Carl J. Lynch

Prague resident Carl Joseph Lynch died Friday in Oklahoma City. He was 81.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God Church, Prague, with the Rev. Herman Searcy officiating. Burial will follow in the Kellerby Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Prague.

Lynch was born on March 29, 1917, in Wellston to Joe and Zelphia (Haymaker) Lynch. He married Hallie May Young in Chandler on March 9, 1940.

Lynch was a veteran of World War II and was a retired truck driver. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Prague.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Howard and JoAnn Lynch, Shawnee; brothers, James Lynch, Stockton, Calif.; Leroy Lynch, Shawnee; sisters, Pearl Young, Dorothy Hall, Edna Collins, and Daphine Joy, all of Shawnee; Lavella Behrnes, Grass Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife on April 27, 1995; one son, Larry Lynch; his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Maurine Jordan

Former Shawnee resident Maurine (Baird) Jordan, 83, of San Antonio, Texas, died Friday, Sept. 4, at her home.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Memorial Park with the Rev. R. Scott Baird officiating.

She was born July 26, 1915, on a rural route in Payson, Okla., near Meeker, to Horace and Clara (Hale) Baird. She attended Thompson Grade School and was a 1933 graduate of Meeker High School. She was valedictorian of her class. She attended Central State College, which is now the University of Central Oklahoma.

Jordan taught school for more than 35 years. Her first teaching job was at Valley View, west of Meeker. She also taught in Meeker and in Midland, Texas, where she was named Teacher of the Year.

On Aug. 7, 1943, she married E.A. "Buck" Jordan in Meeker.

She was a longtime member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

Survivors include her husband of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Lynn Stewart of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter, Amy Stewart of San Antonio; brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Scott and Mona Baird of Edmond; and a sister, Charlotte Hampton of Yukon, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be made to the Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, 519 W. Houston St., San Antonio, Texas, 78207.

Homer Harjo

Homer Harjo of Shawnee died Saturday at his residence. He was 69.

He was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Bowlegs, Okla., to Felix Harjo and Lucinda Harjoche. He graduated from Shawnee High School and worked and retired from Tinker Air Force Base after 33 years of service.

He married Reta Wilson in 1967. He also served in the Korean Conflict while serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the First Indian Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, John Henry Harjo, and a son, Mark Lynn Harjo.

Surviving are his wife, Reta Harjo of the home; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles Harjo of Shawnee, Eric Harjo of Shawnee, Terry Harjo of Oklahoma City, David and Tracy Harjo of Shawnee and Larry and Nia Harjo of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Roy Hale of Oklahoma City and Cheryl and Frank Carter of Shawnee; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and his mother, Lucinda Johnson of the home.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at the First Indian Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Snakecreek Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Mary E. Houk

Mary E. Houk of Shawnee died Sunday at the age of 60.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Clay and the Rev. Mike Craig officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Cooper Funeral Chapel of Tecumseh.

She was born Aug. 16, 1938, in Banner, Okla., the daughter of Frank and Norma (Clay) Chesser. She was reared at Bearden, south of Okemah, and moved to Visalia, Calif., in 1954.

In 1955, she married Von E. Houk in Oklahoma City. They lived in Wewoka before moving to Alvin, Texas, and then, in 1965, to Shawnee. She was a homemaker and had worked with her husband at Ford Tractor Co. in Shawnee for 10 years. She also worked at Mobil Chemical for 20 years and retired in 1998.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Gregory Low, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Homer and Selma Houk.

Surviving are her husband, Von E. Houk of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Sue and Michael Cline, Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Alan V. and Brenda Houk, Bethel Acres; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith and Dan Hampton, Barstow, Calif.; Lynn and Roger Bridges and Brenda and Freeman Curtis, all of Visalia, Calif.; Don Houk, Okemah; brothers and sisters-in-law, Austin and Joy Chesser, Meeker, Paul and Iva Nell Chesser, Lompoc, Calif., Hugh and Phyllis Chesser, Oxnard, Calif., and David and Judy Chesser and Frank and Jean Chesser, all of Visalia, Calif.; five grandchildren, Shannon Low and Cory Low, both of Shawnee, Shelby Houk, Bethel Acres, and Amber Cline and Kayla Cline, both of Macomb; and many other relatives.

Vida Watts

Vida Watts, 72, died Sunday at her home in Welty, Okla.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel, Okemah, with the Rev. Robert Rich officiating.

She was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Pope County, Ark., the daughter of Roy and Lucy Smith Bunton. She married Pete Watts in Welty on Feb. 8, 1942. She was a homemaker and had lived in the Welty area since 1941.

Preceding her in death were her parents; infant twins; son, Lyndol Ray Watts; daughter, Gloria June Watts; brother, Bobby Ray Bunton; sister, Iona Greenrock; great-grandson, Troy Don VanZant, and son-in-law, Troy Winkle.

Surviving are her husband, Pete Watts, Welty; three sons, Steve Watts, Bristow; Randy Watts and Shawn Watts, both of Welty; daughter, Louise Winkle, Okmulgee; brother, Raymond Bunton, Texas; three sisters, Edna Poe, Arkansas, Alice Brown, Eufaula, and Reba Zojac, Arizona; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She will be buried at Welty Cemetery under the director of Parks Brother Funeral Home, Okemah.

Zane Grey

Zane Grey died Sunday in Seminole. He was 75.

He was born July 22, 1924, in Wewoka, Okla., to Eli and Essie (Wright) Grey. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired truck driver and a resident of Prague. He also was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Zane and Shirley Owens were married on Sept. 17, 1955.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Grey of the home; four sons, Jack Grey of Lebanon, Mo., Larry Grey of Atlanta, Ga., Ricky Grey of Prague, and Michael Grey of Prague; one daughter, Sabrina Grey of Prague; and one grandson, David Grey of Lebanon, Mo.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Gable Cemetery, with the Rev. Randall Miller officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.

Montie Dillon

Montie Dillon died Saturday in Seminole. He was 79.

He was born Nov. 17, 1919, the son of Richard and Sally (Wilson) Dillon. He was a resident of Seminole for the past five years and previously lived in Stroud most of his life. He retired from Blue Bell in Seminole. He was a member of the Church of God in Stroud and a member of the Moose Lodge in Arizona.

He married Bernice Langwell in Wewoka on June 28, 1940.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, two brothers, a half-brother and a half sister.

Surviving are three sisters, Olga Baehr of Mojave, Calif., Mary Halstead of Hominy, Okla., and Leota Garant of Sacramento, Calif.; three half-brothers, Edward Dillon of Oklahoma City, Richard Dillon of Missouri and George Dillon of Seminole; two half sisters, Nancy Sealy of Seminole and Jessie Villalobas.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today at Stroud Cemetery with the Rev. Quint Miller officiating. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

George Miller Hankins

George Miller Hankins of Shawnee died Saturday at a local nursing home. He was 82.

He was born March 20, 1917, in Shawnee to Keder and Ellen (Terry) Miller and was adopted by Ed and Allie Hankins. He attended Shawnee Schools.

He was a firefighter at Tinker Air Force Base, and he retired as an assistant chief in May 1972. He started his career working as a cab driver then working at Woolsworth for several years. He also worked for the Shawnee Fire Department before being hired at Tinker.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Hankins and his wife Ellen Elizabeth Timmons Hankins traveled all over the United States.

Preceding him in death were his wife in 1992, a grandson, Christopher Miller Hankins in 1996 and a sister Polly Stienart.

Surviving are his children, Jeannine and Floyd Hughes of Shawnee, David and Judy Hankins of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Mary Ellen and Bernard McEntee of Albuquerque, N.M; grandchildren, Kelli and Kari Hughes of Shawnee, Michael and Pat McEntee of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mark Hankins of Wimberly, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Brianna and Colin McEntee, Liam Michael McEntee and Ashley Hankins; brothers and sisters, John Boone Hankins of Oklahoma City, Houston Miller of Lubbock, Texas, Sam Currie of Douglas, Wyo., and Juanita Roeggles of Victoria, Texas.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Lt. Carlyle Gargis officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
