RAINY DAVIS

Rainy Davis, 35, of Okmulgee died Sept. 4, 2001 at the University Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born May 26, 1966 in Clinton, Okla., to Bobby and Paula (Clark) Ford. She grew up in Roosevelt, moving to Elgin at an early age where she attended schools. She married Strap Davis on Feb.2, 2000 in Okmulgee and had lived here for the past two years.

Survivors include her husband, Strap Davis of the home; two sons, David Duncan and Sam Duncan, both of Lawton; one daughter, Lavender Shea of Florida; her mother and step-father, Paula and Larry Kendall of Fletcher, Okla.; her father, Bobby Ford of Roosevelt, Okla.; and four brothers, Bobby Paul Ford of Fletcher, Henry Lee Ford of Antioch, Okla., Mike Kendall of Fletcher and Greg Kendall of McCloud, Okla. She was preceded in death by two infant brothers, two grandfathers, a grandmother and an uncle.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Roosevelt Cemetery in Roosevelt, Okla. Burial will be under direction of the Hackney-Gish Funeral Home of Hobart.

RAYMOND L. CAUDILL

Raymond Louis Caudill, 58, of Okmulgee, died at his home. He was born May 24, 1943 to Raleigh and Luella (Fondren) Caudill.

He loved to hunt and fish and had lived in the Okmulgee County area for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his father and his step-father, Leonard S. Vann.

Survivors include his mother; one daughter, Belinda Caudill; four brothers, Roger Caudill of Muldrow, Robert O. Caudill of Blanco, Okla., Michael Vann of Humble, Texas and Gary Vann of Texas and three sisters, Terry Vieux of Stewart, Okla., Sharon Rogers of Leonard, Texas and Mary Rice of Russellville, Okla.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at the First United Methodist Church of Beggs with Rev. David Sanders officiating.

Arrangements are under direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home.

SHELBY GIBBS

Shelby Reed Gibbs, native Okmulgeean, died Aug. 30, 2001 in Houston, Texas. He was born Oct. 31, 1925 to Q. D. and Mary Gibbs. His father was a longtime Okmulgee attorney, who died in 1993.

Shelby attended schools in Okmulgee, graduating from Okmulgee High School with the class of 1943. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He earned his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1949. He moved to Houston in 1960 to work for Tenneco Oil & Gas, where he achieved the position of Vice President of Marketing and Crude Oil Trading prior to his retirement in 1987.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rosemary Osborn Gibbs of the home; his sons, Shelby Reed Gibbs Jr., and wife Patricia, Walter McIlhenny Gibbs and John Osborn Gibbs and wife Virginia; six grandchildren; and his sister, Buie Gibbs of Oklahoma City.

Memorial services have yet to be scheduled. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the American Heart Association in his name.

Arrangements are under direction of the George H. Lewis & Sons Funerals and Cremations of Houston.

REV. MORRIS BARNETT JR.

Rev. Morris "Sonny Joe" Barnett, 72, of Checotah died at his home on Sept. 6, 2001. He was born March 16, 1929 in McIntosh County to Roman Barnett and Mindy (Deere) Barnett.

Rev. Barnett was well known in the area, having ministered here since receiving his ministers license in 1963. He was ordained June 6, 1971. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953. In 1954 he married Mercedes Scott who preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Gwen Barnett of the home; five sons, Darrell "Sonny" Marcus and Carolyn Barnett of Oklahoma City, Fred and Soccara Barnett, Eddie and Becky Barnett, Bruce Barnett, all of Tulsa and Roscoe and Tina Barnett of Checotah; several grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2p.m., at the Artussee Baptist Church with Rev. Birdcreek Phillips officiating, assisted by Rev. Norman Daniels, Rev. Ruben Kenny and Rev. Bill Hobia.

Burial will be in the Barnett Family Cemetery under direction of the Gregg Funeral Home of Eufaula.

Military Rites will be conducted by the Creek Nation Honor Guard.

JOHNNY BUCKNER, III

Johnny Buckner III, 31, of Okmulgee died Sept. 6, 2001 at Wagoner. He was born March 16, 1970 to John and Darlene Buckner Jr.

He was employed at Leisure Manor Nursing Home. He was baptized on Nov. 23,1975 at Little Springs Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and was a member of Belvin Baptist Church in Okmulgee. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lucille Bear.

Survivors include his parents; one daughter, Kae Buckner of Henryetta; a sister, Patricia Buckner of Morris; two brothers, Marcy Washington of Okmulgee and Dean Washington of Oklahoma City; other relatives and a host of friends.

Wake services will be at 7 p.m., Friday at the Robert Simons Funeral Home Chapel in Henryetta.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Robert Simons Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Wilson Community Cemetery.

PATSY VERUCCHI

Patsy Asbury Verucchi, 62, died Sept. 3, 2001 at her home in Okmulgee. She was born May 3, 1939 in Claremore to Jimmie Asbury and Nellie Watts Asbury.

Patsy was raised in Weleetka where she attended school. On Dec. 4, 1956 she married Richard Pike. He was serving in the U.S. Air Force and the family was stationed at several military bases across the country. He preceded her in death in 1983. She remained in the Okmulgee area and was employed by Wal-Mart, having just received her 15 year service award. On Jan. 6, 2000, she married Fred Verucchi. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Weleetka.

Survivors include her husband Fred of the home in Okmulgee; three sons, Mark and wife Margaret Pike of Tucson, Ariz., Richard Glen Pike of Wetumka and Christopher Pike of Henryetta; a brother, Howard Asbury of Okmulgee; three grandchildren and a great-grandson along with a niece, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday at the Weleetka First Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Vance and Howard Asbury officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery under direction of Williamson Funeral Home of Weleetka.

Pallbearers will be Mark Pike, Glen Pike, Chris Pike, James Asbury, Sharon Asbury, Donny Asbury, and Gary Asbury.

DONALD WALLINGFORD

Donald Leon Wallingford, 74, of Hulbert, died Sept. 4, 2001 at the Veterans Hospital at Muskogee. He was born Aug.1,1927 in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Rex Day and Beatrice (Clifton) Wallingford.

He grew up in Sumner, Okla., where he graduated from high school. He was a veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force. He lived in California for 10 years before returning to Oklahoma in 1978 and making his home in Hulbert. He was an aircraft mechanic for several years and worked as a carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Lawrence and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Neoma (Mayfield) Wallingford of the home; a son, Donnie Wallingford and his wife Andrea of Tahlequah; three daughters, Debra Archambo and husband Curt of Hulbert, Kim Melton and husband Jim of Morris and Leslie Davis of Long Beach, Miss.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jimmie, Pete and Beryl; three sisters, Lila, Carmen and Marion; a sister-in-law, Betty and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Thursday at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hulbert with the Rev. Jimmy Noe officiating. Pallbearers were Marty Winn, Roger Jelinek, Dean White, Bob Reeves, Patrick Hinton and Daran Mayfield. Arrangements were under direction of the Mallett Funeral Home, Wagoner.

BETTY ARMSTRONG

Betty "Russell" Armstrong, 89, a resident of Morris for over 54 years, died Sept. 4, 2001 in Norman. She was born Feb. 25, 1912 in Bristow, Okla., to Ben and Sally (Corm) Bennett.

She had been a member of the Morris First Baptist Church for 54 years. She retired from Randy's Frozen Foods. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clint Armstrong in 1948, a son, David Armstrong of Collinsville in 1994, one brother, Bill Bennett and two sisters, Nonearl Zimmerman and Mattie Barksdale. Survivors include two daughters, Nedra Capps and husband, Jimmy of Lindsay, Okla., and Martha Queen and husband, Michael of Katy, Texas; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Morris First Baptist Church with Rev. Don Samples officiating. Burial will be in the Morris Cemetery. Services are under direction of the Kelley Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Dick Ashley, Joe David Melott, Ray Deerinwater, Ray Mahaney, Bruce Force and Tom Thomas.

DENETRA LEWIS

Denetra Lewis, 25, former Okmulgee resident, died Aug. 31, 2001 at her home in Sapulpa. She was born July 22, 1976 in Okmulgee.

She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Etta Cooks and her grandmother, Clarice Lewis.

Survivors include a brother, Eric Cooks and a sister, LaToya Cooks, both of Tulsa; her maternal great-grandmother, Earnestine Lewis of Okmulgee; paternal grandparents, Lloyd and Mary Ann Tarkington of Okmulgee; a close aunt, Cheryl E. Cooks of Tulsa and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Service of Memory will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 in the Precious Memories Chapel with her uncle, Rev. Jerry Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery under direction of the House of Winn Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Friday from12 noon until 6 p.m.

JOSEPH COWANS

Joseph Cowans, 79, of Okmulgee died Sept. 3, 2001 in a Tulsa hospital. He was born June 1, 1922 in Preston to Carl and Mamie (Smith) Cowans.

He was a retired Okmulgee Police Officer and also worked as a construction laborer. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd Cowans and Curtis Cowans, both of Tulsa; two daughters, Scorra Robinson and Sherry Wallace, both of Tulsa; three brothers, Amos Cowans, Jessie Cowans, both of Okmulgee and David Cowans of Denver, Colo.; several grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

Service of Memory will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 in the Precious Memories Chapel with Rev. Willie Antwine officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery under direction of the House of Winn Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Friday from12 noon until 6 p.m.

GEORGE ELLIG

George Carlton Ellig, 57, of Checotah and formerly of Henryetta, died Sept. 3, 2001. He was born May1, 1944 in Weleetka to James Henry Ellig and Helen Lanore (Hardin) Ellig.

He was a radiographer for IEOU # 2B. He graduated from Weleetka High School in 1962 and was an All-State football player, leading the state in scoring in 1962. He was an All-American Northeastern State graduate in 1966. He was a member of the American Legion and a VFW life member.

Survivors include his mother, Helen Ellig of McAlester; a son, George Carlton Ellig of Checotah; seven sisters, Joan Toth of Wetumka, Wanda Nolen of Tumbling Shoals, Ark., Rose Wilson of Port Orchard, Wash., Clara Jean Kuykendall of Burkburnett, Texas, Debbie Reynolds of Henryetta, Delana Moore of McAlester and Martina French of Tulsa; and three brothers, Jim Ellig of Tulsa, Gary Ellig of Weleetka and Mark Ellig of Florida. He was preceded in death by his father Henry Ellig in 1969 and a sister, Faye Wood in 1990.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday at the Dewar First Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Vance officiating. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery at Weleetka under direction of the Shurden Funeral Home. Military Honors were conducted by members of the Henryetta VFW Post 539 and the Okmulgee VFW Post 1189.

JOHN DRAKE JR.

John Drake Jr., 46, died Sept. 3, 2001 in a Tulsa hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1954 in Yuba City, Calif., to John B. Drake Sr., and Doris Heffley.

He was a longtime resident of Okmulgee County, moving to Henryetta in 1991. He was married to Linda Gann on Oct. 2, 1992 in Fort Smith, Ark. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lindsey Drake.

Survivors include his wife Linda Gann Drake of the home; two daughters, Marcie Fleming and Marissa Luallen, both of Okmulgee; four sons, Marcus Luallen of Okmulgee, Noah Drake of Henryetta, Nathan Golden of Seattle, Wash., and Jon Adams of Hartman, Ark., one stepson, Wade Gann of Edgerton, Kan.; one grandson; one step-grandson; four brothers, Bryan Drake and Billy Drake, both of Tulsa, Darwin Drake of Fairfield, Calif., and Kevin Drake of Columbia, Mo.; and one sister, Lola Baker of Fairfield, Calif.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday at the Robert Simons Funeral Home Chapel in Henryetta.
