DAVID RICKMAN

David Joe Rickman, 46, a resident of Okmulgee, died in Tulsa on Friday, November 29, 2002. David was born on September 6, 1956 in Okmulgee to Perry James and Georgia (Lytle) Rickman. He had worked as an oil field driller. David was a member of the South Side Baptist Church. His mother preceded him in death.

Survivors include his father, Perry J. Rickman of Okmulgee and one brother, Alan Lee Rickman of Norfolk, Va. and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be Thursday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., at the Southside Baptist Church. Rev. Tim Beam will officiate.

MARY JEANINE LYONS STERLING

Mary Jeanine Lyons Sterling died in Mineral Wells, Texas at the age of 84 years. She was born June 2, 1918 in Kansas City, MO and was the widow of Alfred Willis Sterling.

Services and arrangements are pending and will be announced by the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home.

ERMA RONEY

Erma N. Roney, 89, died Saturday, November 30, 2002 in Okmulgee. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5, in the Kelley Chapel with the Reverend Jeff Cranton officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the High Prairie Cemetery located north of Altoona, Kansas under the direction of the Shurden-Kelley Funeral Home of Okmulgee.

She was born on Thursday, December 12, 1912 to Richard and Cora (Davis) Scott in Roper, Kansas. She married Lyle E. Roney in July of l938 in New Albany, Kansas. He preceded her in death in October of 1991. She was preceded in death also by a brother, Dean Scott.

She started her teaching career in a one room school house in the state of Kansas. She then went on to teach Business Principals at O.S.U. Okmulgee for many years and was an active member of O.S.U. Okmulgee Retired Teachers Association. An active member of the First United Mecthodist Church of Okmulgee, she was a member of the Harmony Sunday School Class. She also served as a volunteer for the Okmulgee Memorial Hospital as long as her health permitted.

Survivors include one son, Curtis Roney of Okmulgee; two daughters. Marcia Anderson of Little Rock, Arkansas and Marilyn Shick of Katy, Texas; two brothers, Max Scott of Tulsa and Robert Scott of Independence, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 3, from 2:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. and Wednesday, December 4, from 8:00a.m. to 8:00 p.m The family will receive visitors in the Kelley Chapel on Wednesday between 5:00p.m. and 7:00p.m.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family requests that memorials be made to the "Methodist Boys Ranch" in care of thc First United Methodist Church, 302 South Seminole, Okmulgee, OK. 74447.

HELEN BLACKMON

Helen Katherine Blackmon, 90, a longtime resident of Henryetta, died Dec. 1, 2002 in Henryetta. She was born December 1, 1912 in Schulter to Anna and John Bodzek. She married Charles "Peanie" Blackmon, Sr. at Henryetta on January 14, 1933. She was a homemaker and lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the St. Michael's Altar Society. She was a 1932 graduate of Schulter High School and was an outstanding basketball player. She was preceded in death by her husband: Charles "Peanie" Blackmon, Sr. on March 16, 1988; a sister Mary Bodzek and a brother Leon Bodzek.

She is survived by a son, Charles Blackmon and wife Judi of Plano, TX; two daughters, Charlene Cole and husband Rosser of Farmington, NM; Libby Gragg of Oklahoma City; two sister, Velda Randall of Amarillo, TX and Albena Frew of Henryetta; six grandchildren, two sisters-in law, a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.

Services will be held Friday, December 6, 2002 at 1 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church officiated by Father Joseph V. Chirayath. Burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home.

BETTY WARD

Betty Ward, 78, of Muskogee and formerly of Okmulgee died Thursday, Nov, 28, 2002. She was born in Muskogee January 10, 1924 to Herbert and Lena (McCurtain) Moore.

Betty was raised in Muskogee and married John Ward August 25,1941. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 2000.

Mrs. Ward retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She was the granddaughter of Chief Green McCurtain, Chief of the Choctaw tribe. Betty was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church. She was a gifted musician and loved to play bridge in her spare time.

Survivors include her daughter, Frances Pitchford and husband Ron of Wagoner; son, John Ward Jr. and wife Cee of Poteau; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at 10:00 a.m., at the Bradley Belltower Chapel with Reverend Max Berry officiating.

Bradley Family Funeral Service of Muskogee was in charge of services.

Syble Elizabeth Maxwell

Syble Elizabeth Maxwell, lifelong Okmulgee resident, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at Okmulgee Memorial Hospital at the age of 79. She was born December 9, 1922 in Okmulgee to Edgar and Ruth (Leggett) Wells. She married J. Henry Maxwell, who preceded her in death in January 2001. She was raised in Okmulgee and graduated from Rhema Bible College. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God, and had served the church as a preacher's wife for many years. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Maxwell was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Odus and Boyd Wells, and a sister, Betty Jean Wells.

Survivors include a son, Steven Maxwell and wife Sharon of Okmulgee, a brother, Loyal Wells of Okmulgee and three grandchildren.

Private graveside rites were held Tuesday afternoon at the Okmulgee Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.

MARY LYONS STERLING

Mary Jeanine Lyons Sterling, lifelong resident of Okmulgee, OK, died peacefully at 6:50 AM on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 in hospital in Weatherford, Texas. Mrs. Alfred W. Sterling, known to most of her younger friends as "Ms. Mary", was in the company of her immediate family when she was called.

Born on June 2, 1918, Mrs. Sterling continued in support of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer until illness removed her from the Altar Guild in September of this year.

Visitation will be 6:30 - 8:00 PM Thursday, Dec. 5, at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee with funeral services at 10:00 AM Friday, Dec. 6 in her home parish at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. Burial will be at the Okmulgee Cemetery.

Mr. Sterling preceded his wife in death in 1992. The Sterlings were active in community affairs with Ms. Mary continuing her Civic works well into her final year. After graduating from Okmulgee Junior College and the University of Oklahoma, Mrs. Sterling joined the work force in the Office of the County of Okmulgee Commissioners. While she counted many friends in the GOP, Ms. Mary was an avid Democrat who participated on a regular basis in Town Hall in Tulsa. Mrs. Sterling belonged to P. E. O. Art and literature Club, Episcopal Church of the Redeemer Altar Guild and many more active groups within the community. She was an historical preservationist and an avid supporter of the Okmulgee Public Library. Her family, her friends, her home and her heritage in the great State of Oklahoma were the loves of Mrs. Sterling's life. In addition to her husband, her sisters, Aphia and Jaynes also preceded Mrs. Sterling in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Meredith Sterling Motley and son-in-law, Herman G. Motley; her grandson and granddaughter-in-law Christopher and Amber Motley and her great-grandchildren, Lillian Sterling Motley and Grant O'Brien Motley, all of Mineral Wells. Also her niece, French Brown Baker and Husband William L. Baker and a great-nephew, Dr. Clark Baker and wife Terri Baker and a great-niece, Janice Baker Hawkins and husband Martin Hawkins.

GLEN BASIL VAUGHN

Glen Basil Vaughn, 81, a resident of rural Henryetta, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 in Henryetta. He was born November 22, 1921 in Howe, Oklahoma to Rosa and James Vaughn. He was married to Hazel Virginia Vaughn at Howe, Oklahoma on August 16, l941. Their 61 year union was blessed with 11 children, 28 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. He was retired from the City of Henryetta in 1986 after serving as the Public Works Director for 30 years. He was a Sergeant serving in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Tony Joe Vaughn, his parents James & Rosa Vaughn, a granddaughter; brother, Buck Vaughn, and a sister, Montess Huckabay.

Survived by his wife Hazel Virginia Vaughn, of the home; 3 daughters, Carolyn Peavler and husband Joe, Henryetta; Beth Winn and husband Kenneth, Henryetta; Anna Williams and husband Hank, Henryetta; 7 Sons, Charles Vaughn & wife Pat of Dustin; Ernest Vaughn and wife Linda, Roland, Oklahoma; Glen Vaughn & wife Debbie, Hoffman; Jerry Vaughn and wife Lynn, Henryetta; Howard Vaughn and wife Cheri, Weleetka; Roger Vaughn, of the home; David Vaughn and wife Diane, Henryetta; 1 brother, Percy Vaughn and wife Fern, Newton, Kansas: 28 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 3 Sisters in law, a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Charles Vaughn, Ernest Vaughn, Glen Vaughn, Jerry Vaughn, Howard Vaughn, Roger Vaughn, and David Vaughn.

Services will be held Friday, December 6, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Salem Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Dale Huckabay. Burial will be at New Sonora Cemetery under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home.

FLORENCE POWDRILL

Florence Powdrill, 81 of Sapulpa, died on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 in a Tulsa hospital. She was born January 29, 1921 in Okmulgee, the daughter of William and Willa Barnes.

She moved with her family to Beggs, Oklahoma before moving to Sapulpa in 1938. She met and later married Jesse Powdrill, who preceded her in death. She was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Sapulpa and worked for 15 years at the Hissom Memorial Center at Sand Springs.

Survivors include her daughter, Maxine Jones and husband Alvin of Sapulpa; a sister, Idella Christian of Tulsa; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends.

Service of Memory will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m., in the Mount Olive Baptist Church, 130 N. Gray. Reverend Scott Gordon, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the North Heights Cemetery at Sapulpa. Funeral services are under the direction of the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc. Visitation will be on Friday, December 6, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the Calvary Baptist Church in Sapulpa.
