Steven Keith Weeks

Shawnee resident Steven Keith Weeks died Sunday in an Oklahoma City hospital at the age of 50.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore and the Rev. Dr. Larry Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. The casket will remain open at the funeral home until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Weeks was born Jan. 2, 1948, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., the son of William H. and Laura Melvina Weeks. He graduated from Windsor (Mo.) High School and received an associate degree, with honors, in computer science from Seminole State College. He married Patricia Fruit in Shawnee on July 19, 1969.

Weeks retired as a petty officer first class from the U.S. Navy in 1979 and the family moved to Shawnee from Maryland. He was a computer programmer for the data services division of the Department of Human Services.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as an usher and on the buildings and maintenance committee. He was a former Scout Master of Troop 407 at First Christian Church and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving are his wife, Pat Weeks, of the home in Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Laura Weeks, Norman; daughter, Christina Weeks, Seminole; mother and her husband, Melvina Weeks and Jack Morrison, West Plains, Mo.; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Weeks, Shawnee; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vinita and Tommy Penuel, Shawnee, and many other relatives.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church building and maintenance fund or to Gideon International.

Velma Beatrice Hale

Velma Beatrice Hale of Stroud died Friday in Houston, Texas, at the age of 82.

She was born March 6, 1916, in Shelby, Mo., the daughter of Carl and Writa May (McGhee) Coffman. She married Elmer "Deb" Hale on Dec. 25, 1935, in Guthrie. She was a resident of Stroud and a member of First Baptist Church, Stroud.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1975, her parents and one sister.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Martha Hale, Edmond; daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Bill Seyl, Houston, Texas; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Stroud First Baptist Church with the Rev. Burl Mackey officiating. Burial will follow at Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Stroud.

Sadie Sue Buchanan

Lifelong Shawnee resident Sadie Sue Buchanan died Saturday in a local nursing home. She was 90.

She was born Dec. 12, 1907, in Shawnee to Elmer T. and Sadie Sue (Clay) Carson. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1926. She married Frank A. Buchanan in Wewoka on Nov. 24, 1931.

She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1925.

She is survived by her special friends Delbert and Dorothy Jackson and family of Shawnee. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband.

Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. today at Fairview Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Essie Stewart

Essie Stewart of Tecumseh died Sunday at the age of 82.

She was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Tecumseh to Albert and Erma (Smith) Presley. She was reared south of Seminole and attended school at Seminole, Taylor and Bowlegs. She married Frank Myers in 1931 and they had two daughters. She later married Hoyt Stewart.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Borger, Texas, and Vernal, Utah, before returning to Tecumseh in 1960. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by two daughters, Maxine Curfew, Nevada; Arlene Roberts, Tecumseh; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Hoyt Stewart, in 1975; her parents; two brothers, Carl Presley, May Presley; one sister, Merl Chaffin, and one granddaughter, Susan Massey.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Grove Cemetery, Seminole, with Bob Anderson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Margaret B. Franklin

Former Shawnee resident Margaret B. Franklin, 96, died Sunday in an Oklahoma City nursing home after a long illness.

She was born Feb. 2, 1902 in Lexington, Ky., to L.E. and Sadie (Powell) Beagle. She graduated from high school in Hattiesburg, Miss.

She married Jeff D. Franklin on Oct. 22, 1920, in Beggs. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church, Shawnee, and a member of several garden clubs. She lived in Shawnee for 45 years.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Dorothy Franklin, Monett, Mo.; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Susan and Jeff Shriver, Centerville, Iowa; grandson Jeff Franklin, Toledo, Ohio; great-grandson, J.D. Shriver, Centerville, Iowa; sister Jean Phetteplace, San Angelo, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1979.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, with Dr. Paul Calmes officiating.

Rick Kubicek

Rick Kubicek, 50, Shawnee, died Sunday in an Oklahoma City hospital.

He was born June 11, 1947, to Jim and Delores (Markham) Kubicek. He graduated from Prague High School in 1966 and attended Okmulgee State Technical School.

He married Donna Carpenter on April 13, 1968, in Prague. He served in the Army Reserve, was a driver for Pratt Discount Foods, Shawnee, a member of the First Baptist Church, and a volunteer with Operation Christmas.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; son Shawn Kubicek, Shawnee; his parents, Shawnee; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and Kianna Kubicek, Shawnee, and Steve and Cindy Kubicek, Mandeville, La.; sister Connie Newell, Tulsa; several foster children, including Lacey VanDusen and James Beach; two grandchildren, Christian and Kendra Kubicek, Tecumseh; four nephews; one niece; two great-nieces; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, his paternal grandparents, one aunt, and an uncle.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Paul Calmes officiating. Burial will be in Graden Grove Cemetery.

Austin Andes Coon

Austin Andes Coon, infant son of Thomas Coon and Tresha Andes of Konawa, died Sunday. He was born Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Oklahoma City.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Cemetery with the Rev. George Jesse officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home of Konawa.

He is survived by his parents; five brothers, Rico Coon, Jason Coon, Tyler Andes, David Andes, Jarrod Coon, and three sisters, Teresa Coon, Marie Coon, and Cheasa Coon. His sister, Kendyle Andes, preceded him in death in 1992.

Earl Phillips

World War II veteran Earl Phillips, 78, Meeker died Sunday.

He was born Dec. 5, 1919, at Tipton Hill, N.C., the son of George and Lillie (Sykes) Phillips. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a survivor of the "Bataan Death March" in the Philippines.

He was a truck driver and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Meeker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers.

He is survived by two brothers, Euther Phillips, Mineral Wells, Texas; W.C. Phillips, Galloway, Ohio; five sisters, Glenna Jiles, Westerville, Ohio; Arlena Carrozza, Austin, Texas; Rosemary Mullins, Galena, Ohio; Rayena Sandell, Bradenton, Fla.; Dorris Lundquist, Garden Grove, Calif., and many other relatives.

Prayer vigil will be 7 p.m. today at St. Michael's Church, Meeker, with services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Rev. Adrian Vorderlandwehr, O.S.B., will officiate. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler. Viewing will be at Parks Brothers Chapel in Meeker.

Steve Edwin Kerns

Lifelong Payne County and Lincoln County area resident Steve Edwin Kerns died Saturday in Tryon. He was 69.

He was born June 11, 1928, in Stillwater to Harvey and Opal Mae (Gum) Kerns. He was a farm mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah C. Kerns, in 1987.

Survivors include one son, Michael Kerns, Tryon; five daughters, Tina Few, Perkins; Renae Clayton, Oklahoma City; Regina Robinett, Tryon; Tonya Farasyn, Parkland, Okla.; Katrina Kerns, Osceola, Neb.; special friend, Linda Luallen, and many others.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Parkland Cemetery with the Rev. Ted Gibson and the Rev. Chad Gibson officiating. Memorial will be 2 p.m. today at Tryon Christian Union Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Chandler.
