Velma Abernathy

Velma Abernathy was born Oct. 30, 1910 at Carlsbad, New Mexico. She was the daughter of the late Charles O. and Lilly (Rogers) Abernathy. She died Nov. 23, 2003 in Altus.

Velma grew in the Ozark Community where she graduated from Ozark High School. She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Altus where she taught a Sunday School Class. She worked at the County Court House for many years where she was a Secretary. She also worked for the Bill Luderson Agency and for Gregg Buck and Roberson Agency. She was an original member of the ABWA.

Survivors include:

1 Brother, Charles Abernathy & wife, Mary Altus,Ok

And a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Raymond, Dan, & Roger Abernathy and 3 sisters, Mae Gates, Freda Holloway, and Mildred Rowlett.

Services for Velma Abernathy are scheduled for 10 AM Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Marchal Acosta

Marchal Acosta, age 80 of Altus, passed away May 12, 2003 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services are set for Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Joe Tovar will officiate and burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M., there will be a memorial service at the funeral home.

Marchal was born July 5, 1922 at Powell, Texas to parents Marcos and Candida Acosta. In 1945, Marchal went into the United States Army. He was very proud of his military service. Marchal was united in marriage to Mary Barron at Waxahachie, Texas on June 2, 1951. In 1956, the family moved to the Altus area, where Marchal went to work as a foreman for Leger Mills and then Mayflower Van Lines. Marchal was a member of the Templo Sinai Spanish Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed visiting churches of all denominations and was a gifted musician. Marchal also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marchal was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mary of the home; six grandchildren, Julia and husband Tomas Revilla of Altus, Marchal Acosta Jr. of Altus, Irene Sanchez and husband Raymundo of Altus, Ray Acosta of Altus, Mary Dela Rosa of Dallas, Texas, Amelia Biddlecom of Altus; brothers, Ernest Acosta of Long Beach, California, Marcus Acosta of Fort Worth, Texas, Fermin Acosta of Long Beach, California; sisters, Louise Ruiz of Fort Worth, Texas, Mary Mitchel of Denver, Colorado, Virginia Sandla of San Pedro, California; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Herman R. Adams

Herman R. Adams, age 90 of Altus, passed away August 16, 2003. Services are set for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Richard Ventonis will officiate with Captain Ernest Hull assisting. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.

Herman was born August 22, 1912 at Royce City, Texas to parents John Thomas Adams and Laura Pearl Parks Adams. He was united in marriage to Beedie Estelle Agin on July 29, 1933 at Elmer, Oklahoma. They enjoyed many years of marriage. In the 1950’s, Herman moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona where he went to work as a school custodian for the public school system. He lived and worked in Phoenix for 21 years before returning to the Altus area in 1978. In retirement, Herman enjoyed playing Dominoes, working in the yard and watching wrestling. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Altus.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beedie in 1985; two children, Herman Adams Jr. in 1938 and Joyce Laverne Adams in 1949; and two sisters, Edna Mae Graham and Francis Ballew. Herman is survived by two sisters, Don Nell Graves and husband Wayne of Altus and Cloerene McKelvy and husband Lloyd of Altus; nieces, Linda Smith, Becky Vigil and Carol Frank; nephews, Tommy Graham, Gene Graham, Johnny Cox, James Cox, Billy Cox and numerous other great nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Zane Ellen Adams

Zane Ellen Adams, age 60 of Altus, passed away May 24, 2003. Memorial Services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2003, 10:00 a. m. at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Haynes Dugan and Rev. Dick Rosenbaum officiating. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Zane was born April 1, 1943 in Altus, Oklahoma to parents William “Edward” Adams and Rosa Mae Adams. She graduated from Altus High School in 1961. Following graduation, she attended business school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She married Donald Hansen in 1962 and lived in Oklahoma City until 1975 when she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Zane returned to Altus in 1984. She worked for the Wilmes Superstore for twenty years, where she was Office manager.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church was a very important part of her life. She was active in many different capacities in her church including President of the Daughters of the King, member of the Vestry, as well as, a Vestry Clerk and member of the Episcopal Church Women. Additionally, she was a member of the choir and the Alter Guild. She also served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Zane tutored for the Great Plains Literacy Council. She also enjoyed her weekly bridge game and sewing.

Zane was preceded in death by her father, William “Ed” Adams and one son, Donald Hansen, who passed away in 1991. She is survived by her mother, Rosa Adams of Altus; two children, Aaron Hansen and wife Celia of Leavenworth, Kansas and Kathy Davis of Altus; a brother, Gary Adams and wife Ethelene of Houston, Texas; a sister, Janis McSwain and husband Rick of Morrison, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Aubrey Hansen, Lonnie Hansen, Jacob Hansen, Miles Davis, Kelsey Davis; daughter in law, YunOk Hansen; two nephews, Shane Adams of Houston, Texas, David McSwain of Stillwater, Oklahoma, a niece, Kim Hansen of Edmond, Oklahoma and a host of other relatives and friends. The family has asked that memorials be made to the Alter Guild at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

JoAnn Hancock Allen

JoAnn Hancock Allen age 44, passed away Friday May 14, 2004 at her home in Henderson, Tennessee, JoAnn was a Juvenile Probation Officier with the Department of Human Services State of Tennessee.

JoAnn was born in Corinth, MS the daughter of Doyes Davis Hancock and the late George Monroe Hancock. She went to schools in Corinth, attended Western Oklahoma State College, and graduated form Lambuth University in Jackson with majors in Psychology and Sociology. She also had received her teacher’s certification form the State of Tennessee.

She married Michael Wayne Allen in 1976 and they made their home in Altus, Oklahoma until 1988 when they moved to Henderson, then to Jackson, and back to Henderson. She worked with Quinco Mental Health for four years and then with the Department of Human Services as a child abuse investigator and has also done volunteer work with the Foster Care Program. She had worked the past four years as a Juvenile Probation Officer with the Department of Human Services in Chester and surrounding counties.

JoAnn’s son and son-in-law are both involved in the ministry, which made her very proud. She loved her children and was a “people person”, spending all of her life living for God and others. She was member of the Lighthouse United Pentecostal Church in Jackson.

She is also survived by her husband Mike Allen of Henderson, a son Jeremy Michael Allen and wife Melissa of New Albany, MS and a daughter Maranda Mize and husband Brandon of West Memphis, ARK.

She is also survived by her mother Doyes Davis Hancock; two brothers Larry Hancock and Jimmy Hancock and a sister Sandy Hughes all of Corinth, MS.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 27,2004 at 11:00am at the Altus City Cemetery.

John Ashley

John Ashley, age 59, of Altus, OK passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Olustee.

Reverend Doug Altom will officiate with interment following in the Olustee Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. The family of John Ashley will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening May 13, 2003 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

John was born November 21, 1943 in Olustee, OK to Fred Ashley and Margaret (Simmons) Ashley. He lived and attended school in Olustee for many years. He joined the United States Army where he served for two years before being honorably discharged. On August 13, 1971, John and Susie Pfaff were united in marriage at Wellington, Texas.

John was the owner and operator of Movieland Video in Mangum. He also farmed and raised cattle in this area. John was very involved with the youth. He sponsored the Mangum Football Team, and his nephews at Altus Speedway for several years, and was known in the area as “Uncle Johnny.” John’s favorite pastime was rebuilding his 1982 S10 Pickup. John was totally devoted to his family and was always ready with a story allowing him to brag on his ‘kids’.

John was affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Olustee and with anything involving children.

John was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Robin Diane Boyd; and one brother, Lloyd Ervin Ashley.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Susie Ashley of the home in Altus; by two sons, Christopher Shawn Ashley and John Robert Ashley, Jr., both of Tononopah, Arizona; two daughters, Sherri Leigh Bergan, also of Tononopah, Arizona, and Kathy Harper and her husband, Chris of Mangum, Oklahoma; three sisters, Freda Lou Ashley of Altus, Oklahoma, Jaynelle Cash and husband, Ed of Oklahoma City, and Jo Ellen Williams of Bradenton, Florida; 8 grandchildren;special friends, Bob and Shirley Petkoff and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.

Freda Lou Ashley

Freda Lou Ashley, age 72 of Altus, passed away December 31, 2003 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Services, under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus, are set for 2:00 P.M. on Monday, January 5, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Olustee. The Rev. Doug Altom will officiate and interment will follow at the Olustee City Cemetery.

Lou was born at Olustee, Oklahoma on February 14, 1931 to parents William Frederick Ashley and Margaret Lee Simmons Ashley. Freda was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and had lived at the English Village Nursing Home for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Lloyd Ashley. Lou is survived by her two sisters, Jaynelle and husband Ed Cash of Oklahoma City and Jo Ellen Williams of Bradenton, Florida; sister in law, Susie Ashley of Altus; aunts, Oleta Robertson of Olustee and Gwen and Alex Swain of Olustee and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Nolan Harold Ayers

Nolan Harold Ayers, age 68, of Roosevelt died at the Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma Saturday, November 22, 2003. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Roosevelt Cemetery officiated by Rev. Jean Law.

Arrangements are with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Mr. Ayers will lie in state at Hackney-Gish Funeral Home in Hobart until service time.

Nolan was born February 14, 1935 in the Consolidated-8 community near Roosevelt, Oklahoma and was the son of A.D. (Bud) and Nettie Glee Ayers. He married Julia Ann Law June 17, 1960 in Roosevelt. He was a construction Foreman at Alltel for 34 years before retiring in 1993. Nolan served in the United States Army as well as the Army Reserve.

Survivors include his wife: Julia of the home. One (1) son: Neal Ayers and his wife Kristi of Dill City, OK. One (1) daughter: Sherry Downen and her husband Jerry of Rossevelt. Two (2) sisters: Carol Hunn and her husband Jake of Hobart. Charlene Maxwell and her husband Bill of Midwest City, OK. Six (6) grandchildren survive Kyle, Laira, Jordan, Lindsay, Jennifer and Jerry Lynn. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dawayne and Bill.

In liu of flowers the family request donations be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Alzheimer’s Division.

Denny Dean Adams

Denny Dean Adams, age 58 passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at United Regional Health Care System.

On April 27, 1947 Denny was born to George Adams Jr. and Flossie Marie (Reed) in Altus, Oklahoma.

Denny loved to collect keys and locks, watching T.V., cartoon, baseball and loved to listen to Elvis Presley songs.

He is preceded in death by his mother Flossie Marie Adams, grandmother, Lois Adams (who took care of him), grandfather, George Adams Sr., grandparents, Jay and Velma Reed and niece, Amanda Adams.

Denny is survived by his father George Adams Jr. of Vernon, Texas, one brother, Donald Lee Adams and wife Debbie of Blossom, Texas, one niece, Angela Faye Adams, of Blossom, Texas, one nephew, Joseph Everett and wife Amber of Wichita Falls, Texas, five great nieces and nephews, one aunt, Audrey Ambrose and husband John of Wichita Falls, Texas, and two uncles, Charles Lamb Adams of Lawton, Oklahoma and Grady Adams of Austin, Texas.

Graveside services were held Thursday, May 5,2005 at 3:00pm at Altus City Cemetery. Under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Roy Acosta

Roy Acosta, age 51 of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, October 28,2006 at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma.

He was born May 27,1955 in Ellis County, Texas to Marshall Acosta and Mary (Barron) Acosta. Roy had lived in the Altus and Jackson County area all of his life. He worked for Chevalley Moving and Storage Company in Altus for twenty years. Roy’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his mother Mary Acosta of Altus, Oklahoma, two children; Carla Acosta and Tony Acosta both of Altus, Oklahoma. He is also survived by two sisters; Julia Revilla and husband Tommy of Altus, and Irene Sanchez and husband Raymond of Altus; one brother Marshall Acosta, Jr. also of Altus, Oklahoma, and a host of other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marshall Acosta.

Funeral Services for Roy Acosta are scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. in the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Tovar officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

The family of Roy Acosta will greet friends Monday evening October 30, 2006, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Wendell Dewayne Adams

Wendell Dewayne Adams, age 85, of Nicoma Park, Oklahoma passed away Monday, July 3, 2006 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He lived and farmed in the Headrick area for many years before moving to Nicoma Park.

He was born April 6, 1921 in Headrick, Oklahoma to John Emore Adams and Ella Winnie Adams. On July 12, 1942 in Hobart, Oklahoma Dewayne and Winnie Mae Barker were united in marriage. She preceded him in death July 16, 1983.

After retiring from farming he found many hobbies that he enjoyed, especially making monuments for cemeteries and the annual trips to seven cemeteries and fifty-one gravesites where he placed flowers and flags on the graves.

He also enjoyed raising birds and designing lawn statues; and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by four sons, Jerry Adams and wife Alice of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Richard Adams and wife Barbara of Headrick, Oklahoma, Tommie Adams and wife Evelyn of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Billy Adams and wife Sharyn of Midwest City, Oklahoma. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, Robin Merlene Adams, three brothers, and four sisters.

Funeral services for Dewayne Adams are scheduled for Friday, July 7, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt.Park Cemetery in Mt. Park, Oklahoma under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

The family will greet friends Thursday evening July 6, 2006 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Richard Wayne Adams

Richard Wayne Adams, 65, of Headrick, lost his battle to cancer on Monday, August 15, 2011 in Altus, Oklahoma, surrounded by family.

Richard was born September 8, 1945, to Wendell Dewayne and Winnie Mae (Barker) Adams in Mountain Park, Oklahoma, at the Mountain Park Hotel. He grew up on a farm on the river bend in Headrick, Oklahoma. He worked since he was about five years of age and was a hard worker even then. He attended the Friendship School and graduated in 1963. He loved horses, loved to worked, most of all, he loved his family. On July 9, 1970, Richard married Barbara Dailey at the Baptist Church in Headrick. They had five children, all girls. He worked for the Badger Oil Company for a few years in the mid 1970's. Richard was also a night watchman at the Headrick Gin & Co-Op for many years. He worked for Hartsel Morris and then John Foley, changing flats for many years as well as doing his own work at Adams Tire Service. Richard worked for Don Petzold for Petzold Services as well as on Don's farm for several years before Don's death. Don was a very dear friend to Richard. The last several years, he worked out of a little tire shop across the tracks from the sheriff's department on South Main. He had many loyal customers and many friends who stopped in to either get a tire changed or just shoot the breeze. Richard was a hard working man and there wasn't a tire that he couldn't fix. He used good ol' fashioned tools, hard work, and elbow grease to get the job done. He was a kind, honest, and sincere man who would give the shirt off his back to help those in need, whether he knew them or not.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Robin Merlene Adams. He leaves behind his wife of forty-one years, Barbara Adams; five daughters, Sherrie Adams and Trina Adams, both of Altus, Brandy Adams of Roosevelt, Sue Morris and husband Tim of Headrick, and Faith Lara of Roosevelt; three brothers, Jerry Adams and wife Alice of Midwest City, Tommy Adams and wife Evelyn of Midwest City, and B.J. Adams of Nicoma Park. He had thirteen grandchildren, Tim Vargas and wife Steffanee, Christopher Macias, Ricky, Robert, and Blake Adams, Anthony Adams, Sarena, Alyssa and Wayne Morris, Colton, Erika, Sierra, and Trista Lara, two great-grandchildren, Austin and Charlie Adams, and several nieces. Richard had several close friends, Cooper Wilson, Buddy Hawthorne, Guy and Beverly Thompson, Rocky Kelly, Ivan Jones, Dwain Chisum, Annette Erickson, Sue Petzold, Butch Elliot, Larry and Ryan Bradley, Bill Boyd, and Theresa and Steve Jameson. Richard was especially fond of his horses, "Dog" and "Shelby."

The family requests that memorial donations in memory of Richard Wayne Adams be made to Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.

Richard will lie in state Wednesday evening until service time on Friday. Friends are welcome to view him in the stateroom at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home even after the memorial service.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 18, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 19 at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Pastor Adam Saavedra officiating. Friends are invited to be present when Richard's cremains are buried on his birthday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m. at the Mountain Park Cemetery.
