Gordon Russell Flygare, Colonel, USAF (ret)
Gordon Russell Flygare, Colonel,
USAF (ret), 95, of Norman, Oklahoma,
died Sunday, November 30, 2003 in
Norman, Oklahoma. Memorial Services
will be held at 12:00 Noon, Friday,
December 12, 2003 at St. Mark The
Evangelist Catholic Church in Norman,
Oklahoma with Reverend Thomas J.
Boyer officiating. Services are under the
direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of
Norman, Oklahoma.
Gordon was born on January 25, 1906 in LaSalle, Minnesota,
to Frank Oscar and Ebba Marie Applequist Flygare. He graduated
from Sherburn High School in Sherburn, Minnesota
Gordon was raised on his parents farm in southern Minnesota and
graduated from Sherburn High School in 1922. While always having
a love for the traditional farm of the Midwest, Gordon also showed
a talent for mechanical things. He spent the next ten years working
with automobiles and later airplanes.
Colonel Flygare enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 1932 in
the 109th Observation Squadron. Besides his military duties, Gordon
and a partner found time and money to buy a private plane. This
aircraft was a key component of his courtship of Dorothy O’Neill,
culminating in their marriage in 1937.
Before WWII, Gordon and Dorothy had 2 children, Gordon in 1938
and Helen in 1942. During WWII he served with the 107th Tactical
Reconnaissance Squadron, formerly a part of the Michigan National
Guard, in England, France and Germany.
Returning to Minnesota after the war, Gordon served with the Air
National Guard until activated in 1952. During the Korean Conflict,
he served as Director of Materiel for the 3rd Bomb Wing.
Gordon, now a Lieutenant Colonel, remained on active duty with the
Air Force. Following a assignment with the Oklahoma City Air
Material Area at Tinker AFB, he was stationed in Saigon, South Viet
Nam for the year of 1961.
His military decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Bronze
Star.
Colonel Flygare retired from active duty in 1964 and resided in Cocoa
Beach, FL until 1990. Residing in Norman since 1990, he enjoyed
beekeeping and gardening, loves that he had acquired as in his youth.
He particularly enjoyed keeping bees, in Florida and after moving to
Norman. Finally, a few years ago, failing eyesight in his mid nineties
made him sell his beloved hives.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy O’Neill,
and a brother, Alden W. Flygare. He is survived by a son and
daughter-in-law, Gordon and Ann Flygare or Norman and a daughter
and son-in-law, Frank and Helen Moran, of Santa Fe, NM. Also
surviving is a sister, Ferne Nelson and a brother Kenneth Flygare of
Minnesota.
Also surviving are grandchildren Jennifer Flygare and Karen Voyles
of Oklahoma, Peggy Salas, Tom Moran of Texas, and Dorothy
Cassetta of Florida and 4 great-grandsons.

Titus (T.J.) Lankford
Titus (T.J.) Lankford, 90, of Oklahoma City, formerly of the
Phillips Plant area near Wetumka, Oklahoma, died Thursday,
November 13, 2003, in Norman, Oklahoma. Graveside Services will
be held at 2:00 P.M, Monday, November 17, 2003 at Holdenville
Cemetery, Holdenville, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction
of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
Mr. Lankford was born November 15, 1913 in Belzonia,
Oklahoma, to James Matthew and Martha (Rich) Lankford. He was
the youngest of eight children and grew up near Wetumka. He spent
much of his life farming in that area of Oklahoma. Mr. Lankford
married Myrtle Marie Martin in 1937 in Okemah, Oklahoma, she
preceded him in death in March 1970. He later married Buryle Parr,
she preceded him in death in November 2000. He also worked for the
City of Oklahoma City as a supervisor of groundskeeping at the
Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.
Mr. Lankford was preceded in death by his parents, two
wives, and seven brothers and sisters. Survivors include his son,
Jimmy Lee Lankford and wife, Betty of Blanchard, Oklahoma; three
grandchildren, Michael Lankford and wife, Jodi of Blanchard, OK;
Justin Lankford and wife, Lynna of Blanchard and Michelle Huck and
husband, Bruce of Edmond, OK; five great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.

Jredia Wilson Orr
Jredia Wilson Orr, 89, of Norman, Oklahoma, died Tuesday,
November 4, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Mrs. Orr was born
October 20, 1914 in Reform, Mississippi, to Fred Gunter and
Margaret Almedia (Smith) Wilson. She was a long time resident of
Marks, Mississippi and was employed as a clerical assistant to the
Superintendent of Education in Quitman County, Mississippi for
twelve years. Jredia married Clifton Linwood Orr on February 14,
1948 in Reno, Nevada. After their marriage, they established a home
in Memphis, Tennessee where they lived until moving to Norman,
Oklahoma in 1974. She lived at the Rambling Oaks Assisted Living
Center for the last three years. Jredia was a member of McFarlin
Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman, Oklahoma
Mrs. Orr was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
Clifton in 1998 and one brother and one sister. Survivors include son,
James C. Orr and wife, Donna L. of Orlando, Fl and daughter, Reda
Wilson Jarvis and husband, Dr. Robert of Norman; grandchildren, Dr.
J. Matthew and wife, Stephanie of Macon, GA, Staff Sgt. Brian C.
Orr of Destin, FL, Dr. Nicole Jarvis of Norman, OK and Robert L.
Jarvis Jr and wife, Laura of Edmond, OK; and great-grandchildren,
Nicholas and Patrick Orr of Macon, GA.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Rambling Oaks
Assisted Living Center at 1050 Rambling Oaks Drive, Norman, OK
73072.

Colonel Samuel Houston Roane
Samuel Houston Roane of
Norman, Oklahoma, aged 67, died
Wednesday November 12, 2003 at home,
he had suffered a lengthy illness prior to
his death. Reverend David Jones of
Oklahoma City will officiate the services
on Saturday, November 15, 2003 at
10:00 a.m. at the Havenbrook Funeral
Home Chapel in Norman. Interment will
follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in
Norman, Oklahoma.
A native of Norman, Roane was born on June 6, 1936 to
Alta Mae and Walter Houston Roane. Sam attended elementary
and high school in the city of Norman. He graduated from
Oklahoma State University, receiving a B. S. in Geology in 1960.
Sam was a Captain for Northwest Airlines, Inc. until his
retirement in 1996. Sam was also a Lt. Col. in the United States
Air Force Reserve with the 934th Tactical Air Command, flying
C-130's, until his retirement in 1994. Sam and Marjorie attended
Bethel Baptist Church in Norman for the past few years.
Sam was preceded in death by his young brother, Marvin
Dickey Roane, and his parents, Alta Mae Boyd and Walter
Houston Roane. He is survived by his wife of the home, Marjorie
Ama Black Roane, and his son, Samuel Houston Roane, Jr., who
resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and one grandchild, Iris
Seichrist-Roane. He also leaves behind his sister and her husband,
Nina and Gerald Spotts, of Norman, his younger brother and his
wife, Dr. and Mrs. James B. Roane, of Norman, his brother-in-law
and his wife, Amos E. Black, III and Kay, and his sister-in-law,
Mary E. Black Osborn of Ponca City, nieces, Cheryl Ponder,
Deborah Spotts-Kalkhan Ronda Morgan, Stephanie Roane, and
Christy Ponder and nephews, Robert Roane, Stephen Roane,
Gerald D. Spotts, David Gene Johnson and Timothy Earl Johnson,
Joshua Black, Amos E. Black, IV, Great Nephews Levi Johnson,
Gabriel Johnson, Daniel Morgan, Jason Ponder, Cameron Spotts-
Kalkhan and Jarrett Spotts-Rames. Sam leaves a host of friends
who loved him and will miss him very much.
Sam and his wife resided in Minneapolis, Minnesota for
thirty-three years before moving back to Norman, Oklahoma in
2000. Sam loved flying both commercial and private planes and
spending time at his cabin and island in Ontario, Canada.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oklahoma
Medical Research Foundation at 825 NE 13th St., Oklahoma City,
OK 73104-9930.
