BESSIE IRENE HERALD

Bessie Irene Herald, 96, lifelong Hooker, Okla. resident passed away Thursday morning, Dec. 11, 2003, at the Dunaway Manor in Guymon, Okla.

The daughter of Daniel Christian and Bertha Ellen (Fouty) Hampsten, Bessie was born on April 20, 1907, northwest of Hooker, on land that her parents homesteaded in 1905.

As a child she attended Lemon school, which was one-half mile east of the home. She, along with her five brothers and four sisters would have to walk to school at times, even during unpleasant weather. Shortly after Bessie finished classes at the Lemon school, her parents bought a home in town and she attended Hooker High School. During her freshman year, she enrolled in Agriculture and was involved in the first landscaping of the school yard.

Bessie and Roy Arthur Herald were united in marriage on June 21, 1925, at Hooker.

They had first met in the summer of 1917, when the Edward Herald family came to Texas County. For her Christmas present in 1922, Roy gave Bessie a gold band which she has worn for 81 years. In January 1926, they bought a quarter of land six miles north and four miles west of Hooker. They farmed crook neck maize, broomcorn and wheat. During this time, three children were born, Ernest in 1926, Evelyn in 1929 and Veda in 1934. In 1944, they purchased a farmhome on 320 acres three miles north and one west of Hooker. There they farmed mostly wheat and raised registered shorthorn milking cattle. In 1947, their second son, Keith was born and 13 months later their third son, Doyle was born.

As well as being a farmer's wife, Bessie loved using her hands to sew, quilt, garden vegetables, fruits and flowers.

In 1969, Roy and Bessie built a home in Hooker and she spent countless hours landscaping and cultivating her yard, garden and flower beds. With this talent, she has received many awards and ribbons through her entries in the Texas County Fair, of which she was very proud. Another very proud moment in her life was in 1991 when she was named Pioneer Queen.

In addition to her family and the land on which she was raised, Bessie had an immense love for the Lord. Bessie's parents and two other pioneer families that had worshipped together in Illinois, came together in 1913 and met as the church of Christ. They worshipped in several different locations until 1941, when part of the present Church of Christ was moved to its current location. Bessie was a devoted member of the church and enjoyed teaching Sunday school. In everything she has done, she glorified God and taught her family to do the same.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy, on Sept. 13, 1995, her parents, five brothers, Roy, Cecil, Floyd, Lester and Otis Hampsten, three sisters, Essie Hoobler, Stella Griffin and Sadie Nash and one son-in-law, Ernest Witzke.
