James E. Stephens

Lifelong Stroud resident James "Sonny" E. Stephens died Saturday in Oklahoma City. He was 57.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at the Stroud Cemetery.

Stephens was born Aug. 26, 1941, in Milfay, Okla., to Dave Stephens and Marie (Wilson) Ingram. He married Delores Vasquez on Sept. 4, 1994, in Slick, Okla.

Stephens served in the U.S. Army and was a member of High Praise Church. He was employed by A and M Engineering and Environmental Company.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Stephens, of the home; his father, Dave Stephens, Gore; sons, Greg Brown, Jerry Smith and Lee Smith, all of Stroud; Tony Smith, Oklahoma City; Greg Smith, Shawnee; daughters, Belinda Lord and Donnelle Tinsley, both of Depew; Denise Vail, Stroud; brothers, Paul Stephens, Guymon; Mike Ingram, Stroud; Edward Stephens, Huntington, Ark.; Jerry Stephens, Roland, Okla.; sisters, Mae Vinson, Cushing; Ivoria Conley, Tulsa; Ruthie Tipken, Gore; Pam Pierce, Chandler; Donia Smith, Stroud; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Ingram, one niece and one nephew.

Michael Ray Ferguson

Former Shawnee resident Michael Ray Ferguson, Leakey, Texas, died Friday in Del Rio, Texas. He was 49.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Military burial honors will be at Little Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. The casket will be open at the chapel until 9:45 a.m. and not re-opened.

Memorials may be made to the Leakey, Texas, E.M.S., Indian Scout Cemetery in Bracketville, Texas; or the Navy Marine Corps. Relief Society in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Ferguson was born Aug. 27, 1948, in Shawnee, to Troy and Wilma (Dennison) Ferguson. He graduated from high school in Liberal, Kan., and attended Senior Enlisted Academy in 1989. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967, retiring in 1996 in Norfolk, Va. Ferguson married Anna Louise Clawson on Aug. 13, 1994.

He was a member of the VFW, the Fleet Reserve, the Leakey, Texas, Volunteer Fire Department and the Leakey United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Louise Ferguson of Leakey, Texas; his mother, Wilma Ferguson of Shawnee; his stepchildren, J.D. and Crystal Clawson of Savannah, Ga.; Danielle and Christopher Lyon of Corpus Christi, Texas; his daughters, Stacy Ferguson and Tami Sedberry, both of San Diego, Calif.; a granddaughter, Alexis Hernandez of San Diego, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Sharon Ferguson of Houston, Texas; his sisters and a brother-in-law, Linda Ferguson Treat of Shawnee, Shirley and Kenneth Branson of Weatherford; and several other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Troy Ferguson, in 1983.

Donald Gene McClain

Former Shawnee resident Donald Gene McClain died Saturday at the age of 52.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Midway Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Burial will be 4 p.m. at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home Northeast in Oklahoma City.

McClain was born in Shawnee and graduated from Prairie Valley High School. He retired with honors from the Seminole Army National Guard and worked for the Rock Island Railroad, the Oklahoma City Livestock Control and attended the police academy in Oklahoma City before working for the City of Oklahoma City as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Pam, of 25 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Jennifer McClain, Jerry and Kelly McClain; his father, Mac McClain; two grandchildren and several other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose McClain.

Gertrude G. Cartmill

Gertrude G. Cartmill, 83, Cushing, died Saturday at a local hospital.

She was born Nov. 8, 1914, in Taneyville, Mo., to Frank and Ora Lee (Davidson) Casey. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1933. She married Alfred Leon Cartmill on July 5, 1947, in Shawnee, and moved to Cushing in 1953. She was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad during World War II and was a member of the Cushing Church of Christ and a charter member of the Cushing Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Keith Lynn and Sharon Cartmill, Cushing; grandchildren Casey L. Cartmill, a student at Oklahoma State University, and Brian C. Cartmill, Cushing; brother and sister-in-law, B.H. and Lois Casey, Corpus Christi, Texas; nephew, James R. Casey, Houston, Texas; and nieces, Kathleen Winstead, Goliad, Texas, Kay De Leon, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Carol Ann Baker, Shawnee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Donald L. Cartmill and Ronald R. Cartmill; sisters, Thelma O. Baker and Audrey O. Casey; and brothers, Albert Casey and James Casey.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Cushing, with Bob Fitzgerald and Wendyl Heffington officiating. Burial will be in Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, Cushing. Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer Funeral Home, Cushing.

Carol Ann Wilkinson

Carol Ann (Forbes) Wilkinson, 59, Okemah, died Sunday at her home.

She was born Nov. 16, 1938, in Chickasha to George and Mildred (Watson) Forbes. She married Ronald Wilkinson in El Reno in 1990. She was a homemaker and substitute teacher and a member of the First Christian Church, Okemah.

She is survived by her husband, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Erick and Tracie Linkous, Shawnee, and Tracy Linkous, Coppers Cove, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and James Blocker, Yukon; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church, Okemah, with the Rev. Will Eads officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Okemah. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.

Laura Evelyn Guinn

Laura Evelyn Guinn, 88, Maud, died Saturday at a local nursing home.

She was born in Maud on April 5, 1910, to Dennis Alexander and Peva (Smith) Mars. She married Curtis Russell "Russ" Guinn on July 2, 1927, in Tecumseh. She moved to Maud in 1969. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Maud.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 13, 1997; her parents; four sisters; three brothers; one son and one daughter.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Al Jackson, Maud; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Shirley Guinn, Lakewood, Wash., and Gordon and Mary Guinn, Ojai, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Cartmill, Farmersville, Texas, and Ruth Phelps, Goldsby; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Jane Mars, and Warren and Imogene Mars, all of Goldsby.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Maud, with the Rev. Jim Kirkendall officiating. Burial will be in Cummings Cemetery, Maud. Arrangements are under the direction of Knight Funeral Home, Maud.

Terry Don Hoyt

Asher resident Terry Don Hoyt died Wednesday in a local hospital. He was 63.

He was born Oct. 16, 1934, to Olin and Golda Cariker Hoyt at Hoyt, Okla. He was raised and attended school at Hoyt. He married Barbara Hoskins in Reno, Nev., on Feb. 1, 1953.

He was a printing press operator and plant manager for Champion Packing and he was a reserve police officer in Oakland, Calif. He was a member of Fruitville Masonic Lodge 336 and he was a Christian.

Hoyt was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 1997 and by his parents.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Jennie of Tracy, Calif. and Jeff and Jennifer of Lexington; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and John Cottingham of Pinola, Calif., Karla Corson and Terri Hoyt, both of Yreka, Calif., and Lisa Hoyt and Stephen of Tracy, Calif.; brothers, Leon and Milo, both of California, and O.V. of California; sisters, Marguriette Boyd and Flora Lee Hoyt, both of Oklahoma, Linda Cunningham, Washington and Lawonna Chunning, California; 12 grandchildren, Paul, Brian, Eric, Lauren, Chand, Daniel, Derek, Dewayne, Michael, Katelynn, Stephen and Jeffrey Don II, and many other relatives.

Service was Sunday at Hoyt Cemetery with Rita Bowles officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Wadley Funeral Service, Purcell.

Deo Belle Webber

Seminole resident Deo Belle Webber, 86, died Saturday, May 2, at Presbyterian Hospital, Oklahoma City.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with her son, A.E. "Doc" Webber, officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Seminole.

Mrs. Webber was born March 9, 1912, in Willisville, Ill., to Edgar and Sally E. (Bagwell) Small.

She and her husband, Alfred Hix Webber, whom she married March 15, 1941, in Perryville, Mo., came to Seminole from St. Louis, Mo., in 1944. The couple had three sons and two daughters.

She was a homemaker and registered nurse and was a member of Berean Missionary Baptist Church.

Casket bearers will be Ronnie Plank, Matt Webber, Chris Webber, Scott Roberson, Tom Webber and Jack Webber, with Carl Edgell serving as honorary.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

She is survived by her husband of the home; three sons, Doc and Jack Webber, both of Seminole, and Tom Webber of Tulsa; two daughters, Ann McClard of Tampa, Fla., and Carol Otterman of Liberty, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Charley Wesley Smith

Shawnee resident Charley Wesley Smith died Monday at a local hospital. He was 79.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dwyane Dennis officiating, assisted by Don Sullivan. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Smith was born May 13, 1919, in Wewoka to W.C. and Ellen Smith. He married Altha E. Henson on Jan. 24, 1939, in Shawnee.

Smith served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1979. He was a member of Central Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife Altha, of the home; son, David W. Smith, Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Carol A. Smith, Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.
