SALLISAW — Charles A. Welch, 86, of Sallisaw died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was a postman in Sallisaw for 30 years.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vian Garden of Memories under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by his wife, Avanel; a daughter, Jeree Phillips of Stillwater; a son, Charles Welch of Pryor, Okla.; a brother, Joe Welch of Sallisaw; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The body may be viewed from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Aaron Standridge
POTEAU — Aaron I. Standridge, 81, of Poteau died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in Poteau. He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Copeland. He was a truck driver, a farmer, an Army veteran of World War II and the widower of Lila Standridge.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Evans & Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau.
He is survived by five daughters, June Thomas of Choctaw, Okla., Wilma Metzker of Heavener, Brenda Griffin of Stilwell, Okla., Loretta Gibson of Summerfield and Sherrie Standridge of Poteau; a son, Mike Standridge of Poteau; two sisters, Wilcie Harrison of Poteau and Hessie Dorsett of California; 16 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Aaron D. and Jerry Standridge, Michael Standridge Jr., Clay Metzker, Jimmy Thomas, Jason and Justin Greb and Glenn Griffin.

Vernon Rea
SALLISAW — Vernon J. Rea, 72, of Sallisaw, formerly of Poteau, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in Sallisaw. He was born April 19, 1932, in San Antonio. He was a Navy veteran, serving in Korea and Vietnam, was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a member of United Pentecostal Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Evans & Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Donna Hendrix of Seattle; a brother, Coy Rea of Bethany, Okla.; four stepchildren; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ron Bledsoe, Jeff Spear, Norman Johnson, Eddie Martin, Ralph Marsh and Larry Lovejoy.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Arla L. Gabbard
Arla L. Gabbard, 78, of Sallisaw died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Sallisaw. He was born June 9, 1926, in Paris. He retired in 1982 as district manager from Arkansas Oklahoma Gas after 34 years, a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Sallisaw, he also worked at Eastside Baptist Church, Sallisaw Headstart and Brushy School System. He was a 32nd degree Mason and had been active in the Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing and reading.
Funeral will be 1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Eastside Baptist Church in Sallisaw with burial at Brushy Cemetery north of Sallisaw under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by his wife, Madge of the home; two daughters, Jeanne Cook and Cassandra Stone, both of Elgin, Okla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Glenda Gabbard of Elgin, Okla.; three grandchildren, Jason D. Cook and his wife, Kati of Oklahoma City, Travis Gabbard of Elgin, Okla., and Karen Melinda Gabbard of Elgin, Okla.; one great-grandchild, Rylee Cook of Oklahoma City; and one brother, Avie Gabbard of Fort Smith.
Preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Daisy Mae (Hooper) Gabbard; and by one son, Patrick Arla Gabbard.
Pallbearers: Troy Kelley, Russell Atterberry, Shannon Pruitt, Charlie Ford, Bill Wilson and Carl Cook.
The body may be viewed 1 to 9 p.m. today at Agent Funeral Home in Sallisaw.

LaVern Peterson
SPIRO — LaVern “Pete” Peterson, 64, of Spiro died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was a member of the Spiro Baptist Church, Oklahoma Band Masters Association, MENC and several coin associations. He was named Citizen of the Year in Spiro in 1976 and 1991. He had many students in the EOBDA honor bands and in all-district bands.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Spiro First Baptist Church with burial at Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by his wife, Vernetta; two sons, Steven Peterson of Spiro and Kevin Peterson of Muldrow; his parents, Laurence and Rachel Peterson of Newton, Kan.; two sisters, Arlene Hamnn of California and Marilynn Spielman of Topeka, Kan.; two brothers, Jesse Peterson of Kansas City, Mo., and Danny Peterson of Savanna, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be David Kerns, Alan Lawson, Mark Cox, Ray Votaw, Ronnie Parent and David Lincoln.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Vernon Looper
SALLISAW — Vernon Melvin “Buddy” Looper, 86, of Sallisaw died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was born July 16, 1918, in Greenwood. He was a retired self-employed carpenter, a Freewill Baptist and a veteran of World War II.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Assembly of God in Sallisaw with burial at Sallisaw City Cemetery under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Verna Norrid of Sallisaw; a son, Richard Looper of Sallisaw; five sisters, Geneva Compton, Joyce Colon, Kathy Freeman, Rosa Scott and Noreen Diahl; four brothers, Hosea, Charles, Alexander and Glennis Looper; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Shane Norrid, Kyle and Kody Looper, Gary Springwater, Ben Storie and Tim Watts.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today.
The family will visit with friends from 9 a.m. to noon today.

Lewis Burcham
MULDROW — Lewis Edward Burcham, 75, of Muldrow died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Muldrow. He was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Muldrow. He was retired from Desoto Furniture Manufacturing and the Muldrow Public Schools Maintenance Department and was a member of First Assembly of God in Muldrow.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God in Muldrow with burial at Drake Stand Cemetery in Sallisaw under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Muldrow.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; three daughters, Kathy Snow and Calessia Miller, both of Muldrow, and Debbie Jackman of Ponca City, Okla.; two sisters, Oma White of Vian and Sue Stormes of Roland; three brothers, Billy Burcham of Roland and Jimmy Burcham of Fort Smith; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Snow, Terry Jackman, Howard Miller, Eddie Webb, Steve White and Arthur Wooten.
The body will be present in a closed casket from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Billy Qualls
POTEAU — Billy J. Qualls, 71, of Poteau died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was born June 3, 1933, in Poteau. He was a nursing home administrator, a horse trainer and an Air Force veteran.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; four daughters, Stacy Gaston of St. Jo, Texas, Shelta Ivins of Tulahoma, Tenn., Sherri Clark of Quitman, Texas, and Treca Baetz of Dallas; a son, Steve Qualls of Merkel, Texas; two sisters, Twila Robinon and Sada Sole, both of Poteau; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Russell Cariker
PORUM, Okla. — Russell Ervin Cariker, 59, of Porum died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Laramie, Wyo.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Stigler with burial at Brooken Cemetery in the Brooken community.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva; a daughter, Tina Harrison of Sallisaw; two sons, Jimmy Cariker of Porum and Rusty Cariker of Tahlequah, Okla.; his mother, Virginia Carlton of Sallisaw; a sister, Karen Hurst of Sallisaw; a brother, C.W. Cariker of Drumright, Okla.; and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Leon and Audy Webster, Tommy Fletcher, Holland Smith, Mark Mosley, Mike Benson and Steve Duke.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home.

Roy Collier
MOORE, Okla. — Roy Collier, 94, of Moore died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005.
Graveside service will be noon Tuesday at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home of Moore.

Bula Fay Shelly
Bula Fay Shelly, 63, of Kibler died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in her home. She was a lifelong resident of Crawford County. She attended Jubilee Christian Center and enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She was preceded in death by her parents, Houston and Clara Adams Casey; and a sister, Melissa McGuire.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Sarah Grove Cemetery in Cedarville under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by her husband, Leon Shelly of the home; three daughters, Debbie Woodard and Karen Curran, both of Van Buren, and Kathy Franklin of Greenwood; two sons, Ronny Shelly and Keven Shelly, both of Van Buren; a sister, Minnie Rouse of Piggott; seven grandchildren, Ginger McGhee, Clayton Curran, Eric Shelly, Billy Curran and Katee Curran, all of Van Buren, Chad McGehee of Fort Smith, and Kristan Kling of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be David Still, Clifford Watson, Bill McFadden, Ray McFadden, Benny Shelly and Robert Blasingame.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson in Van Buren.

Carl David Barnett
Carl David Barnett, 71, of Spiro died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired first sergeant in the Army, a veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars and a special weapons instructor. He also was retired from Fort Chaffee. He was a member of Haven Heights Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Mansfield with burial at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Barnett of the home; three daughters, Wanda Coker and husband Keith of Fort Smith, and Linda Pelton and husband George and Christina Harper and husband Scott, all of Spiro; two sons, Charles Barnett and wife Jane and Roger Barnett and wife Teresa, all of Spiro; his mother, LaOra Barnett of Greenwood; three sisters, Leta Stanley and Margaret Mack, both of Mansfield, and Deanie Pogue of Evansville; three brothers, Elzie Barnett of Mansfield, Johnny Barnett of Waldron and Tommy Barnett of El Paso, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Brian and Tiffany Barnett, Ethan Coker, Christopher Pelton, Jeffery Ireland, and Zackary and Skylar Harper.
Pallbearers will be brothers of Haven Heights Baptist Church.

Claude Bennett
WISTER — Claude “Sam” Bennett, 83, of Wister died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Poteau. He was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Glendale, Okla. He was in the lumber and sawmill business, he attended Ellis Chapel Church and was the widower of Polly Bennett.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ellis Chapel Church in Wister with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Velma; a daughter, Sherry Hayes of Poteau; a son, Sam Bennett of Wister; two stepchildren, James Martindale and Dana Drury, both of Wister; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
