN, Okla. -- Merrel Kuykendall, 89, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his home in Turpin.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary in Liberal.
