Treadway

Kola Verise Treadway, 101, of Hollis died Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Colonial Manor I Nursing Home in Hollis.

Kola was born Dec. 2, 1903, in Harmon County to Adoniram Judson and Dora Alice (Tice) Abernathy. She married Cecil Treadway Aug. 10, 1921 in Hollis. Kola and Cecil lived in the Teacross community from shortly after they married until 1946 when they moved to the LaCasa community. In 1953, Kola and Cecil moved to Hollis. Kola was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and loved to cook, sew and spend a lot of time with her grandchildren. Kola was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Hollis.

Kola is survived by two daughters, Bobbie Sims of Hollis, and Dorothy "Dot" Dyess of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren, Toni Hibbard and husband Maurice of Altus, Randy Sims and wife Lisa of Pauls Valley, Robbie Holder and husband Danny of Gould, Ricky Upton and wife Debbie, Brad Upton and wife Trudy, all of Amarillo and Jody Upton and wife Toni of Canyon, Texas; nine great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Kola was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cecil Treadway on March 11, 1985; two sisters, Nettie Ware and Annie Owens and one brother, Randall Abernathy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Patterson Greer Chapel with Reverend Hoyt Ellis officiating. Interment will follow at McKnight Cemetery north of Hollis under the direction of Patterson Greer Funeral Home.

McCaslan

Elsie McCaslan, longtime Jackson County resident, died Thursday at Plantation Village Nursing Home. Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at the Blair Cemetery with Pastor Dick Chapman officiating. Services are under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home.

Elsie was born in Tishomingo to Hattan and Belle (Johnson) Allen and moved at an early age to Jackson County. She attended school at Ozark and was a graduate of Warren High School. She married Alva Hayes McCaslan in Vernon, Texas in 1945 and two daughters were born to this union. Elsie was a homemaker most of her life. She was devoted to her family and was an excellent seamstress.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Herman Allen, Willard Allen and Dillard Allen, three sisters, Lona Inklebarger, Lucille Allen and Coleen Norton, and a great-grandson.

Survivors include her daughters Jo Ann Patterson and husband Mike of Altus; Dixie Cummins and husband Gary of Altus; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Virginia McCaslan of Cushing; a brother-in-law Lew Runion of Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters-in-law, Oleta Allen and Myrtle Allen of Altus and Othalene McCaslan of Tipton, Calif.; grandchildren, Chris Cummins, Tiffany Willis and Liz Tovar of Altus, Brad Patterson of Weatherford and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Sherrill

Rufus L. Sherrill, 90, of Vinson, died Thursday Dec. 9, 2004 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.

Rufus was born April 16, 1914 in Lone Wolf to William Rufus and Cora Emmaline (Copelin) Sherrill. He married Ruby Withers in October of 1932 and they had four children. Rufus grew up in Kiowa County near Lone Wolf and at the age of 15, moved to Vinson. He was a farmer and rancher and loved to fish. He made his profession of faith in 1946. Rufus served on the Vinson School Board and was active on many other boards and committees including 27 years on the Vinson Gin Board, three years on the Farm Bureau Board, 17 years on the Farm Community Committee, 12 years on the County Farm Committee (ASC), and three years on the Greenbelt Electric Board. He was a faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene in Hollis.

Rufus was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Ruby in 2001, his second wife Buna in 2003, three brothers, Marion Benjamin Sherrill, Charles Sherrill and Ralph Sherrill, and two sisters, Florence Groseclose and Ruby Mauldin.

Rufus is survived by his daughters, Lufern Dalke and husband Dan of Altus, Dona Lewis and husband Jack of Amarillo, Texas, Rhonda Piersd husband Wayne of Amarillo, Texas; his son Bill Sherrill and wife Leona of Vinson; a sister, Luetta Emmaline Gifford of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Danny Dalke, Mark Dalke, Candy Marshall, Craig Lewis, Bart Sherrill, Bret Sherrill, Kerrie Pierson and Tony Pierson; and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at the Church of the Nazarene in Hollis, with Rev. Jim Fishback officiating. Interment will follow at Cave Creek Cemetery in Vinson under the direction of Patterson Greer Funeral Home of Hollis.

Parks

Nita Joyce Kirby Parks, 65, Altus, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at her home in Altus. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at the Kincannon Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Bill Osborne officiating. Burial will follow services at the Victory Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral home.

She was born on Oct. 5, 1939, in Altus to Lloyd and Beatrice (Logan) Kirby. She graduated from Olustee High School and continued her education at Draughn's Business School in Wichita Falls, Texas. She married Allie Parks on Feb. 2, 1961, in Vernon, Texas. She worked for many years at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in admissions and records, the switchboard and the emergency room. She also worked for some time at the Roosevelt School. She was a member of the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ, enjoyed crochet, arts and crafts, baseball and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her father in July 1982, her mother in September 2003 and her husband in June 2004.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Kerry VanCleave, Altus; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Hiede Parks, Frisco, Texas; Darrell and Stacie Parks, Sante Fe, N.M.; Randall and Melissa Parks, Lubbock, Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Larry Osborne, Tipton; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Laverne Kirby, Anadarko; 10 grandchildren, Misty VanCleave, Topeka, Kan.; Stormy VanCleave, Vernon, Texas; Rainey VanCleave, Altus; Trevor, Kevin and Dwight Parks, Travis and Nicole Case, all of Frisco; Austin and Meranda Parks, both of Lubbock; a great-grandson, Gavin Parks of Frisco; and many friends.

Gilliam

Alene Fern Gilliam, 87, formerly of Mangum, died Dec. 3, 2004, in Norman. She was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Harmon County near Gould to Richard and Susie Duncan of Mangum.

Alene graduated from Gould High School in 1937 and married Howard Gilliam of Mangum on March 19, 1938. Howard and Alene lived in and around the Mangum area for the majority of their lives where he worked for the post office, farmed and operated small businesses. They moved to Princeton, Texas, in 1986 where Howard preceded her in death on January 19, 1994. Alene moved to Norman in 2001.

Alene loved to sew, crochet, knit and make dolls. She made scores of dolls for her children and grandchildren and had literally dozens of her dolls displayed in her home. She enjoyed playing board games and dominoes; always finding time for a game with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by four children, Allen Gilliam of Princeton, Texas, Dwain Gilliam of Van Alstyne, Texas, Karen Heartsill of Norman and Sharon Campbell of Norman. She has nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She has one living sister, Imogene Olive of Mangum and was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Services were set for 2 p.m. today at the Greer Funeral Home Chapel in Mangum. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Boys officiating. Arrangements are with Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.

Powell

Joyce Lynn Powell , 83, of Blair, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at English Village Manor in Altus. She was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Fate, Texas, to Benton Leon and Mary Jo (Chambers) Powell.

Joyce had lived in the Jackson County area since 1950, moving here from Levelland, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church in Altus.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Sandra Gail Powell.

She is survived by one sister, Virginia Sue St. Clair of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; two brothers, Jack Keith Powell and wife Joy of Clinton, David Powell and wife Laverne of Blair. She is also survived by a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Altus City Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Brown officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Grittman

Marilyn Gay Grittman, 37, of Altus, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service for Marilyn Grittman will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Emannuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Boyd Whitehead officiating, under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Marilyn Grittman was born Jan. 31, 1967, at Fort Stockton, Texas, to Clifton (Sonny) Grittman and Sharon (Glenn) Grittman. She attended Stockton High School and Abilene High School. She also attended Odessa Community College. She worked as a C.N.A. for Grace Living Center and English Village Nursing Home. She enjoyed reading and arts and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Gene and Belle Grittman, and Roy and Christine Glenn; and an uncle, Morris Glenn.

She is survived by her daughter, Alison Grittman-Tischler, and a son, Chase Grittman; her parents, Sonny and Sharon Grittman of Altus; two sisters, Kristi O'Neal and her husband, Andy of Altus, Dora Tischler and her husband, Robert of Altus; an aunt, Alexi Glenn of Fort Stockton, Texas; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Higgs

Sharron Annette Higgs, a loving wife, caring mother and generous spirit died on Dec. 3, 2004, in Oklahoma City at the age of 54. Sharron was best known for her unyielding devotion in all facets of life, including her marriage of 34 years to Gary Higgs and proudly raising her two sons Kevin W. Higgs and Kyle W. Higgs. Her giving nature went far beyond her family, however, from years of volunteering at Ridgeview and Will Rogers Elementary schools to her faithful membership at Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City.

Born on April 8, 1950, in Dumas, Texas to Lewis P. and Germa Lee (Brinkman) Roberts, Sharron grew up in Altus and graduated from Altus High School in 1968. She went on to graduate from Altus Junior College in 1970 and Southwestern Oklahoma State, earning a degree in Home Economics in 1972.

From her schooldays to establishing a life and family in Oklahoma City, Sharron made a lasting impression on all the lives she touched. She always enjoyed exploring her creativity in the time she spent on arts and crafts, quilting, decorating, and gardening, but more than anything enjoyed giving her creations away. With thoughtful gestures both large and small, Sharron never tired in bringing happiness to others. Most recently blessed with her 2-year old grandson, Ethan, she loved all aspects of being a new grandmother and spending time enjoying her family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Germa Lee, and is survived by her husband, Gary; two sons, Kevin of Oklahoma City and Kyle of New York, NY; grandson, Ethan of Oklahoma City; father, Lewis Roberts and his wife Lou of Altus; sister, Nancy Webb and brother-in-law, David of Lamesa, Texas; father and mother-in-law, Winston and Ethelda Higgs of Altus; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Kappy Higgs of Sapulpa; nieces and nephews, Chris Webb, Somer Webb, Marc Webb, Steven Higgs, Ryan Higgs, Ryan Matthias, and Kristi Morton.

Sharron will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to thank Dr. W. Emery Reynolds, Dr. James Reeves, and all caregivers of the Mercy Cancer Wing and Bellevue Skilled Nursing Facility. Funeral services will be held at Church of the Servant at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6.

Burial will be at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery immediately following. Memorial donations may be made to Church of the Servant or the American Cancer Society.
