Alton Ray Billings
Alton Ray Billings, 88, of Poteau, passed away
Monday, Dec. 3, 2001. He was born Dec. 10, 1912 in Poteau. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Poteau. He owned and operated Billings TV Repair in Poteau for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nan Billings in 1974.
Survivors include his wife Ruth Billings of the home; one daughter, Ruth Ann Ellis of the home; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Jim and Mary Billings of Wister; four grandsons, Ray Don Ellis and Matthew Dale Ellis, Jeffrey and Brenda Billings, and Scott and Jill Billings, all of Poteau; one granddaughter and husband, Cindy and Doug Heimbichner; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones; and a host of beloved friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at First Baptist Church in Poteau with the Rev. Phil McGehee officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
James Jenson
James Milton Jenson, 72, of Heavener, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001. He was a chef and realty agent in California for many years. He graduated from Poteau High School, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict stationed in Iceland. He attended California State Poly Technical Institutional and was a longtime Sunday School teacher and member of the Forrester Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by four brothers; one sister; and a special friend, Tommy Baker.
Survivors include his wife Carol of the home; two daughters, Gail Oswald and husband Jim of Waldron, Ark. and Karen Doran and husband Pat of Losa, Calif.; two sons, Andy Jenson of Tulsa and Jeff Jenson and wife Jennifer of Los Angeles, Calif.; five sisters, Rose Mixon, Dorothy Toby and husband Guthrie, Eleanor Nickles and husband A.C., all of Poteau, Betty Sommers and husband Lloyd of Fort Smith and Freda Lester of Valley Center, Calif.; and one brother, the Rev. Charley Jenson of Poteau.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at Forrester Baptist Church in Heavener. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
William Johnson
William "Bill" Johnson, 70, of Panama, died Sunday, April 14, 2001. He was born Oct. 1, 1930 at Shady Point to William Curtis and Julia Gertrude Justus Johnson. He was a retired truck driver and mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and one brother.
He is survived by his wife Kathy of the home; two daughters, Vickie Lee Patres of Phoenix, Ariz. and Debra Ann Floyd of Vian; one step daughter, Kristina Renee Crossland of the home; one son, Curtis Wayne Johnson of Downy, Calif.; one step son, Brandon Wayne Crossland of the home; one sister, Estella Lewis of Panama; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18 at the Mallory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
Pallbearers will be Dave Schuster, Ed Smith, Dewayne Terrill, Wayne Armstrong, James Mize, George Boyd, Brad Stroud and Dennis Hope.
T.R. Ackley
T.R. "Dick" Ackley, 76, of Heavener, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Poteau. He was a long time resident of Heavener, a member of the First Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one step daughter, Frances Benton of Woodward; two step sons, Larry Wright of Fort Smith and Bob Long of Texas; four sisters, Dortha Boyington and Phyllis Studebaker, both of Mannford, Ruth Garrison of Cleveland, and Marcia Coleman of Tulsa; 10 step-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Heavener. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
Jessie Caudell
Jessie Argle Caudell, 93, of Wister, died Monday, April 16, 2001, in Poteau. He was born Oct. 14, 1907 in Heavener. He was a retired from Oklahoma State Highway Department, a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Wister and a gardner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Caudell; a son, Bill Caudell of Yucca Valley, Calif.; and a daughter, Fern Whitby of Warner.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Horace "Ike" and Barbara Caudell of Wister; one daughter and son-in-law, Joye and John Peerson of Sallisaw; special niece, Mary Sue Cunningham of Arlington, Texas; numerous other relatives and loved ones; and a host of beloved friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 at First Southern Baptist Church of Wister with the Revs. Clarence Barton and Don Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Glendale.
Ruby Ellen (Edwards) Barbee
Ruby Ellen (Edwards) Barbee, 77, of Enterprise, Okla. was born Nov., 15, 1920 in Quinton, Okla. to George and Ellie (Baker) Edwards. She died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 in a local hospital in Stigler, Okla. She was a homemaker.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 at the Sandridge Pentecostal Church with Rev. Dwain Maxwell and Rev. Bill Shirel officiating. Interment will follow at Palestine Cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home, Stigler.
Pallbearers are Don Parker, Riley Roberts, Nathan Trollinger, Kenneth Barbee, Jerry Barbee, Robert Few, Jim Barbee, and Jim McKee.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herman Barbee; one daughter, Genelle Barbee; one brother, Jay and an infant brother.
She is survived by two daughters, Kay Wiles of Muskogee, Ludene Roberts and husband, Roy of Checotah; one son, Randy Barbee and wife, Jeanie of Maysville; one brother, James Edwards and wife, Sue of Cushing, 9 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Ollie Mae Boren
Ollie Mae Boren, 98, of Talihina, Okla., was born July 18, 1899 in Culman, Ala. to G.W. and Nancy Elizabeth Tolbert. She passed away Feb. 3, 1998 at the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center, Poteau.
She had been living in the Talihina area since 1904. She was a member of the Talihina First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dolph in 1972; sons, Arlie and Troy; one daughter, Jimmie Nell Boren Cecil, and five grandchildren.
He is survived by his two sons, Tom Boren of Talihina, and Roy Boren of Whitesboro; three daughters, Wilma Conley of Wilburton, Dolphia Brewer of Falfa, and Lois Sheperd of Rogers, AR; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; numerous friends and other loved ones.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 1998 at the Old Talihina City Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Frank Conley, Joe Conley, Randy Conley, Robbie Boren, Larry Boren, Olin B. Brewer.
Aubra W. Dees
Our beloved father, Aubra W. Dees, went to be with the lord on Jan. 31, 1998 n Sequim, WA. He was born on April 23, 1906 in Gravelly, Ark.
Aubra was a longtime resident of Kittitas Valley, moving from Poteau, Okla. in 1942 with his wife, Nellie and six of his 9 children.
He retired from Kittitas County Road Department as shop foreman in Dec. of 1968.
Aubra is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Dale Paddock of Sequim, WA., Oletta and Lloyd Osborn of Gig Harbor, WA., Eulene Ensley of Juneau, AK, Audrey and Russ McKeever of Sun City, AZ, and Joyce Dees of Juneau, AK; sons and daughters-in-law, Aubra d. and Cheryl Dees of Soldotna, AK., Darrel Dees of Ellensburg, WA, Joe and Sandy Dees of Ellensburg, WA, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Dees, his parents, John Robert and Mollie Dees, a daughter, Edna Mae Dees, son-in-law, Gene Ensley, and his brothers and sisters.
Viewing was Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Stewart and Williams Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 at 1 p.m. at Steward and Williams Chapel 301 E. 3rd Ave. in Ellensburg, WA. Pastor Albert E. Anderson will be officiating. concluding service and burial will be held at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Ellensburg.
If desired memorials may be made to Kittitas Valley community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 1031, Ellensburg, WA 98926, to be utilized in nursing services.
You were so special to us and will be greatly missed.
Katie Hulsey
Katie Hulsey, 85, of Stigler, Okla., was born Aug. 26, 1912 in St. Joe, Ark. to John Crittenton and Dora Bell (Ragle) Newport. She died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 in a local hospital in Stigler.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 at the Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Okla. under the direction of the Mallory Funeral Home, Stigler.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Herman in 1964 and one son, Phillip Eddie Hulsey in 1992. She was a retired Avon Representative in the counties surrounding Stigler, and District Manager for Southwest Arkansas. She owned and operated several restaurants in Stigler and Keota. She moved into the Senior Apartments in Stigler 25 years ago.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Patricia Hulsey of Tulsa; one son, John B. Hulsey and wife, Hazel of Oregon; one sister, Edna Newport Snow of Tulsa; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lequire Fire Department.
Grace A. Sheets
Grace A. Sheets, 94 year old former Woodward, Okla. resident, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998 in Loveland, Colo. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 26, 1998 in the First United Methodist Church, Woodward. Billings Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Grace Alice (Korn) Sheets was born in Oklahoma Territory near Gage, Okla. on Nov. 18, 1903. She was the daughter of William and Alice Lizzie (Fauss) Korn. After college, Grace taught in elementary school. She was married to M.R. "Rex" Sheets on Sept. 23, 1933 in Wichita, Kan. They made their home in Alva, Okla. in 1934, they opened the Rex Variety Store in Carmen, Okla. They also made their home in the Shattuck, Okla. and Fargo, Okla. area before moving to Woodard in 1946. Rex preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1990. Grace moved to Loveland, Colo. in 1994.
She was a member of and attended the First Methodist Church of Woodward and attended the First United Methodist Church of Loveland.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Ronald R. Sheets and wife, Sharon of Loveland, Colo.; one daughter, Marilyn Johnston of Poteau; six grandchildren, Gregory Sheets and wife, Janet, Mark Sheets, all of Loveland, Colo., Jonathan Sheets and wife, Susan of Dallas, Tex., Linda Johnston of Owasso, Okla.; Cindy Woolbright and husband, Joe of St. Louis, Mo.; Donna Johnston of Tulsa; one great-granddaughter, Melanie Sheets of Loveland; one sister, Lela Hennigh of Darrouzett, Tex.; six sisters-in-law, Margaret Korn of Tonkawa, Okla., Mac Sheets of Indianapolis, Ind., Iva Sheets of Bethany, Okla., Freda Sheets of Lakin, Kan., Thelma Schneider of Woodard, Irene Sheets of Huntington, W.V.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Allie Smith
Allie Smith, 86, of Heavener, Okla., died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 in a Ft. Smith hospital. Allie Smith was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Baptist Faith.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998 at the Reichert Cemetery in Heavener under the direction of the Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by her son, Billy R. Smith and wife, Jeanette of Oklahoma City; one sister, Myra Burgess of Wister; two grandchildren, Stephanie Marie Eaton and husband, Lane of San Antonio, Tex., Bryan R. Smith and wife, Claudia of Tulsa; two great-grandchildren, Sandy and Kacey Eaton.
Allie Smith is preceded in death by one granddaughter, Suzanne Smith.
Rev. Otto Bergner
Memorial services for the Rev. Otto Bergner were 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16 in the First Presbyterian Church of Poteau with Rev. Bill Guillford and Rev. John Blue officiating. Private burial services will take place prior to the memorial service in the Oakland Cemetery.
The Rev. Otto Bergner was born in Pratt, KS on Feb. 2, 1904 and passed away on Feb. 12, 1998 in Ardmore, Okla. at the age of 94. He was the son of Chris and Geeske Bergner who migrated to the United States in 1892 from Germany. His mother and father, four brothers, and three sisters preceded him in death.
Otto graduated from Park College in Parkville, MO with a B.A. degree in 1928. He entered McCormick Seminary in Chicago, IL in 1928 and received his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1931.
He married Cleo Mae Huckstadt on Apr. 28, 1931. They had four children, Yvonne Gardner of Ardmore, David Bergner of Arlington, TX, Mark Bergner of Sand Springs and Paul Bergner of Yukon. He had 9 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
He began his ministry upon graduation in 1931 at a rural Presbyterian Church in Marseilles, IL, where he served for five years. In 1936 he was called to the Mission Fields of West Virginia. this was the coal fields and was known as the West Virginia project where he ministered for six years. In 1941 he was called to the First Presbyterian Church in Woodward where he served the next seven years. Seven years later, in 1948, he was called to the First Presbyterian Church in El Reno where he served 9 years. In 1958, he was called to the First Presbyterian Church of Midwest City where he retired in 1972 at the age of 68 years. He and Cleo moved to Poteau in 1972 where they have been spending their retirement years. During the first 12 years at Poteau, he served as minister of the First Presbyterian Church until he turned 80 years old, retired again, except for preaching two times a month at the small Presbyterian Church in Heavener until December 1995 at the age of 91.
Otto was very civic minded and was chosen "Man of the Year" in 1953 by the Chamber of Commerce in El Reno. He was a Rotarian in El Reno and Poteau, served on the Red Cross Committee in Poteau. He wrote a daily column for the Poteau Daily News & Sun, which was known as "A Word From Otto", which included many suggestions for a good life.
He enjoyed many hobbies, golf, fishing, bread making and making German sauerkraut. His bread making was featured in articles in The Daily Oklahoman, Tulsa World and the Poteau Daily News & Sun.
During the Presbyterian General Assembly of 1983, he sent his homemade bread which was used in the communion service.
Otto never preached over 20 minutes, he always said, "if I can't say it in 20 minutes, it is not worth saying."
He loved his family, church family, and all other friends - friendships he made over the years. He was a minister to all and will be missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Poteau.
Memorial services will be under the direction of the Griffin-Kennedy-Watts Funeral Home in Ardmore.
Boyce R. Brinkley
Boyce R. Brinkley, 42, of Bokoshe, Okla. was born April 22, 1955 in Tucson, AZ, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998 at his residence. He was a Technician.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998 at the New Hope Cemetery in Spiro with the Rev. Robert Hill.
He is survived by his wife, Robin of the home; two daughters, Leona and Cheyenne Brinkley of the home; his parents, Bob and Lois Brinkley of Spiro; one sister, Joyce Guest of Bokoshe; maternal grandfather, Ray Brown of Bokoshe; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones.

William Alford Cooley
William Alford Cooley, 93, of Agra, OK was born Sept. 29, 1904 at Waverly, TN. He passed away Feb. 23, 1998 at the Cushing Memorial Hospital, Cushing, OK. He was of the Protestant faith and had lived in the Agra area most of his life.
He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. He had been a farmer all of his life. He is preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Roy Cooley.
He is survived by his two daughters, Mary Ellen England of Talihina and Helen Elizabeth Perry of Tahlequah; one sister, Ruby King of Jenks; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; numerous friends and loved ones.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998 at the New Talihina City Cemetery with Rusty Shaw officiating.
Arrangements under the direction of the Drake-Jones Funeral Home, Talihina.
