Leota Smith Mabry

Leota Smith Mabry, age 95, passed away late Saturday evening, December 10, 2005 at Grace Living Center in
Altus.

Leota was born October 12, 1910, on the family farm seven miles south of Altus to George and Sophia Smith.
George was foreman of the Rocking Chair Ranch, and Sophia was a farmer’s daughter in Wilbarger County,
Texas. They came to Jackson County, Oklahoma in 1905 just after their first child, Opal, was born. Leota was
their second child.

She went to Porter school, which no longer exists, and graduated from there in 1926, at the age of 16. She went to
Oklahoma Normal School (now UCO) in Edmond for two years, and got her teaching certificate. She taught at
Manitou for a short time, and then at Elmer where some of her students were older than she, and most of them
taller. She met a young man of that community, Ernest Mabry, and married at the height of the depression on July
12, 1932. They tried to farm south of Altus, but that wasn’t much of a success in that era. For a while they lived in
Elmer, where their first child, Tisha, who died at birth, was born as was their second child, Nancy, who died in
1941. During the depression, Leota taught Home Demonstration classes and, among other things, she taught ladies
to cut down their husband’s old suits to make tailored suits for themselves. By 1942, they had moved to Altus,
where Ernest went to work as a shoe salesman for the C. R. Anthony Company. They had a third child, Karen, and
shortly thereafter Ernest received his draft notice from the US Army. During the war, Leota put her homemaking
skills to good use. She sewed for other folks while she reared her child and waited for her soldier to come home.

In the community of Elmer and the town of Altus, and from all around Jackson County, they had many, many friends
who remained friends throughout their lives. Leota lived the American Dream in the forties, fifties, sixties and
seventies, the kind the movies try to portray and never get right. Her cooking, housekeeping and gardening skills
were the very finest, and she made a beautiful home for her little family. She hosted executives from the General
Office in Oklahoma City, and she served a home cooked turkey and ham dinner to all the Anthony employees every
year until Ernest retired in 1976. She was the woman behind the successful man.

Sometimes she would substitute teach when a teacher was out sick. She was the kind of mom who put Harriet
Nelson and June Cleaver to shame. She and Ernest had a good marriage. Later, Leota went to work in the
Anthony store with Ernest, and they could at last share their days. After Ernest and Leota retired in 1976, they
traveled some, but mostly they just enjoyed their home and their time with each other. Leota didn’t get to see her
four grandchildren, Karl, Kristin, Katryn, and Kurt Kueteman much, because they lived too far away.
After Ernest passed away in 1991, she had more time to spend with her grandchildren, who had always been too far
away. They were grown by then, but she had her great-grandchildren.

During her years in Grace Living Center, where she was graciously cared for, she knew some of her old friends and
acquaintances who were still there. Even though she no longer had her memory the last few years, those who loved
her have the memories she left for them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two children, one brother; W. C. Smith, a sister, Joan
Simmons and one grandson. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Rice and spouse T.L. Rice of De Soto, Illinois;
two sisters, Katie Lu Tomlinson of Concordia, Kansas and; Oleta Slivak of Bentonville, Arkansas and a brother,
Carl Smith of Jackson County, Oklahoma.

Viewing for Leota Smith Mabry will be Tuesday, December 13, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Lowell-Tims
Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home
Chapel with Jerry Don Henry officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-
Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
