Dorothy Evelyn Garvin

Dorothy E. Garvin was born July 9, 1916 in Paintsville, Kentucky. She was the oldest daughter of the late George
H. and Eunice (Combs) Preston and grew up on the family farm near Elk City during the Dustbowl. She died March
1, 2006, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
She met and married Buel Garvin in 1940 at Clinton, Oklahoma, while they were both students at Southwestern
State Teachers’ College in Weatherford. They met in the cafeteria kitchen where they washed dishes to pay for
college expenses.
Dorothy has been a resident of Altus and Jackson County since 1950 and taught English in Altus schools until her
retirement in 1975. She began her teaching career at Wilson Elementary and moved to Northeast Junior High when it
was completed. The last portion of her professional career was spent teaching American literature, which she loved,
to students at Altus High School. A life-long learner herself, Dorothy took art and piano classes as an adult and
completed her Master’s degree after she turned fifty.
Dorothy belonged to a number of historical and professional organizations including the DAR, BPW, Oklahoma
Retired Teachers’ Association, and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She and Buel were
long-time supporters, not only of Altus High School athletics, but also of both the OU and OSU football programs.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family, including her five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, George, and four sisters, Kitty, Ann, Betsy, and
Billie Kay.
She is survived by four children; Sue Haley of Scottsdale, Arizona, James Garvin of Altus, Oklahoma, Harold Garvin
of Montgomery, Texas, Jo Anne Nusbaum and husband Tom of Moline, Illinois; two sisters, Patty Brewster and
husband Verland of Edmond, Oklahoma, Mary Whitehead and husband Floyd of Tuttle, Oklahoma.
A Celebration of Life service for Dorothy Garvin will be held Monday, March 6, 2006 at 12:00 at First United
Methodist Church with Rev. David Player officiating.
The Family of Dorothy Garvin will greet friends Sunday afternoon March 5, 2006 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at
Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made in memory of Dorothy Garvin to the Altus Public Library or a charity of choice.

Eddie Glen Garvin

Eddie Glen Garvin, age 58 of Blair, passed away suddenly Saturday evening, July 8, 2006 at Jackson County
Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 10, 1947 in Hollis, Oklahoma to Willard O. and Opal D. (Seright) Garvin, Jr. Eddie
graduated from Altus High School in 1966 and after graduation he moved to California where he meet the love of
his life, Shelly McClusky. On February 18,1978, in Daly City, California, they were united in marriage. In 1979,
they moved back to the Altus area.

Eddie worked at Otasco’s, Skinner Toyota and Johnny Roberts Motors until he began work at Wilmes Chevrolet
where he served as parts manager until the time of his death.

Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife, Shelly Garvin of the home; two daughters, Melissa
Fixico and husband Dustin of Yukon, Oklahoma and Michelle Downing and husband Justin of Blair; three sons,
Shawn Garvin of Norman, Oklahoma, Rodney Hays and wife Michelle of Frisco, Texas and Ryan Hays of Frisco,
Texas; one brother, Larry Garvin of Kingfisher, Oklahoma; his mother-in-law, Stella McClusky of Altus along with
many cousins, aunts, uncles and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Eddie Garvin will be Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel
with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Internment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-
Tims Funeral Home of Altus.

The family of Eddie Garvin will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Monday, July 10, 2006 from 6 until
8 p.m.

GARZA

Michael Dewayne Garza, age 26 of Stamford, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2006 in Jones County Texas
as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Michael was born on August 8, 1979 in Chillicothe, Texas to Danny Salazar Garza and Deedra (Carroll) Freeman.
On March 12, 1998 he married Tasha Lewis. Moving to Stamford in 2003, Michael was employed in the
construction field with energy windmills. He enjoyed playing video games and the simple life, but his most favorite
thing of all was spending time with his children and other family members.

Preceded in death by his uncle, Noe Garza, he is survived by his wife Tasha Lewis of the home; three children,
Makila Garza and Jelly Belly Garza, of the home and Michael Anthony Garza of Vernon; his mother, Deedra Lewis
and husband Larry of Lueders, Texas; his father, Danny Salazar Garza and wife Maria of Lawton, Oklahoma; one
brother, Joshua Garza and wife Jessica of Olney, Texas; one sister, Michelle Garza of Lueders, Texas;
grandparents, Juan and Ester Garza of Bowie, Texas, Henry Freeman of Vernon, Texas and Venita Ray of Vernon,
Texas; mother-in-law, Angel Lewis of Altus; father-in-law, Ivory Darton of Wellington, Texas and a host of aunts,
uncles, cousins, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services for Michael Dewayne Garza will be Thursday, July 13, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Thomas Hanes officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the
direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.

The family of Michael Dewayne Garza will greet friends on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at
Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

GATES

Stephen Andrew Gates, age 36, of Olustee, passed away at his home on Monday evening, June 25, 2007.

Stephen was born on July 17, 1970, in Guam, to Kenneth and Linda (Mann) Gates. Graduating from high school
in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he joined the United States Army. Discharging in 1990, Stephen began work in
Dallas, Texas, working for Cummins Southern Plains Diesel Parts and later transferred to the Oklahoma City
location. In April 2007, Stephen moved to Jackson County to be closer to his family.

Stephen is survived by his parents, Don and Nancy Tally, Sr., of Edmond, Oklahoma; three brothers, Don Tally of
Olustee, Eddie Tally of Olustee and Harve Newby of Edmond; one sister, Angela Dawn McBride and husband
Rob of Victor, New York, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

A memorial service for Stephen Andrew Gates will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2007, at Lowell-Tims
Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evia May George

Evia May George, age 89 of Altus, passed away April 7, 2003 at her home. Services are set for 2:00 P.M.,
Thursday, April 10, 2003 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. T.J. Willingham officiating.
Graveside services, will follow on Friday, April 11, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at Lorado Cemetery in Lorado, Arkansas.
Evia was born October 11, 1913, to parents George Berry and Martha Lovella Settlemar Berry. She was united in
marriage to Cleo George on March 28, 1931. They enjoyed many years together. She worked as a homemaker and
was devout in her Baptist faith. She was also a devoted mother and grandmother. Evia was preceded in death by her
husband Cleo in 1967.
She is survived by one son, Cecil George of Altus; one daughter, Emma Lou Brown and husband Keith of Evansville,
Indiana; sister in law, Zula George of Rector, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Robert Lynn George of Weatherford,
Oklahoma, Kimberley Michelle Parsons of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Carolyn Carter, Keith Carter, Bobby Steele and
eight great grandchildren, C.J. George, Alisha Parsons, Cecilia King, Robert Lecrone, Robert Nunez, Travis Spradlin,
Jennifer Tieken and Jason Brown.

Sarena Lucille Gililland

Sarena Lucille Gililland age 85, passed away Friday, December 31, 2004 at Plantation Nursing Center. Mrs.
Gililland was born to John and Rhoda (Fimple) Cates on October 20, 1919 in Moorewood, Oklahoma. She
graduated from Weatherford High School and later graduated with a teaching certificate from South Western State
College. She taught for the Oklahoma State School for the Deaf in Sulphur, OK and also taught at the Highway
School, south of Elk City, in at Merritt , Muskogee, and Burns Flat, before her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and two sisters; Irene and Iris. Sarena is survived by her
husband; J.R. Gililland, of Altus, OK, three sons; J. Roger Gililland and wife Jean of McLean, VA, Bruce R. Gililland
of San Jose, CA and Mark Gililland and wife Jan of Altus, OK, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren,
numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, host of friends and former students.

Services will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno, OK
with Dr. Burrel McNaught officiating. Interment will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. at the
Lawnview Cemetery in Cordell, Oklahoma. Services will be under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of
Altus, 580-482-1233.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children Hospital or to a charity of your choice.

J.R. Gililland

J.R. Gililland, age 90, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at Plantation Villages, Altus, Oklahoma.
He was born to William and Minnie Gililland in Durant, Oklahoma, on August 8, 1914, he was the youngest of seven.
He graduated from high school in Sickles, Oklahoma and went on scholarship to get his bachelors degree and teaching
certificate at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He received his Southwestern athletic letters in
football and baseball. He later gained his Masters Degree in School Administration at Oklahoma A&M University
(OSU) in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
J.R married Sarena Lucille Cates of Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1941.
With the exception of a brief tour in the California Ship Yards during World War II, J.R spent his professional career as
a longtime teacher and school administrator in Oklahoma. His teaching career began in Erick, Oklahoma as grade
school principal and coach. In 1944 he was named Superintendent of Highway School south of Elk City. He later held
Superintendent positions at Merritt, Sulphur, Muskogee and Clinton. In 1968, JR was named Superintendent of the
Canadian Valley Area Oklahoma Vocational-Technical School in El Reno, where he retired in 1979.
J.R. really enjoyed his basketball coaching days at the Highway School, during the 1940’s, silk uniformed boys and girls
basketball was taken very seriously in Beckham county much as it is today. J.R. loved to talk about his basketball
players and students that meant so much to him and his teaching partner Sarena. He was a member of the Elk City
Masonic lodge #182, and reached the degree of master mason.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sarena, of 63 years, and three brothers, Herman, Floyd, Bill, and three sisters,
Jimmie, Belma and Ruth.
J.R is survived by his three sons, Roger Gililland and wife Jean Ann of McLean, Virginia., Bruce Gililland of San Jose,
CA. and Mark Gililland and wife Jan of Altus, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, great nieces, great nephews, family and students that will miss him always.
Services will be held Monday, July 11, 2005, at 10:00 am at the Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno,
Oklahoma. Interment will follow at the El Reno Cemetery in El Reno, Oklahoma. Under the direction of Lowell-Tims
Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to St. Jude children hospital or the charity of your choice.

GILPATRICK

Keith Gilpatrick, age 68, of Altus, passed away Friday, February 8, 2008, at Plantation Village Care Center.

Keith was born on October 9, 1939, to Howard and Madelyn (Talkington) Gilpatrick in Altus. On June 20, 1970,
he married Peggy Hamilton in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He was known throughout southwest Oklahoma as a
forty-three year employee of Johnny Roberts Motors. A member of Southside Baptist Church, Keith enjoyed
fishing, but spending time with his family and friends brought the most joy to his life.

Preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Delores Lucas Gilpatrick in 1967, he is survived by wife, Peggy, of
the home; three sons, Kenneth Gilpatrick and wife Denise of Altus, Kevin Gilpatrick of Henrietta, Texas and Todd
Gilpatrick of Mangum; one daughter, Christy Harris and husband Stephen of Altus; six grandchildren, Stephen,
Kayla, Dalton, Haley, Hunter and Hannah; one brother, Bobby Gilpatrick and wife Trish of Denton, Texas; three
sisters, Phyllis Stark and husband Willard of Yukon, Oklahoma, Lana Hacking and husband Doug of Salt Lake
City, Utah and Cathy Watson and husband Brad of Yukon, Oklahoma; aunt and uncle, Mary Jo and Johnny
Roberts of Altus along with many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Keith Gilpatrick will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at Lowell-Tims Funeral
Home with Brother Jason Duree officiating. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family will greet friends on Monday, February 11, 2008, from 6 until 7 p.m.

Orilla Glenn

Orilla Glenn died noon Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services will be 2:00 pm
Friday at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn
Cemetery.
The family of Orilla Glenn will greet friend Thursday, May 25, 2006 from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral
Home.
She was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Bryan County, Oklahoma to Joel Wesley and Lillie Mae Dearing Allen. She moved to
the Altus area with her family in 1927. She attended school at Hatcher, Blue, Hess, Pleasant Point and Porter High. She
married Adrian Glenn on Jan. 5, 1937. He died on Feb. 9, 1963. She chopped cotton, pulled bowls and plowed.
Following her husband’s death, she supported her youngest son, Mark by cleaning houses, selling Avon working at the
base cleaners, ironing and waitressing. She worked at McDonald’s at the age of 80, but retired due to declining health.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed watching the Texas
Rangers baseball team and her favorite players, Michael Young, Kevin “Big Head” Mench, Alfonso “Bubble Gum”
Soriano and Mark (Tex) Teixierra. She also enjoyed watching the Oklahoma Sooners play football, feeding the birds in
her back yard and her dog, Sandy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adrian; mother, Lillie Mae Dearing Allen; father, Joel Wesley Allen; four
brothers, Otis Allen, Leslie Allen, Troy Allen and Floyd Allen; three sisters, Ella Mae Trimble, Ora Kime and Ola Pearl
Allen.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry Glenn of Wilmington, N.C. and Mark of Altus; several nieces and nephews and
many friends.

Gober

Edith Bell Gober, 93, longtime Altus resident passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2007, in Orlando, Florida.

Edith was born September 8, 1913, in Eldorado, Oklahoma. She was the third of six children born to Ed Edward
and Nora Bell (Smith) Doughten. On September 14, 1929, at the age of 16, Edith married Herbert H. Gober in Altus,
Oklahoma. Making their home in Altus, they joined the Thomas Street Church of Christ where they remained devoted
members. Edith and Herbert raised a very loving and close religious family. They were wonderful parents who always
put their children before themselves. They taught their children, not only good moral values, but also how to enjoy each
day and to enjoy all of God’s blessings and how to love and care for one another. They had over 63 wonderful years
together before he passed away on December 18, 1992.

Edith worked for many years at the Petite Shop on the Altus Square. As she became a grandmother, she rarely
took home any money, instead used her wages to outfit her grandchildren whom she was so proud of and loved so
much.Edith took great pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her numerous nieces
and nephews.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Eddie Gober of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Sue Bippes and husband
Eddie of Orlando, Florida, and Joyce Higgins of San Diego, California; one sister, Elva Gober of Ft. Worth, Texas; eight
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. “Hub” Gober; her parents, Ed and Nora Doughten; two
brothers, John Troy and Lloyd Doughten; and by two sisters, Edna Webster and Evelyn Burge.

Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Thursday at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Bill Osborne officiating.
Interment will follow in the Restlawn Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of
Altus.

The family will be receiving friends from 5:30 to 6:30, Wednesday evening at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
