her life. She was of the Catholic faith.

Mary Ruth Smalts

Mary “Ruth” Smalts departed this life and went home to be with her Lord on July 7th at the age of 83. She had
been a resident of Plantation Village Nursing Home for the past three years. She was born September 13, 1920,
near Cookville, Texas, the youngest of 10 children. When Ruth was 9 years old, she moved with her family to a farm
near Carter, Oklahoma. A few years later, the family moved to Elk City, where she graduated from high school with
honors.

Ruth was a compassionate young lady. She participated in many extra-curricular activities while in high school,
including drama and radio broadcasting, She was the school news reporter on the local radio station. During her
senior year, Ruth was chosen to receive the “Daughters of the American Revolution” outstanding citizenship medal,
which she cherished greatly. Ruth loved to sing and was always in the church choir, wherever she might be. She
gave her heart to the Lord as a teen and became a member of First Baptist Church, Elk City. After graduation, Ruth
attended business college then worked as a secretary.

On August 23, 1941, she married Everett L. Smalts, her high school classmate, who was a ministerial student at
Oklaoma Baptist University. She also enrolled in some college classes, along with her new husband. Ruth was the
loving mother of six sons, but she found time to give each son that special attention every boy needs. She filled the
role of a preacher’s wife with grace and dignity. Her life, her time, and her talents were all focused on helping others.
Ruth loved to entertain family and friends with funny stories and was known for “acting them out” as only she could
do. Two of her virtues were her firm handshake and radiant smile. At the nursing home in her final years, she
became known as “Sunshine”. The legacy Ruth leaves with her family and friends is the lesson she taught us to
always love the Lord and love others, no matter how different they may be from us.
