Imel
IMEL -- Blaine, left his 4 beloved daughters on March 14, 2005, to be with the Lord and to join his parents, Arthur and Hazel Imel, who preceded him in death. Blaine was truly of the "Greatest Generation," having served as a Marine Corsair fighter pilot in WWII. After graduation from Cushing High School, he attended Oklahoma Military Academy (now Rogers State University) because his dad felt that war was coming and he needed to learn to fly. After graduating from OMA in 1941, he headed to OU, where he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and made lifetime friends. A year later the United States was in the war and he joined the Marine Corps as an officer and was sent for training in Kansas, Florida, and Texas, where he was in the same training class as George Herbert Walker Bush. Active duty sent him to Santa Barbara, CA. Having joined the Marines because they flew off land, the Marines assigned him to the USS Bunker Hill, a carrier ship seeing duty in the Pacific. Blaine was part of Admiral Mitscher's fleet, flying with the squadron which dropped bombs on Tokyo on February 25. He also participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He completed 66 combat missions, earned 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 5 Air Medals. He
also shot down 3 enemy planes. On May 11, the USS Bunker Hill was kamikazied, and Blaine jumped 11 stories to the cold waters below. Nearly 400 of his fellow Marines were killed in the attack. His injuries left him with back pain the rest of his life and earned him the Purple Heart. After the War, Blaine completed an Architectural degree at the University of Oklahoma, where he was fortunate to study under the distinguished architect Bruce Goff. Blaine began his long and successful career in the fall of 1950. His designs grace the state of Oklahoma, from private homes in Cushing and Tulsa, to the Fine Arts Museum in Norman, the campus of Rogers State University, and in particular to the Jenks Public Schools, in which he took great pride. Blaine was a man of great talents and varied interests. He loved building models of anything that moved: trains, cars, planes, and ships. Japanese art and the graceful bonsai plants captured his imagination and gave him many hours of pleasure, as did the Green Country Bonzai organization. The Tulsa Garden Railroad group was treated to an annual Open House at Blaine's garden railroad. He was also a gifted painter and gave his daughters Indian paintings and Japanese style paintings through the years. The Tulsa Air and Space Museum had become his love in the later years. He served as Vice President, and his firm provided the design work for the museum, which will be completed in 2005. In all areas of endeavor, Blaine was recognized for his talents, ability, and enthusiasm. There is an endowed chair in the Architecture School at OU in his name; he was named to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum Hall of Fame; he was a member of Southside Rotary for over 30 years; Cushing High School honored him as a Distinguished Hall of Fame Graduate; Rogers State University named him to their Hall of Fame. Blaine was a charter member of the OU College of Architecture's Board of Visitors and was a member of the Civil Engineering and Environmental Science Visiting Council. In 1999, OU awarded him the Regents' Award of Distinguished Service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum. Blaine is survived by: his brother, John (Mickey) Imel and his family; wife, Sherry; Blaine's 4 daughters, Barbara and Allen Smallwood, Deborah Imel Nelson, Cindy and Jerry Kreymer, and Melanie Imel; 5 grandchildren, David Collins, Becky Downie, Robert Nelson, Andy Nelson, Monica Kreymer; and 4 great-grandchildren, Chelsie Downie, Khloe Downie, Rachel Blaine Collins, and Michael Collins; and many, many friends who will miss him dearly.
