Jackie Tims Snell

Jackie Tims Snell, 80, lifetime resident of Altus, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Jackie was born May 18, 1929, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Roy Alford and Nellie Mae (Miller) Tims.

She attended Altus Public Schools and graduated from Altus High School in 1947.

She then attended OBU in Shawnee for one year before getting married in 1948.

Jackie belonged to several clubs in Altus including the Aldonian Club and Beta Mother’s Club and was a volunteer for several charitable organizations.

She was involved with ACMI House and supported its program with her time and money.

Jackie received a plaque from the American Cancer Society for public relations.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus where she taught Sunday School from 1946 to 1996.

Jackie loved all aspects of her church, but was especially supportive of the TV Ministry.

Her favorite hobby was golfing, and she was awarded a trophy for women’s champion at the Elk’s Club in Altus.

Preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Nellie Tims, and one brother, Sonny Tims, Jackie is survived by one daughter, Ruth Starr and husband Bill of Altus; one son, J. Snell and wife Becky of Ponca City, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Tara Starr of Tulsa, and Calyn Snell of Norman; one sister, Linda Hasley of Oklahoma City; one brother, Michael Paul Tims and wife Mickie of Oklahoma City; one aunt, Sybil Dunskie of Oklahoma City; a sister-in-law, Reta Tims of Altus; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and several cousins.

Contributions may be made to the Altus First Baptist Church TV Ministry.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.

Interment will follow at Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.

Dr. Bennett C. Wray

Dr. Bennett C. Wray, lifelong resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away at Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Sunday July 5th, 2009 at the age of 86 years old.

He was one of two (2) children born to Bennett P. Wray and Nona Boatman Wray, in Sayre Oklahoma on March 23, 1923.

He graduated from Crane High School in Crane Texas and attended the University of Texas at El Paso on a football scholarship before enlisting in the U.S. Coastguard in 1942.

He entered Naval flight training in 1944 and later served in the Pacific theater during World War II.

Following his release from active duty at the end of World War II, he attended Texas A & M University where he graduated as a Distinguished Military Student, receiving his commission in the United States Air Force and graduated with honors in 1949, having received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and wildlife management.

At the age of 16, he attained scouting’s highest award as an “Eagle Scout” and later attended Boy Scouts of America Professional Training School in Mendham, New Jersey, in summer of 1949 and became certified as a professional scouter assigned to the Altus area.

He then began the organizing of Boy Scout troops throughout southwest Oklahoma and continued on as the coordinator of the scouting programs throughout the scouting district, including serving on the Kickingbird District Council.

In addition, he served as scoutmaster for the First United Methodist Church for many years.

On January 5th, 1952, he married Mary Ann Humphreys at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

That same year Dr. Wray was recalled to active duty service in the United States Air Force to serve in the Korean War and was attached to the U.S. Army 443 Engineering Corp. at Kunsan, Korea.

After his release from active duty in Korea, Dr. Wray became employed as a regional biologist for the State of Oklahoma in Wagner, Oklahoma.

In 1953, he was admitted to the University of Houston College of Optometry in Houston, Texas, where he graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1956.

Dr. Wray served on the Dean’s Selection Committee at the University of Houston and was a member of the Oklahoma Optometric Association.

Upon graduation from optometry school he returned to Altus where he established his optometric practice that continued until his retirement at the age of 75.

Dr. Wray was a past president of the Altus Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Altus Kiwanis Club, Altus Golf & Country Club and was member of the Altus Schools Board of Education for thirteen (13) years, having served as president prior to his retirement from the Board in 1989.

Dr. Wray also served as chairman of the Altus Metropolitan Planning Commission at its inception, was a member of the Altus Airport Advisory board for many years and also served as a member of the Jackson County Trust Authority.

In 1977 and again in 1989, he was given and received the Distinguished Citizen Award by 443 Headquarters Altus AFB Command.

He was a well-known lay speaker at area churches throughout his life and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Altus, Oklahoma.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed a lifetime of golfing, hunting, fishing, snow skiing, and most of all his time spent with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennett Wray and Nona Wray, and his sister, Leona Lackey.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Wray of Altus, Oklahoma, a son, Chris Wray and his wife, Robin Wray, also of Altus, Oklahoma, a daughter, Alyson Geister and her husband, Dr. Brian Geister of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and a son, Steve Wray and his wife, Sheri Wray of Findlay, Ohio, six grandsons, Christopher Wray, Bennett Geister, Brandon Geister, Nicholas Geister, Preston Wray and Ryan Wray, and two granddaughters, Kelsey Wray and Elizabeth Wray, and a nephew, K.D. Lackey and his wife, Barbara Lackey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Memorial Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 502, Altus, OK, 73521.

A “Celebration of Life” ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8th, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Altus, Oklahoma, under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral home.

Keith Elvin Cumbie

Keith Elvin Cumbie, age 52, passed away Thursday December 15, 2011 at the OU Trauma Center in Oklahoma City following a tragic accident.

Keith was born May 13, 1959 in Odessa, TX to O.E. Cumbie and Betty Jean Cumbie.

Keith moved to Mangum in 1975.

Keith met the love of his life Carol Ann Smith and they were married in Mangum on May 11, 1979.

Keith and Carol shared 32 love filled years together and enjoyed sharing their lives with their two daughters Amanda and Jenna.

After receiving his Master’s degree in Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Weatherford, OK., Keith moved to the Altus area, where he taught secondary math for Altus Public Schools.

Keith was a member of the Martha Road Baptist Church.

Keith spent his time outside of school farming and his summers as a custom wheat harvester.

He was a member of Professional Oklahoma Educators; active member of Farm Bureau; and a life time member of the NRA.

He enjoyed driving his Mustang Saleen and was a member of the Saleen Club of America.

Keith enjoyed life to the fullest.

He loved to hunt, go to auctions, watch Texas Longhorn football, OU and Thunder basketball.

He adored all of his family and friends and enjoyed playing cards and visiting with all of them.

One of his greatest loves was watching his grandson Jaxon play basketball, cars, and tractors.

Keith was a very caring and generous person.

He was a believer in Jesus Christ, spent time reading his Bible, and always helped others when the opportunity presented itself.

Keith was preceeded in death by his father O.E. Cumbie, and a grandson Matthew Allen Medlock Jr.

He is survived by his wife Carol, his mother Betty Jean Cumbie of Mangum, his father-in-law Henry Smith of Reed OK; two daughters Amanda Konen and husband Bobby of Altus, Jenna Medlock and husband Matt of San Antonio, TX; one sister Kathy Harry and husband Chuck of Dove Canyon, CA; one brother Kenneth Cumbie of Hubbard, TX; one grandson Jaxon Keith Konen; his best buddy Tony Sonaggera and his son Trey Sonaggera; and a host of friends and relatives.

Services will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 2:30 pm at the First Baptist Church of Altus, with Reverend Kevin Baker officiating.

Interment will follow in the Reed Cemetery with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive guests on Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Lowell-Tims.

Lahoma Raines Baker

Lahoma Baker passed away on Oct. 28, 2011.

Lahoma Raines Baker was born Lahoma Baucum on August 16, 1914 to James B. Baucum and Myrtle Wiginton Baucum.

She was the great-granddaughter of Wiley Baucum, who, in 1890 petitioned the Office of the Postmaster in Washington, D.C., for a post office, which his son W.A. Baucum suggested should be named "Altus".

Serving as the first postmaster, Wiley Baucum opened the Altus Post Office on October 27, 1890.

Mrs. Baker moved to the Pleasant Point community in 1921 where she graduated from high school in 1931.

On May 14, 1932, she married Jon Findlay Raines and moved back to Altus.

They had three sons, Jon Philip Raines, Ted Curtis Raines, and Lynn William Raines.

Mrs. Baker was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altus for most of the years from 1932 until 1996.

She retired from the office of the District Attorney after many years of employment with Jackson County.

The Kiwanis Club selected Outstanding Older Worker in May of 1992 while employed by Marlene's Hallmark store.

She served as pianist and organist for the Presbyterian and Episcopal Churches and was active in community organizations.

Two sons survive Mrs. Baker, Ted Curtis Raines and wife Linda of Winona, Texas and Lynn William Raines of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Don Baucum and Tom Baucum; and one sister, Virginia Monroney.

Her husband, Jon Findlay Raines preceded her in death in 1976.

One son, Jon Philip, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, her parents, James and Myrtle Baucum, and two brothers, Benton Baucum and Bill Baucum also preceded her in death.

On January 20, 1996, she married Morris Baker and moved to Sulphur, Oklahoma.

He died in 1997.

His daughters, Rene Ann Kennedy and Betty Green, and his son, Charles Baker and their extended families also survive her.

Memorial Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, November 4, 2011 at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Rev. Thacker Haynes officiating.

Inurnment will follow in the Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
