Walter Ray Penuel

Walter Ray Penuel, 75, Seminole, died Wednesday at a local hospital.

He was born in Walters, Okla., on Jan. 22, 1923, to Melvin and Katie (Powell) Penuel. He married Norma Lee McKee on Nov. 27, 1947, in Seminole. He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked in the Aleutian Islands, the Phillipines, Greenland, Okinawa, Guam, Venezuela, American Samoa, and Indonesia, and set the beams for the Myriad Convention Center in Oklahoma City and was a member of Ideal Street Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by parents, a brother, Kenneth, and sister, Dorothy.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; son, Kenneth Penuel, Seminole; two daughters, Susan Lewellen, Yukon, and Luanne Langwell, Horntown; brothers, George Penuel, Shawnee, and Leon Penuel, Longview, Texas; sister, Elizabeth Moss, Seminole; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Seminole, with Thomas Llewellen and Linn Jones officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Maxine Blakeney

Maxine Blakeney, 96, Seminole died Monday.

She was born Jan. 4, 1902, in Winsboro, Texas, and had lived in Seminole for 82 years. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, Earlsboro, for 70 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Russell, Seminole; sons, Mildridge Anderson, Midwest City, and Robert S. Anderson, Earlsboro; sisters, Mae Jackson, Los Angeles, Calif., and Willie K. Forte, Oklahoma City; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ware Methodist Church, Earlsboro, with the Rev. Roger Harris officiating. Burial will be in Earlsboro Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Myers Mortuary, Wewoka.

Kemberly Kay Stogner

Wanette resident Kemberly Kay Stogner died May 1 in Sallisaw at the age of 36.

She was born in Moore on Feb. 12, 1962, the daughter of Merle and Pattie Gibson. She married James Herschell Stogner on June 6, 1984, in Raton, N.M. She was a horse racing jockey.

She is survived by her husband, James Herschell Stogner, and son, Matthew Cade Gibson, of the home; her parents, Merle and Patti Gibson, Crystal Beach, Texas; sister, Carol Gibson, Fort Worth, Texas; brother, George Gibson, Crystal Beach, Texas, and many others.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Horseman's Chapel of Blue Ribbon Downs, Sallisaw, with the Rev. Jerry Green officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.

Vera Juanita Ray

Vera Juanita Ray of Durant died Monday at the age of 79.

She was born at the Carter Oil camp near Holdenville on Sept. 1, 1918, to Bert Lee and Stella Secil (Andrew) Mash. She attended school at Holdenville and Shawnee and was Baptist. She married Jimmy P. Ray on May 22, 1937, in Shawnee and they became parents of twins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Lee Roy, Melvin Eugene and Edgar Paul Mash.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy P. Ray, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Wayne and Vivian Ray, Shawnee; daughter and son-in-law, Linda Jane and Hugh Crume, Cedar Valley, Texas; sisters, Betty Jo Baker and Pauline Hembree, both of Shawnee; grandchildren, Felicia Ann Spurlock, Texas City, Texas; Tina Wellman, Shawnee, and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Cemetery, Shawnee, with the Rev. John Mixon officiating. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Murray Funeral Home in Durant.

James Robert Hembree

James Robert Hembree of Iowa Park, Texas, brother of Debi Kelly of Shawnee, died Tuesday in Altus. He was 50.

He was born Dec. 16, 1947, in Chandler. He married Deborah Ann Bunney in Shawnee on Aug. 4, 1968. He had served in the U.S. Army and was a Christian. He worked for Pollock Paper Distributors for 18 years as a sales representative and was retired. He had lived in Blair, Okla., and Wichita Falls, Texas, before moving to Iowa Park.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Hembree, Iowa Park, Texas; mother, Juanita Hembree, Sparks; daughters, Kristi Banks, Wichita Falls, Texas; Traci Wright, Iowa Park, Texas; son, James R. Hembree II, Iowa Park, Texas; sister, Debi Kelly, Shawnee, and one stepgranddaughter.

His father, James Lewis Hembree, preceded him in death.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Dutton Funeral Home Chapel in Iowa Park, Texas, with the Rev. Billy Williams officiating. Private burial will be at Highland Cemetery.

Tommy Darrell Royal

Shawnee resident Tommy Darrell Royal died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 51.

He was born Feb. 22, 1947, in Hollis, the son of Ray and Pearl Royal. He grew up in Hollis and graduated from Hollis High School in 1965. He married Billie Joy Ford on Aug. 16, 1968.

Royal graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 and received a master of business administration from Oklahoma City University in 1985. He was a registered professional engineer.

He had worked for the Texas Water Quality Board in Austin and later for Pride Refining in Abilene, Texas. He and his family moved to Shawnee in 1979. He worked for Grace Petroleum and then for Parker & Parsley Oil Co.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a member of the intercessory prayer ministry. He was chaplain of the Shawnee Chapter of Gideon International and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Royal had been a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME since 1981 and a member of the Society of Professional Engineers since 1983.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Joy Royal, and daughter, Katie Royal, of the home; his son, Brett Royal, Wichita Falls, Texas; father and his spouse, Ray and Virginia Royal, Hollis; father-in-law and mother-in-law, W.H. "Bill" and Marge Ford, Shawnee; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Ron Bridges, Harrah; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gay and Roger Painter, DeSoto, Texas; Shelee and Don Stewart, Edmond; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Susan Ford, Prosper, Texas, and many other relatives.

His mother, Pearl, preceded him in death.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sam Hendry. Burial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Fairmont Cemetery in Hollis. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Shawnee Gideon Chapter.

Letha Elisabeth Maize

Longtime Shawnee resident Letha Elisabeth Maize died Monday in a local nursing home. She was 94.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Walter officiating. Burial will be in Little Cemetery. The family will have visitation at the chapel from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

She was born Oct. 31, 1903, in Love County to John and Callie (Sorrels) Marley. She married Henry Wright Maize Aug. 12, 1923, in Shawnee and was a homemaker. They lived in several towns in Oklahoma and moved back to Shawnee in May 1937.

Mrs. Maize was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Shawnee, where she taught children's Sunday school classes, substituted in other classes and taught in vacation Bible schools for many years.

Surviving are her daughters and a son-in-law, Cordelia (Maize) Lakin, Shawnee; Elisabeth (Maize) Little, Fremont, Calif.; Mary Ellen (Maize) and Edward Nunes, Fremont, Calif.; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1975; her parents; four brothers, Henry, Jerry, Paul and Bill Marley, and two sons-in-law, Edward "Eddie" Lakin and Elmer "Bill" Little.

Thelma Marie Brock

Thelma Marie Brock of Shawnee died Thursday in a local hospital. She was 82.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Arlington Memory Gardens, Midwest City, with the Rev. Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

She was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Moscow, Tenn., to Walter and Frances Kennon and grew up and attended school in Shawnee. She married Leon F. Brock in Lexington, Okla.

She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and had lived in Shawnee since 1919.

She is survived by her sister, Martha E. Rowe, Shawnee, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1971, her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

James Otto Childress

Former Shawnee area resident James Otto Childress died Tuesday in a Chico, Calif., hospital at the age of 74.

He was born July 17, 1923, in Dudly, Ky., to David and Bertha Childress. He was raised in the Shawnee area and married Louise Boring on May 14, 1946, in Shawnee.

He moved in 1954 to California and 35 years ago moved to Gridley, where he owned a radiator shop. He moved to Chico last year.

Survivors include his sisters, Estell Ashcraft, Shawnee; Elsie Ashcraft, Chandler; Irene Boring, San Diego, Calif., and a brother, Walter R. Childress, Shawnee.

Private burial will take place under the direction of Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home, Chico, Calif. Memorials may be made to Enloe Hospital or Twin Oaks Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in care of the funeral home.
