Dr. W.C. Dobbs

Dr. W.C. Dobbs passed away Sunday, November 25 in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Dobbs was a 42 year resident of Mobile, and professor Emeritus of the University of Mobile.

W.C. Dobbs was born in Altus, OK to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Dobbs, long time Altus residents, on December 17, 1916. Dr. Dobbs devoted his life to the pursuit of knowledge, the gospel ministry, and the sharing of those two passions with all he knew. A prolific speaker, lecturer, orator and preacher, Dr. Dobbs began his speaking career as a member of the National Debate Championship Team in 1934. After high school graduation he began his preparation to God’s call on his life. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University, attained his B.A. degree from Baylor University as well as graduate studies, and earned his doctorate degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His first pastorate was First Baptist Church, Valley Mills, Texas where he met the church pianist and love of his life, Jeanette Lawrence, his precious wife of sixty-seven years, who survives him. Together they ministered to churches in Texas, Kentucky, and Illinois. He served as President of the Illinois Baptist State Association and member of the Stewardship Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Dr. Dobbs served his country as an Army Chaplain during World War II and instilled in his children and students a deep love of country and responsibility to it. Known as the “pastor’s pastor” because of his deep empathy and love for other pastor’s, Dr. Dobbs shifted his sphere of influence to teaching on the college level where hundreds of prospective ministers passed through his classes during his 19 year tenure as Professor of Religion at University of Mobile. His love of the scriptures, the original Greek language, and noble thinking impacted all who sat under his voice. During these years he filled the pulpit of many churches in the Mobile area, the state of Alabama, and across the south. Having a reputation as a preacher with the “mind of a scholar and the fire of an evangelist,” he maintained an active preaching ministry until physically unable. Dr. Dobbs’ legacy will humbly, with great desire and hope, be carried on by his family. His son, W.C. Dobbs, Jr. and wife, Betty, reside in Mobile. Susan Dobbs Nations and her husband, Glen, live in Tampa, and LeAnne Dobbs Clay and her husband, David, reside in Palmyra, Virginia. From these unions Dr. Dobbs enjoyed the love and devotion of eight grandchildren: WC Dobbs, III “Clabe” and Holly, Leah Dobbs Black and Nathan, Rachel Dobbs, Lance Nations and Linda, Grant Nations and Christy, Paige Nations Code and Jordan, Erin Clay Ulrich and Steve, and Parker Clay. And the joy and light of his heart were his great-grandchildren: WC Dobbs, IV “Will”, Hope and Wes Dobbs, Gabriella Black; Jordan, Kalen and Kiley Nations; Jackson and Carson Nations; Wes Ulrich and one yet unborn. All were lovingly and faithfully supported, encouraged and prayed for by their grandfather.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2007 on Hi-Point Farm, 4 miles East of Blair, Oklahoma: the place of Dr. Dobbs’ beginning. Memorials may be made to the Dobbs Scholarship Fund at University of Mobile, 5735 College Parkway, Mobile, AL 36613-2842. We enjoy and rejoice in the home going of this amazing man of God who believed with all his heart and lived the truth that “to live for me is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Horace Harold Doughty

Horace Harold Doughty, 90, of Altus passed away Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Margie VanOostrum officiating. Burial with military honors will follow services at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

He was born in Martha, Oklahoma, on August 27, 1916, the first son of Horace and Mattie Doughty, a pioneer farming family. He was one of six children. As was the routine in those days, he helped with the family farming while attending school in Martha. He graduated high school in Martha in 1933 and enrolled in the University of Oklahoma. He has often said that he wanted to go to Oklahoma A & M, however hitchhiking rides was much easier to the shorter distance. Harold received a Bachelor of Business in Accounting in 1937 and found a job working for Clayton Huckaby at his bank in Mountain Park. He operated the movie theater in the evenings after working at the bank during the day. Subsequently he moved to Shawnee and took a job at the Federal National Bank of Shawnee in 1940. While in Shawnee, he met Velma Kendall, who was working for a local Savings and Loan company, and they married on August 10, 1941. At the outbreak of World War II, Harold joined the Army-Air Corps. He became a staff sergeant and shipped out to North Africa. His tour of duty took him to North Africa, Italy, Miami Beach, and Washington D.C. Upon returning from military service, he moved his new bride to Altus in 1946 and joined his father working at the Martha State Bank in Martha, Oklahoma. He built a long respected career in Southwest Oklahoma banking from that date. He continued to farm land that he had acquired over the next several decades. In 1958, at the age of 42, he was instrumental in moving the Martha State Bank charter to Altus, Oklahoma, - the present location of First State Bank of Altus. His business career took him into many community and business positions including: President of the Altus Chamber of Commerce in 1964; President of the Kiwanis Club in 1967; Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in 1976-1977; Member of the Bankers Bank Board of Directors from 1987 to 1993; and many others. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. He published a book in conjunction with the Western Trail Historical Society in 2000 “Grandpa’s Safe, Ninety Years of Compound Interests”. The book is an excellent source of many of the individuals that touched his life throughout his ninety years. It is ironic that the title of the book corresponds with his age!

Mr. Doughty was preceded in death by his brother, Nelson Doughty; two sisters, Maurine Sessions and Maebelle Menard; a brother-in-law, Jimmie Fontana and a sister-in-law, Natalie Doughty. Along with Velma, his wife of 65 years, he helped raise two Altus boys, Steve and Paul Doughty. He is survived by his wife Velma of the home,; his son, Steve Doughty of Plano, Texas; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jane Doughty of Altus; 5 grandchildren: Gary and Cara Doughty of Houston, Texas; Mark Doughty of Houston, Texas; Kendall Doughty of Altus; Steve Wilson of Houston, Texas; and Shelby and Corey Woods of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; a brother, Kenneth Doughty of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a sister, Naomi Fontana of Altus; 4 great grand kids; and a multitude of nephews and nieces scattered all over the United States.
