Myra Lucille Burleson

Myra Lucille Burleson passed away peacefully after a long illness at her Altus home on May 18, 2006. Myra was born on November 26, 1919 and grew up in St. Louis, MO. After graduating from Kirkland High School in St. Louis, she attended business college and worked after graduation until she married the only man she ever loved, her husband of sixty-two years, Aaron C. Burleson.

In 1942, after being activated for World War II, Myra met her future husband while he was in Army Air Corps pilot training at Parks Air College, East St. Louis, Mo. Cadet Burleson completed his training at Pampa Air Field and married Myra immediately after graduation on April 15, 1944. Myra returned home to St. Louis until Lt. Burleson returned home from World War II. While she lovingly raised their three children Barbara, Chris and Debbie; Myra assumed her new role as an officer’s wife with the same enthusiasm, support and grace which she maintained the thirty plus years her husband was in the U.S. Air Force.

The Burleson’s lived in the Washington D.C. area for sixteen years where Col. Burleson was assigned to the Office of the Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force where his duties required that he set up flights for the President, foreign Heads of State, Cabinet Members, Senators and Congressmen. This position afforded Myra the opportunity to experience a truly rewarding and unique social life. In 1970, Col. Burleson was assigned to Altus AFB as Vice-Commander and Base Commander until his retirement in 1974. Myra built their retirement home in Heritage Estates where they have lived for thirty-two active years. Even though retired from the Air Force, Myra continued to support her husband as he became Director of Military Development for Altus with her same enthusiasm and entertained many military visitors to Altus.

In addition to her role as a military wife, Myra loved to sew and tailored many of her own clothes, she became a china painter, and enjoyed handwork and cooking. She especially enjoyed traveling the world and OU football, both of which she enjoyed with her husband at her side. The greatest love of her life was her husband of sixty plus years and also her family and friends and her church, Prince of Peace Catholic Church. She was an active member of many officer’s wives clubs, bridge clubs, and the Clonian Club.

After 2002 she required around-the-clock caregivers whose dedication and service to Myra made them truly 'part of the family.' A team of caregivers was required, led Dr. Joe Leverett and Gracie Ramirez of Mangum. In addition, she received excellent and compassionate care from, among others, Trinity Hospice.

Myra is survived by her husband, Aaron C. Burleson, and one son, two daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Chris Burleson and his wife, Jolly, of Norman and their daughter Tiffany, Barbara Burleson, of Altus and her children Charles L. “Chad” McLawhorn, III and his wife Tracy of Oklahoma City, and Melissa McLawhorn Houston and husband Ben of Norman their sons, Robert Aaron “Robby” and Matthew, Debbie Burleson, of Norman and her daughters, Katie Kahmann and her daughter, Julia of Oklahoma City, and Beth and Kelly Kahmann of Norman. Myra was preceded in death by her grandson, Aaron Christopher Burleson, her parents, Alex and Anne Hosch and her only sibling, Roslyn Berry of St. Louis.

Myra lived her life with grace, wit, laughter, thoughtfulness and love. She will be affectionately remembered as a wonderful wife, a loving mother, a caring grandmother, a thoughtful friend, a gracious hostess and an exceptional spirit. She will be missed by all those who were blessed to have Myra touch their lives.

A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1500 Falcon Rd, Altus, OK with Fr. Joe Arledge officiating.
