A.B. Harjo

Lander, Wyo., resident A.B. Harjo died Tuesday at Fort Collins, Colo. He was 79.

He was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Maud to Ida B. and Tima Harjo.

He was in the Air Force during World War II and worked at Tinker Air Force Base.

Harjo was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters and one brother.

Survivors include his daughters, Trena Kathaleen Watkins, Lander, Wyo., and Charlene Irani, Aurora, Colo.; sons, Matthew Harjo, Fayetteville, Ark., and Carl Harjo, Talequah; brothers, Floyd Harjo, Wewoka, and John Crayton Harjo, Hemet, Calif.; sisters, Antonette Larney, Wolf, and Flora Woods, Ada; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Pickard Funeral Chapel, Konawa, with the Rev. Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Harjo Family Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Chapel, Konawa.

Betty J. Edwards

Tecumseh resident Betty J. Edwards died Tuesday in Shawnee. She was 79.

She was born June 24, 1920, in Loco to Tracy and Edna Baird.

She married Otis Edwards April 7, 1942, in Chickasha.

Mrs. Edwards graduated from Ninnekah High School and spent one year at the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha. She grew up in Ninnekah. Following her marriage, she lived in Borger, Texas, and Chickasha before moving to Tecumseh in 1964.

While living in Chickasha, she worked for Chickasha Federal Savings and Loan, Stevenson Brown Lumber Co. and Malaby's Ben Franklin. She worked at Kib Warren's and S&H Green Stamps in Shawnee. She retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1982 after 16 years of service.

She was a member of AARP.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Tracy Baird Jr., Bill Baird, Edgar Baird and Dave Baird; and one sister, Flora Boswell.

Survivors include her husband, Otis Edwards, of the home; sons and daughter-in-law, Otis Edwards Jr., Harrah, Bob and Linda Edwards, Tecumseh; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Reba King, Panhandle, Texas, and Lillian Auttonberry, Homer, La.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Rep. Dale Smith officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery.

Opal Arleatha (Roberts) Stough

Former area resident Opal Arleatha (Roberts) Stough of Austin, Texas, died Sunday in Georgetown, Texas. She was 92.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Cooper Funeral Chapel, Tecumseh, with Jim Chandler officiating. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Opal Arleatha Roberts was born Sept. 24, 1905, at Tecumseh, the daughter of Willam Asberry Roberts and Arabella Paris (Hamman) Roberts.

She was reared in Shawnee and was a 1924 graduate of Bethel High School. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University and graduated from East Central University. She taught school in Oklahoma for 25 years in St. Louis, Dale and Midwest City.

She married Roy G. Stough on Dec. 23, 1953, in Gainesville, Texas, and moved to Burbank, Calif., in 1954. She moved to Arlington, Texas, in 1974.

She was a Gold Star Mother, member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter 491 of Midwest City, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Eugene Loyd Farthing Post 7192 of Midwest City, Women's Club of Burbank, Women's Club of Arlington, and the United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Ruby Gentry, Thelma Cooper, and one son, Eugene Farthing.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Bob Hunderup, Georgetown, Texas; grandchildren and their spouses, Tia and Don Hanvey, Dallas, Texas; Cy and Cheryl Walker, Fairfax Station, Va.; Todd Hunderup, Round Rock, Texas; six great-grandchildren; sister, Ora Chancellor, Shawnee; brothers and sisters-in-law, Willard and Wanda Roberts, Shawnee; John and Marcella Roberts, Wichita, Kan., and brother-in-law, Roy Gentry, Shawnee.

Thomas Harold Engel

Longtime Meeker businessman Thomas Harold Engel died Sunday at his home. He was 67.

Bible vigil will be 7 p.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Meeker. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Adrian Vorderlandwehr, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will at New Hope Cemetery, Meeker, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Viewing will be at Roesch-Walker Chapel until 5 p.m. today and before vigil service. The casket will not be opened for services Wednesday.

Thomas Harold Engel was born March 18, 1931, in Meeker to Oscar J. and Anna (Lee) Engel. He grew up on the family farm on Quapaw Creek east and north of Meeker, attended Crescent School and graduated from Meeker High School, where he played baseball and basketball, in 1949.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Toledo off the Korean coast during the Korean War. He married Treva Marie Northcutt on Aug. 8, 1958, in Gainesville, Texas.

Engel worked for Oklahoma Natural Gas Company, did aircraft work in California, did crude oil production work for several companies in Oklahoma and Texas, was a truck driver for J.B. Hunt, owned rental property and was a cafe owner and operator.

He served as Meeker vice mayor, chairman of Meeker Heritage Days, president of Meeker Senior Citizens and song leader of the Heart to Heart Singers.

He also was chairman of the parish council, lector, eucharist minister and chairman of the evangelistic committee at St. Michael's Church and secretary of the Knights of Columbus Council 9583.

Surviving are his wife, Treva Marie Engel, of the home; son, Leon Longacre, Sapulpa; daughters, Anita Chapman, Wewoka; Sharon Hook, Tacoma, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, including Mark Daniels of Tulsa; three brothers, Oscar J. Engel, Pampa, Texas; Martin F. Engel, Lawndale, Calif.; Ambrose W. Engel, Meeker; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Neil and Doretha Northcutt, Davis; mother-in-law, Marie Northcutt, Meeker; sister-in-law, Mercedes Engel, Fulton, Ky., and many other relatives.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Edward Lee Engel, William Doyle Engel, James Elden Engel, and nephew, Robert A. Engel.

William Lee Jobson Jr.

Lt. Col. William Lee Jobson Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C., died Monday at his home.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War. He was a retired chaplain and served with the 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, JFK Center of Special Warfare, United States Army in Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Jobson, of the home; son, William V. Jobson, Shawnee; daughter, Malinda Frangione, Yukon, and five grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at JFK Chapel, Fayetteville, N.C., with chaplain Col. Aiken officiating. Burial will full military honors will be at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care Hospice, 516 Owen Dr., Fayetteville NC 28301.

Mildred Rose West

Longtime Shawnee resident Mildred Rose West died Saturday in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 78.

She was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Shawnee to Charles Hill and Rosa McCowan. She attended Shawnee High School and had lived in Shawnee most of her life.

She married David West in Shawnee on June 20, 1964. She worked as a waitress at the Town Talk Cafe and Mazzio's Pizza. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Everett Eugene and Ann Miller, Shawnee; daughter and son-in-law, Delora Sue and Stephen Lower; grandchildren, Robert E. Paz, Deborah A. Paz, Anita Patrice Miller, Joseph B. Paz, David H. Miller, and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, David West, and grandson, Troy Lee Webb.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bill Matthews and the Rev. Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Bena Mae Langston

Asher resident Bena Mae Langston died Sunday at the age of 89.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home in Konawa with the Rev. Richard Winters officiating.

Mrs. Langston was born Jan. 18, 1909, in Missouri to Myrtle and Clarence Stanford. She married Kenneth M. Langston on May 14, 1927. She was employed as a cashier and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include three sons, James K. Langston, Bill R. Langston, both of Asher; Richard Langston of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter, Margaret Gurley of Seminole, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth M. Langston, on Feb. 18, 1989.

Lela Elizabeth Wood Taylor

Weleetka resident Lela Elizabeth Wood Taylor died Saturday in Weleetka at the age of 95.

Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church in Dustin with the Rev. Gary McKeen officiating. Burial was at Dustin Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Okemah.

Mrs. Taylor was born Jan. 16, 1903, in Castle, Indian Territory, to James Oliver and Sarah Frances Rains Wood. She married Hugh Taylor on June 14, 1919, in Okemah.

She moved to Dustin in 1925 and lived there until she moved to Weleetka in 1993. She was a homemaker and member of the Dustin First Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, H.B. Taylor of Checotah, Walter "Tip" Scott of Caliente, Calif., James Taylor of Oolagah, Harlan Taylor of Francis, Benny Taylor of Moss; one daughter, Ruby Eldridge of Henryetta; one half sister, Iona Reed of Amarillo, Texas; 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Taylor, on March 19, 1966; two daughters, Billy Jean Wiley and Eula Harmon, and three infants.
