Thalbert McCurtain
HEAVENER — Thalbert “Dude” McCurtain, 61, of Heavener died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in Fort Smith. He was a member of the Loving Baptist Church, a Vietnam veteran and a member of the LeFlore County Wolf Hunters Association.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Loving Baptist Church in Heavener, with burial at Loving Cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; one daughter, Candi Maiden of Heavener; his mother, Gladys McCurtain of Heavener; two sisters, Irene Davis of Hodgen, Okla., and Jimmie Kirby of Sulphur, Okla.; and one grandchild, Matthew Hudson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sandra Polasek
FALLS CITY, Texas — Sandra Elizabeth “Sandy” Polasek, 45, of Falls City, formerly of Sallisaw, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in Houston. She was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Clinton, Okla. She was a mail supervisor for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and was a Catholic.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at W.C. Teague Family Cemetery north of Sallisaw under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
She is survived by her husband, Mike; a daughter, Jackie Polasek of San Antonio; three sons, Jason, Jake and Josh Polasek, all of Falls City; her mother, Wynona Teague of Sallisaw; six sisters, Mary Teague, Judy Long, Debra Farris, Sheryl Risenhoover, Rhonda Copeland and Abby Stites, all of Sallisaw; three brothers, Rock, Calvin and Clifton Teague, all of Sallisaw; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Rocky, Calvin and Clifton Teague, Mike Stites, Garland Farris Jr. and Larry Long.

Bettis Hargrove
TULSA — Bettis Lee Hargrove, 77, of Tulsa died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in Tulsa. He was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Mulberry. He was retired from Texaco as a carpenter, a Methodist, past adult leaders in Boys Scouts, a member of the Retiree’s Club of Texaco.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at University United Methodist Church in Tulsa with burial at Mulberry Cemetery in Mulberry under the direction of Moore’s Funeral Homes Eastlawn Chapel in Tulsa.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Veda Williamson of Tulsa; two sons, Barry Hargrove of Coweta, Okla. and David Hargrove of Tulsa; a sister, Margarett Lasey of Fort Smith; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Oha Reams
MABELVALE — Oha Ellen Reams, 94, of Mabelvale, formerly of Sallisaw, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in Perryville. She was born March 10, 1910, in Stone County. She was a homemaker, a member of Pleasant Valley Church in Sallisaw and the widow of Donald Reams.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Sallisaw with burial at Buffington Cemetery in Sallisaw.
She is survived by a son, Cicero Ramsey of Mabelvale; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

JoEllen Queen
HOWE — JoEllen Queen, 72, of Howe died Friday, July 16, 2004, in Poteau. She was a longtime resident of the area was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith. She was the widow of Clifford Queen.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Loving Cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Young of Glendale, Okla., and Jody Hall of Howe; a sister, Jean Cloyes of Bald Knob; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Georgia Tate
HEAVENER — Georgia Tate, 74, of Heavener died Friday, July 16, 2004, in Poteau. She was a longtime resident of Heavener and a member of the First Christian Church, where she was the church organist for 56 years and Sunday school teacher for 50 years, and the Heavener Women’s Club. She was a member of the Board of Regents of Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Okla., for 16 years, serving as president of the board for 14 years. She was president of the Heavener Library Board and a board member of the Christian Church Foundation, serving for 12 years. She received the Heritage Award from the state of Oklahoma in June 2003.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Heavener with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.
She is survived by her husband, Neil; two daughters, Johanna Moretti of Stillwater, Okla., and Eulalia Click of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Father Robert Mark Tate of Portland, Ore., and Neil Carter Tate of Memphis; a brother, Dr. Donald Carter of Oklahoma City; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church Memorial Fund, Heavener.

Charles Copeland
TOPEKA, Kan. — Charles Michael Copeland, 54, of Topeka, Kan., died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Topeka. He was born Jan. 7, 1950, in Heavener. He was a printer and an Army veteran of the Vietnam era.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Howe Cemetery in Howe under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
He is survived by a son, Christopher Copeland of Wister; his mother, Margie of Heavener; a sister, Sharon Schrodt of Heavener; two brothers, John Copeland of Tulsa and James Copeland of Broken Arrow, Okla.

Opaline Nixon
Opaline Nixon, 71, of Oklahoma passed away Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Fort Smith under the care of the Peachtree Hospice Unit. She was born Nov. 12, 1932, in Rison. She worked in central supply departments at Ventura County Medical Center in California and at Sparks Regions Medical Center in Fort Smith, where she retired in 1996.
Opal grew up in Arkansas and moved to Tennessee, where she met and married her beloved husband, Ertis Nixon. They were happily married for 47 years. She and Ertis loved to bowl together where they had some wonderful friends.
She is survived by her four children, son Gary Nixon and wife Diana of Van Buren, daughter Diana Lewis and husband Bob of Southern, Calif., daughter Gladys Mayer of Bakersfield, Calif., and Ronnie Jean Nixon of Milford, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Opal has four sisters, Rose Holcomb and husband Tommy of Senatobia, Miss., Alice Edwards of Trenton, Fla., Dorothy Delahunt of Senastien, Fla., and Annie Bravan and husband Jimmy of Walls, Miss.; and one brother, Donald Edwards and wife Sharon of Longemont, Colo.
Private services will be held by Edwards Funeral Home and burial will be private at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
The family of Opal Nixon wishes to thank Edwards Funeral Home for their kindness and assistance with completion of their mother’s wishes.

James Harbuck
HEAVENER — James R. “Ruben” Harbuck, 92, of Heavener died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in Heavener. He was a graduate of Yuba High School near Durant, Okla., and served four years in the Marines, being recalled and serving in China until being discharged with rheumatic fever. He was a disabled veteran recovering from his illness and worked in an aircraft plant in Tulsa during World War II. He was a farmer and rancher and served as a law enforcement officer with the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office and the Heavener Police Department. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Heavener Masonic Lodge, a deacon and member of the Perry Chapel Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was the widower of Maxine Harbuck.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
He is survived by a daughter, Melissa Clubb of Fort Smith; two sons, Jim Harbuck of Oologah, Okla., and Joe Harbuck of Poteau; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jean Roop
SHREVEPORT, La. — Jean Laverne Roop, 73, of Shreveport, La., formerly of Heavener, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004. She was born Nov. 20, 1930, in Zoe, Okla.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Loving Baptist Church with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by her husband, James; a daughter, Donna Perkins; two sons, David and Danny Roop; and a brother, Glen Lynch.

E.C. Baucom
HEAVENER — E.C. “Skinny” Baucom, 97, of Heavener died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, in Poteau. He was a member of the Howe Missionary Baptist Church, the project manager of the pavilion at Memorial Park Cemetery, and the widower of Jean Baucom.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Howe Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
He is survived by a daughter, Annis Bebermeyer of Heavener; two sons, Gene Baucom of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Joe Baucom of Webber Falls, Okla.; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

John Wood
MENA, AR — John William “J.W.” Wood, 88, of Mena, AR, formerly of Heavener, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in a local nursing home. He was born Jan. 12, 1916. He served in the Army and was the widower of Linda Wood.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Glendale Cemetery in Wister under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by a daughter, Carol Nardo of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sons, Jerry Wood of Wolf Creek, Ore., and Larry Wood of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; a sister, Christine Alexander of Flat Rock, Mich.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Jean Nichols
HOWE — Jean Walter Nichols, 63, of Howe died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Muskogee, Okla. She was a member of the Hodgen First Baptist Church and served in the Army as a registered nurse in the Vietnam era. She enlisted on June 30, 1962, and was honorably discharged on Dec. 20, 1963.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hodgen First Baptist Church with burial at Mountain View Cemetery in the Glendale community under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Lugo of Ardmore, Okla., and Alice Gonzales of Lubbock, Texas; her mother, Grace Walter of Howe; four sisters, Betty Van Pelt of Howe, Sharon Earls of Heavener, Diann Pebsworth of Goodwell, Okla., and Rebecca Higgins of Max Creek, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.

Michael Ross Kruithof
Michael Ross Kruithof was born in Wichita, Kan., on April 27, 1983, to Dean and Cynthia Kruithof. He lived in Stillwater, Okla., and DeKalb, Ill., before moving to Fort Smith with his family in 1999. He graduated from Southside High School in 2001. Ross was currently working toward a degree in hotel and restaurant administration at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He would have begun his senior year next month. He was a member of the Club Managers Association of America and had represented OSU at various trade shows and career fairs. He was a talented artist and had won several awards for his drawings. He loved music, loved to travel and had hoped to someday live in Colorado.
In addition to his parents, Ross is survived by his brother, Marshall.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.

Curtis Keaton
Curtis Clifton Keaton, 73, of Van Buren died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Morris, Okla. He was a self-employed logger, a member of God’s Harvest Pentecostal Church of Alma and an evangelist.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at God’s Harvest Pentecostal Church in Alma with burial at Rankin Cemetery in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; four daughters, Nelda Keaton of Conway, Cheri Teague of Greenwood, Mary Woods of Russellville and Diana Powers of Roland; three sons, James Keaton of Dennison, Texas, Robert Keaton of Texas City, Texas, and Alvin Isham of Muskogee, Okla.; a brother, Clifford Keaton of Ozark; 25 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Chris Sullivan, Billy, Brian and Gabriel Woods, and Steven Long.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
