BENJAMIN HARJO

Benjamin Harjo, 80, of Henryetta died Thursday, July 12, 2001 in Tulsa. He ws born Jan. 3, 1921in Kansas City, Mo., to James Harjo and Aggie Coachman Harjo.

He was married to Christine Marshall Harjo in 1951. He was a member of Alabama Quarsardy Kialiagee Tribe. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at an early age and made the military his career. He lived in many states while in the military and in Civil Service. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Graig Bucktrot.

Survivors include four sons, Frank Gene Harjo of Henryetta, James C. Harjo, William Harjo, and Bennie Harjo, all of Dustin; four daughters, Mandy Zafer of Tulsa, Karen Powell of Bryant, Anna Harjo of Claremore and Judy Harjo of Tulsa; one sister, Leona Gibbons of Oklahoma City; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and longtime friends.

Wake services will be held at 7p.m. Sunday in the Robert Simons Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Mitchell Taylor officiating.

Burial will be at Buckley Family Cemetery, south of Weleetka, under direction of the Robert Simons Funeral Home.

KENO SMITH

Keno E. Smith, 82, a longtime resident of Okmulgee died Friday, July 13, in Tulsa. He was born on October 12, 1918 in Kusa, OK to Joe and Rose Smith. Mr. Smith worked for ASG Industries for over 28 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Pollyanna Smith.

Survivors include one son, Dennis W. Smith of Oklahoma City.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 17 at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with Fr. Norman Alexandre officiating. Burial will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, July 16 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The family suggests contributions be made to the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

MAMIE GILMORE

Mamie Gilmore, 100, longtime Okmulgee resident, died July 10, 2001 in the local hospital. She was born August 12, 1900 in Foreman, AR to Norphlet and Kitty (Higgs) James. She was a homemaker, and longtime member of the Mt. Zion C.O.G.I.C. in Okmulgee.

She was preceding her in death were her parents, brothers, sisters, and husband.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

A homecoming celebration will be conducted Saturday, 1 p.m. in Mt. Calvary Miracle Temple, 1004 N. Osage St. with her pastor, Elder Frank Braswell, officiating.

Interment will be in Northwest Cemetery under the direction of the House of Winn Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CHARLES J. LOONEY

Charles (Charlie) James Looney,75, of Okmulgee died July 10, 2001 at the Veterans Hospital in Muskogee. He was born March 29, 1926 in Slick, Okla., to Harrison and Clara Bell (Steele) Looney.

He was retired from the City of Okmulgee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Mae Haper-Yocham Looney.

Survivors include two stepsons, Carlos Yocham of Okmulgee and Coy Yocham of McAlester; two brothers, Joe Looney of Okmulgee and Tommy Looney of Florence, Ala.; and one sister, Madline Conners of Okmulgee.

Services are pending with McClendon-Winters Funeral Home.

MARLYN MCCLASKEY

Marlyn McClaskey, 79, of Henryetta and Coalton died July 9,2001at Henryetta. She was born Oct.5, 1921in Harris County, Houston, Texas to C.H. Smith and Katy Chapman Smith.

She was married to John McClaskey Jan, 21, 1961 in Woodville, Miss. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Clifford Gordon; a granddaughter, Peggy Mooney; brothers, Archie, Floyd and Roy and a sister, Irene. She had lived at Coalton since 1978 before moving to a nursing home.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Mildred Gordon of California; a daughter-in-law, Doris Gordon of Henryetta; a sister, Inez Larson of Tulsa; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, at the Robert Simons Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rodney George officiating. Burial was at Salt Creek Cemetery in Wilson Community under direction of Robert Simons Funeral Home of Henryetta.

CARL WAYNE DODSON

Carl Wayne Dodson, 57,of Lakewood, Colo., and formerly of Henryetta, died June 18, 2001. He was born Oct.10, 1943 in Carson City, Colo., to George and Thelma Dodson.

He was raised at Henryetta, graduating from Henryetta High School in 1961. He was a maintenance worker and was employed at Gates Rubber Company for 37 years. He was married to Linda Lavendusky on Oct,19, 1967 at Henryetta. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Dodson of the home; daughter, Rebecca Woodruff of Lakewood; a son, Travis of Lakewood; four sisters, Joyce Shaw of Okmulgee, Doris Green of Bixby, Opal Cole of Checotah, and Ethel Dodson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Dean Dodson of Oglesby, Ill., and Jim Dodson of Normal, Ill.; 14 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held June 22 at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Pallbearers were Darrell Lavendusky, Jerry Owens and David Woodruff. Arrangements were under direction of the Aspen Mortuary.

PAUL LUNA

Paul Luna, 80, of Nashville, Tenn., formerly of Okmulgee, died July 1,2001. He was born in Okmulgee to Mr. and Mrs. Zachary Luna.

He was a graduate of Okmulgee High School. He was a member of the Coast Guard and was retired from the Coast Guard Reserve. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Okmulgee and the Una Baptist Church at Nashville.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three children David Luna, Janie Smotherman and Suzanne Clement; five grandchildren, two sisters, Pat Claiborn of Tulsa and Betty Lair of Wichita, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brother Ralph and Robert V. Luna.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Chapel in Nashville, buried in the Woodlawn Cross Mausoleum.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Woodlawn Chapel of Roses in Nashville.

MODENA C. LEDBETTER

Modena C. (Spirlock) Ledbetter, 70, of Henryetta died July 7, 2001. She was born April 2, 1931 in Lenna, Okla., to William Spirock and Edna (Palmer) Spirlock.

She was a lifetime resident of the Henryetta and Dewar areas. She was preceded in death by her father, William Spirlock in 1953; her mother, Edna Thomas in 1990 and a daughter, Kathy Lynn July in 1951.

Survivors include three sons, Larry Hester of Dewar, Richard Hester of Norman and Chris Hester of Tulsa; two daughters, Debbie Barry of Dewar, and Linda Durbin of Moore; a stepson, Tommy Ledbetter of Pierce, Okla., a stepdaughter, Thaleia Marston of California; three sisters, Louise Pippin of Henryetta, Juanita Laman of Denver, Colo., and Tela Heltz of Elk Grove, Calif.; two brothers, Tommy Spirlock of Guymon and Nolan Spirlock of The Colony, Texas; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10 at 1 p.m., at the Dewar First Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Vance officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery under direction of Shurden Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Steve Hester, John David Horsford, Billy Ray Durbin, Bradley Norman Durbin, Matt Hester, and Keith Hester.

TERESA VAN METER

Teresa Faye Van Meter, 38, of Henryetta died July 6, 2001 from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born Jan. 23, 1963 at Henryetta to John Junior Van Meter and Patsy Ruth (Pinkston) Van Meter.

Survivors include a sister, Jonna Marie Anglin of Mena, Ark.; a brother, Dana Van Meter of Tulsa; two nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and and a sister, Gaylene Boswell.

Funeral services were Monday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m., at the Shurden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Ray officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery under direction of Shurden Funeral Home.

JOHN RICHARD FURCH

John Richard Furch, Jr. 61, a resident of Bethany, Oklahoma died in Oklahoma City on Friday, July 6, 2001. Mr. Furch was born March 19, 1940 in Beggs, OK to John and Gertrude (Mason) Furch. He graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1960. After graduation, he entered the United States Army and after his discharge spent a number of years in nursing care facilities in Oklahoma. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at an early age. His mother, grandmother and brother Clarence preceded him in death.

He is survived by his father John R. Furch Sr., of Beggs, a sister Clara Whittaker of Beggs, two brothers Randolph Furch of St. Louis, Missouri and James Furch of Tulsa, Oklahoma, an uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at the McClendon-Winters Chapel in Beggs on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at 10 AM with Rev. Willie Antwine officiating. There will be no visitation.

SAMUEL (GENE) HULL

Samuel E. (Gene) Hull, 67, died Monday, July 9, 2001 in Okmulgee. He born November 28, 1933 in Okmulgee to Buford B. and Geneva A. (Carlisle) Hull.

He retired from the U.S. Army in 1979 after spending 22 years in active duty, serving in Korean and Vietnam wars. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Okmulgee and the local American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Butch Hull.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Mary (Finch) Hull, four children, a son James and his wife Cindy of Killeen, Texas, a daughter Genie and husband Danny Quintanilla of Portland, Texas, a son, Danny and wife Monica of Copperas Cove, Texas, and a daughter, Annette and husband Tony Gonzales of Killeen, Texas, eight grandchildren and a brother, Dick Hull of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.

CAROLYN SUE HOLDER

Carolyn Sue Holder, 59, Rolling Hills Estates, CA, passed away in Oklahoma City on Sunday, July 8, 2001. She was born to Julius "J. K" Keifer and Beatrice Merritt Wells on March 14, 1942 in Okmulgee, OK. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Lloyd, of the home in California; 2 daughters, Kimbra & husband, Pete Cherniss of Colton, CA, Lisanne & husband, Robert Henderson of Las Vegas, NV; I son, Brian Holder and daughter-in-law, Anabelle of Torrance, CA; 3 granddaughters, Brianna Holder, Heather Marie Henderson and Britney Wells Henderson; 3 sisters, Ella Mae York of Checotah, OK, Bonnie Shotwell and husband, Don of Eufaula, OK, Sharon Kaye Clarkson and husband Bill of Okmulgee, OK; 3 brothers, Jackie Wells & wife, Ida Beth of Manteca, CA; Donald Dean Wells & wife, Carol of Owasso, OK and Paul David Cook & wife, Beverly of Okmulgee, OK; 1 brother-in-law, Ray "Sonny" Fleming of Earlsboro, OK; many nieces and nephews. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister, Peggy Fleming, 1 brother-in-law, Billy "Chick" York and I brother, Raymond Cook, Jr. A memorial service will be conducted at the Bill Eisenhour Southeast Chapel in Del City, OK on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at 6:00 p.m., with burial in Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California on Monday, July 16, 2001.

GRACE J. LEWIS

Grace J. Lewis, 96, died Monday, July 2, 2001. She was born on Monday, August 29, 1904 in Peggs (Cherokee) Indian Territory to Laura Jane (Crow) and Anderson Ritchey.

On January 26, 1923 she married her husband, Richard Earl Lewis in Okmulgee. She was a resident of Morris for over 79 years and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Morris. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Richard Wayne Lewis; two brothers, John Ralph Ritchey and Clifford Anderson Ritchey; and four sisters, Elsa Pauline Anno, Maudie Vane, Beulah LeMaster and Lois Marie McClure;

Survivors include, two daughters, Marilyn Middleton and G. Darlene Lewis both of Morris, Oklahoma.

Services are Thursday, July 5, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church in Morris, Oklahoma. Reverend Wade Harleson will officiate. Interment will follow at the Okmulgee Cemetery. Services under the direction of the Kelley Funeral Home.

VERA M. PITTMAN

Vera Marie Pittman, 91, native Okmulgee resident, died June 29, 2001 at Highland Park Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 26, 1909 in Okmulgee to George and Princie (Choate) Wilson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include three sisters, Maxine Parker, Ruth Nash and Effie Lee Johnson, all of Okmulgee and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, July 6 at 11 a.m., in Woodlawn Cemetery by Bishop Thomas Smith.

Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m., until 6 p.m., at the House of Winn Funeral Home.
